Being a VW type, I know nothing about Toyota Corollas, but watching my new Initial D VCD has aroused an interest (so to speak). So, the question is, can anybody take me through the various sorts or point me in the direction of a website that can? Also, which ones are RWD? (or "RWD Drift burnout wow rare" as our ebay friends would have it...)

Far too 'fashionable' and ridiculously overpriced. Your only hope of owning an AE86 Trueno or Levin is to find a little old lady owner who doesn't know what it is and will gladly accept £1000 from you for her ropey example. Odds - slim to none at all. Alternatively, find yourself any other small-ish toyota of pre-1983 vintage (Starlet / Corolla / Carina) and a MK1 Mr2 to plunder for it's 4AGE engine.... Cool cars none-the-less

Hmm, unfortunately you must be at least the 100,000th person to watch initial D and decide they fancy a rwd ‘drift’ corolla, with the predictable result that they now seem to regularly make 4-5k on the bay even for a very average example that just looks like some crummy brummie curry chariot. They are cool motors alright but have some sort of ‘iconic’ status with appropriately iconic prices.
Saying that RearwheelNick knows where there is one for 700 notes, but it looks like a bit of a pile.

The Irish drift championship was won last year by a Granda apparently..
The whole InitialD thing was because the hero can't afford a full on drift mobile so just uses (what was) a cheap alternative.... the trick would be to find the european equivilent.

A local geezer as a 40K mile from new Corolla I've been trying to buy for a while. Looks like this one: but stock and yellow.

Once you've done Initial D you need to get into watching the D1 Drift series - I've been downloading loads of this. The AE86 (Initial D car) and 200sxs rule! I reckon the best way to get a good AE86 is to ship one from Japan - no rust and all the mods done. There are soooo many. Go to www.carsensor.net and search for Trueno or Levin. The AE86 is now so cult that they are seriously expensive. I'm lusting after one and as I've sold £5k's worth of vinyl records in the last few weeks I have the money for one but I will resist. As alternatives you need a car with a strong shell with good power, an LSD rear end and a manual gearbox, and for something more affordable I reckon: Nissan 200sx S13 Nissan 200sx S14 BMW E30 325i Mazda RX7 (the late 80s version - there is one in Initial D in white) Mitsubishi Starion In fact the S13 200sx is a seriously dowdy car and well out of fashion but its a 170 horsepower perfect drift machine. Nobody wants them so they're cheap. Unfortunately they're very Barry. I reckon a 325i track day LSD equipped BMW is classy enough and fast enough. Probably quite heavy so you'd want to throw out all the sound proofing, back seats, stereo, heating, a/c, etc. Charlie

Charlie has some good suggestions, but as this is Retro Rides I'll second NickB's proposals for older Toyota stuff up to the early 80's when most of the range went FWD. Lots of interchangeability of parts, and older models of Corolla had twin-cam Levin versions in Japan.
What about that gorgeous green Corolla coupe that was on the 'bay a week or two back?
Or stick a rotary into that 626 coupe that someone posted yesterday?

Not exactly retro and not a Toyota either but if I wanted to go drifting I'd be looking for - Ex Polac Senator 24V or - Carlton GSi 24V .... RWD 200 bhp and slipper diffs and manuals aren't rare..... Well what did you expect from me If it had to be retro too then would have to be Monza GSE or Senator A series slightly less bhp 180 Slightly biased reply

waltons p100 was 24v cossie powered, hes got a v12 5series for next year so ive heard.
ae86 corolla's are ridiculously overpriced, importing is a good idea if you want bits already on it, but the bits that are already on are normally shagged and worn out, lovely little cars to drive ..if you can find a standard one for £700 to start with. chances like have been said are slim to none.
even the idea of dropping a 4age into a starlet isnt that great as starlets are now fetching a fair bit.
my advice like everyone elses get over it, and buy something thats better and cheaper

I know the AE86 ones are scary in the price department I'm not seriously thinking of buying one (I really shouldn't buy any more cars ) I was just interested. That Sierra/P100 is fugly-cool!

my advice like everyone elses get over it, and buy something thats better and cheaper and different too - do your own thing rather than following the herd! How about a Volvo 740 Turbo? There have been some great drift vids of Volvos in Sweden posted on here, but are there any currently on the UK scene? The cars are still cheap & plentiful, and above all tough. A cheap one will probably still have decent cosmetics (a friend paid £300 for aC plate 760 with 80K (so barely run-in) in 2001 & the body / paint was perfect except for a few minor dings - not a speck of rust!

funnily enough i'm looking to buy a 240 estate dunno how i'll get any power out of it just yet. but i keep thinking about them and must get one, and a guy i know is going for a 740 for a drift mobile. probably a better idea seeing as you can get the turbo power straight away.

E30s arnt that heavy, it was only E36 onwards when they got really fat. My E30 325i motor sport is something like 1115kg...sure if your currently driving an MG midget or something that sounds heavy but itd be similar to an S13 200SX and only about 100kg more than an AE86.
Its very rare to see BMW drift cars, the E30 isnt so controllable on the limit as alot of other cars. You can correct that if you put M3 suspension in them but I'm not sure what the avability and cost of doing that is
