This afternoon I went up to the yard to some work on the Rambler, coming back I was doing 70 on a dual carrigeway, when I slowed down at a roundabout it started to misfire and chuck steam out of the exhaust. I managed to limp a bit nearer to home and pull into a quiet side street, the temp gauge was up in the red... I topped the water up and started it up again, there were clouds, and I mean clouds of steam from the exhaust, so I left it where it was and walked home.. just been back to it, filled up the water again and limped home, like a special effects fog machine... ;D ...looks like the head gasket has cashed its chips in , big style... looks like I'll be sticking it on ebay tommorow, unless of course anyone wants to make me an offer...

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

cmon man don't be a pussy a headgasket is a fifteen minute job! airbox off, rocker cover off, undo all the bolts in the right order, lift out the rods and lift off the head... change gasket, and reverse procedure! even i can do it, and i'm really utterly useless. i learnt how engines worked by stripping and rebuilding skoda engines its a doddle man!

Given the fav engine is the same as the Rapid/Estelle engine when you have the head and the gasket off you want to check that liners are all at the right height as they can drop which often is the cause of the blowing head. if this is the case and you just put another head gasget on it'll only blow again in a few thousand miles...much better idea to do it right in the first place. but yeah man, don't give up...!

If you topped up with cold water straight after that happening I reckon you will also have now cracked the head

Under other circumstances, and had it been in better condition overall, I would probably have repaired it... but I'd pretty much made up my mind it was going anyway. I would only have got maybe £100 for it before it happened... if I cash the tax in and stick it on the 'bay I should get £50-60 all told...

UPDATE!! I took the plugs outs this morning... water poured out of No. 3... cranked it over and squirted water/antifreeze all over the garage doors... The oil was looking decidedly suspect as well. While I was outside a scrap man came to look at a Fiesta that's been sat outside next doors for a month or two, so when he came back to collect it this afternoon I asked him what he'd give me... so I'm now £20 better off, and minus 1 skud... R.I.P...

I'm supprised they actually give money for scrap cars! Where I live the local Council CHARGE to take a vehcile away! Wandsworth Council (in London) will remove them for free - however, you have to give them V5, which means that the system can't be abused by asking them to remove a neighbour's car! I guess it's cheaper this way than for them to deal with the same vehicle when its abandoned.

I think our local council charge £25.... although they do have 'amnesty weeks' when you can do it for nowt. We have local scrap dealer come round weekly to collect the old boilers & other scrap from my father in laws business so krusher material just goes on his truck

in newport, you just have to drive it into the quarry, set fire to it and 2 - 3 weeks later a big lorry turns up and hauls 'em all away. then they come again. It's amazing how many and how quickly they'd come.

It's amazing how many and how quickly they'd come. In Swansea they just drive it in to the woods near the train line and set light to it,.. if they are lucky they can get a tree as well... then tourists can admire their handywork as they arrive in the city by train....
