Dear people,
We've avoided sperating pictures/interest threads from Tech threads in the past, because what RR is about is that meeting of tech and inspiration. However the volume of posts on here now means stuff is possibly getting lost or crowding things out the main board.
I've been re-arranging the forum over the past month and there are a bunch more things I'd like to do, however this is one of the biggest changes so I thought it would seeing what your viewpoint was. This is of course a sham election no matter what your views I'll ultimately still close 6music ultimately still make a decision one way or the other, I'm curious to see what prevailing thought is and might be swayed if feeling is strong.
and no .. you aren't getting an off topic section.
Your benevolant dictator, HTW

As much as it makes sense to split things up, I like the current system where someone asking a tech question can spawn discussions and <business lingo> Outside the box thinking</business lingo> which makes this place pretty valuable for getting really good answer for a question (or just spawning a lot more questions. good to read though)
and if you must close 6 music, put Adam and Joe on another station and I won't firebomb anyone mind too much,

Great idea, HW. How to build a water tank, or where can I get a mirror like this, or who can teach me pinstriping, are all VERY worthy topics, but the main board loses valuable essays and pictorial threads almost immediately because of how-to, or where-buy, or ebay-screwed-me, or how much to mail questions. Doeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet, pull the trigger! 1 plus vote in your sham election.

i was thinking the other day its quite bizarre this place doesnt have a seperate tech section. its the only forum i can think of that doesnt, but i suppose the whole place is a lot more techy than most other forums, so its kinda all tech in a way. but yeah,

Yes a good idea but can it be done so as not too make the front page any bigger it slow enough to load as it is.
Oh and shouldn't this thread be in the website related section?

I think the idea to separate is good. But, at the same time, there's so much that is blurred between tech and general cool stuff, that I don't think it would really work that well. There wouldn't be that progression from tech question to examples of interesting stuff relating to the original question. My personal opinion is that it should carry on as is, continuing to weed out the non retro tech stuff that isn't suited to this forum. And 6 Music is the only station I listen to

It's a big N.O. from me - I really like the way 'how does this work' type threads merge into 'here are some cool examples' HC.

If you guys think this place moves fast and is crowdy, go visit the hamb, which also uses one single main... err... whateveritscalled. "section"
I kinda like how it is now, i think a tech section would make it all too... techy, on the other hand you don't have to be too strict with the almost-offtopic rules there either.
A "tech" section may also intimidate people not to post pictures, or answer threads if they don't think they're qualified, which makes everything strict and uncomfortable. It may also spawn more "funny car pics" threads in the main-section.

A big Y.E.S. from me - even if in reality it might ramble off into a 'semi-tech' section as people start yappin' about something unrelated to the topic at hand. Viva El presidente Hotwire!

I vote no. I like the all-in-one style we have now. Ok, some really good posts get pushed down the board by the mediocre stuff, but it doesn`t take long to read through all the days new posts on one forum, allowing me to see everything and choose what threads I look further into. However, if the board was split I would be less likely to fully read both forums, so may miss more stuff. - Yes this would be me being lazy, but thats the way I am! Already, I have kindof blanked out the Garage Scene forum as I keep forgetting its there. Plus, I believe it would be a rather blurry line between some real tech advice questions and general chat about something that gets a bit technical.

I like it the way it is now but understand the concerns about the board moving so rapidly so the new section may be the way forward. I will be fine as long as the tech section is visited regularly. One of the great things about this board is how much quality information often gets received as replies to tech questions, but if everyone is hanging out in the main section and technical questions are receiving one or two replies from a couple of people then we're going to have lost something valuable from the board I think.

Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about this. Whilst it's sometimes frustrating to have your obscure tech question sink to the bottom unanswered, I think having a separate section will only be visited by those who consciously go in there to answer / ask questions.
I can see some of your reasons for wanting to do it, but I think the "one-stop" board idea that has been the way since RR started has worked really well. OK so we have about 300 times more members since I joined but I still think it works well.
Maybe once the Wiki is fully populated and running it'll be a go-to resource for tech problems and a lot of the repeated questions will disappear?

I like the idea of a tech section.
I don't like the idea of the BBC closing the only decent radio station they have.

I vote no; I like the mix of stuff as it is. I like the way it can prompt other discussions, I like pretty pictures being posted by way of thanks and I like people saying "I have no idea but here's a picture of an awesome....". Because I'm quite simple and I like pretty pictures and bright colours. And I don't see why they can't just pay Chris sodding Moyles a bit less money, trim all of the curse word from BBC3 (i.e. the programs...) and spend that on 6 Music.
I agree with Dave3.14159, I keep forgetting that the garage scene bit exists. I think if you divide it up more then some good threads will get less coverage. I mean, the way it is now, even if you don't consider yourself very technically minded, a question might pop up that you know the answer to because you remember watching your dad do it when you were a kid or similar. Or even, someone could put up a wild answer in a moment of inspiration that the techy guys might not think of.

I think it would be good. Just to help threads on the general forum last if anything - they quickly get swallowed up by unrelatedness. I'm sure there are many people with a lot of technical knowledge on here that is being wasted and could help others who don't want to post technical questions in the general forum

1386 pages on this section. We need hella more segmentation. I don't have time to wade through reams of 'is this retro or not?' twaddle to get to the good stuff.

People are saying they want to read the tech questions, and that a separate section may make the threads less visible.
