Ciao Retroisti... Yes, yes I know that I a while back said: Please Audi make me the New Miura but after looking at it over & over again, pondering and just the other day going over what's new at the Detroit Auto Show I have a feeling that all this New this & that have to stop!!!! All these New Beetle, Mini, Miura, Mustang, GT40, Challenger, Camaro, Chevy SSR, etc. will never go down in history like the Original has done, we are right now beeing flooded with these things and I have about had it!!!! When will Saab show the New Sonett the way the company is doing and with GM trying to sell it off I hope we'll never see a concept like it. When will Volvo stuff the New P1800, down our throat??? Well the car shown at Detroit has some hints of the 1800 ES but.... I just have to say, buuuuhhhh please noooo to all these..... Please give me the Real Stuff..... DP asks: Is it OK to have a 100% change of opinion on this board? ?

hotwire in da house: If they make this as a Panel van,.. I will buy one
If they make it as a "sedan delivery" or "panel van" (as yous say) I'm not 100% sure about but the base car is the Chevy HHR the next version of (the sales dissaster) SSR that are based on the 46 Chevy Suburban & PickUp, I think it's god awefull, not even Co Cal Speed Shops Bonneville salt shaker could live up to it's 46 relatives looks.....
Just open up your wallet and you'll be able to roll down the road in a HHR "Delivery", GM will do what ever to keep floating these days.....

What are GM up to these days? Renaming Daewoo 'chevrolet' and putting Saab badges on gayed-up yank tank SUV's? They really seem to be clutching at straws. They'll need to bring out a 'new' VX 4/90 FE if they want to get my attention anyway.

when will it stop? when people stop buying them!! Everywhere is 'retro' crazy at the moment and there is clearly a demand for retro styled cars but with modern day luxuries and performance. Sure, its not what i'd want but id rather see chaps driving them than the usual boring repmobiles. personally, i think its a nice nod to the history of these manufacturers and i don't really have a problem with it. Some of them are real nice.
it could all go wrong when they bring out the 'new' Mondeo though! ;D

keefy in da house: when will it stop? when people stop buying them!!
They have already!!! The New Beetle was a sales dissaster from day 1, most of the cars shiped to Canada was unsold after 2 years, a big rental car co in Sweden bought them for peanuts. There are 1000's of Chevy SSR is sitting in a big lot in Texas unsold. The New Mustang has not sold as expected, the Mini is almost unsellable here in Sweden and I guess that 90% of them on the roads here are either rentals or advertizing space you can lease for almost nothing.....
So by reading the industry press it's obvious that these New versions of Retro is not the volume cars the makers expected, sure there are some nutters out there that will by them but they will never outsell the Mondeo and really not in volumes that are interesting....
tommyg in da house: i blame the PT Cruiser
Here in Sweden the PT hype was huge untill the release day, sales never materialized and MB/Chrysler had to sell of a bunch to Taxi Stockholm, biggest Taxi Co in Sweden and after that NO one want to bee seen in one....
DP says: As a former New Beetle owner I'll rather by the Golf it's based on.....

hotwire in da house: This is forward thinking car designWell is it? VW-Porsche 914, Lotus Elise, Opel Speedster....... Sure if it had been a hybrid, gas power, echo power, diesel or somthing more environment frendly I would buy it but mid-engine cars is nothing new in my book... Edit: Sorry it's a diesel so that's 1 point in the right direction.... DP says: Don't want to sound like Chicken Little, but......

We are simply in a retro revival period.
Just look at how many TV ad's are shot as if through a 70's cinecamera.
Even the cutting edge I-Pod is 60's chic in it's design.
New movies are old movies, new cars are old cars.
But that's no reason to say their replacements will fail.

but mid-engine cars is nothing new in my book... Where the hell else do you want them to put the engine? On the roof maybe?? The fact that they are building a sporty car that does 85mpg and 148mph is great in my book. And I like the styling.

General agreement. as much as i like the Challenger, std MINI and GT40, oh that camaro too, Its just lazy to remake a 'classic' like remaking a good film like italian job etc. Never meet your heros they say, well never remake your heroes. I'd admit if i was in the market for a new car the MINI would be on the list for a few reasons. But yeah i think it has to stop really its gettin boring and predictable, and putting the designs in the wrong hands, we can have differnt old classics cos we can be bothered to fix em maintain em and learn about, aswell as drive the old fuggers(c) on the roads! Please take styling cues and sexy lines and give us summat new. were in the 'future' now aren't we?! Rev9 stylee freestyle rant ;D

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

what i don't get is why they're doing it... all the cars listed above, without exception are not even to the same status, let alone better... they taking iconic cars, and making them really boring! way to curse word on history guy, nice one. What really pisses me off, is they keep doing it, do they really think they're doing summit good?
If you could have the new or the original, anyone with an once of scene would go for the historic leg end, not a cheap tacky "wanna-be" re-make.

Its a bit worrying when all new cars look (or try to look) like ones from 20 or 30 years ago. Shows a lack of imagination....A few companies like Renault/Nissan and Alfa do at least have that forward visionary thinking.
Its a lot to do with the marketing people, and this endless obsession with modernising motoring icons.
But I will say its a pretty exciting time for car design, compared to the late eighties/early nineties anyway. Lots to look forward to!
