I don't see what it can have in common with the 60s Chryslers. Unless they mean Hillman LOL. AFAIK the PT is FWD 4 cyl transverse engine with coil sprung IFS & IRS.
Yank Chryslers of the 60s are all longitudinal engine RWD, torsion bar front, leaf rear and live axle.

ed in da house: thats my aim when i get one.
What ever you do, DON'T!!!
I picked up one of those (same yellow) brand new from VAG Stockholm, from day 1 I had vibrations in the front right side, a leaking front window and rear hatch, swimming pool in the back on a rainy day, they changed all rubber around hatch (did not stop leaking) and front windshield (stopped leaking), balanced wheels (did not stop vibrating) after having it in the shop 4 times in 3 months I threathened with lawyers, they brought the car in and shiped it to the main office where it sat for 3 weeks and I got a Passat loaner, they did not have a Bug loaner (wonder why), they "fixed" it!!! Great I go to pick it up and on the way home the right front wheel came off and the car slammed into a concrete barrier at 70kph, the car was junk and myself I got a concusion and bruised by the seatbelts, left the car on the side of the road and rode home in a taxi, called VAG to pick it up and refund me the whole amount, strangely the monney was in my account 2 day later and an appology from the Swedish VP at VAG but no offer of a new Beetle. Turns out the front right brake caliper was bolted on with incorrect bolts and to top it off they had missed to tourque the wheel bolts after fixing the brakes and they had sheared right off...
Have heard from many unsatisfied Beetle owners since that, the story was in the local newspapers....

keefy in da house: you really need to get a website up with these tales on!!
Tales or Tales...
Had a website for a while then everyone and his brother started "bloggin" and I'm not really the person to open up my life to everyone and his brother, for me to start telling some of these stories I must feel somewhat comfortable with the surrondings, I don't want to be considered "that guy with those somewhat suspect stories" so those who have heard a bunch of these are people verry close to me since it can be embarrasing to pour your heart out....
The book thing has been in the back of my head for sometime and there's quite a buch of .doc on hard disks at home and I have quite a few friends in the Hot Rod & Bike biz from way back in the early days of "Swedish Choppers", owning night clubs in Stockholm through the years working in Cali with cars, bikes & restaurants and all of them think I should do it, we'll see but I really like putting these thing down on paper, I have written a diary almost daily since sometime 1975, I might be considered slightly nuts but it's a blast to sit down and read parts every now and then.....

I don't relly care A. they are never as good as the originals. they don't give you a retro car so you may aswell buy something normal. they are fake and who the hell wants somethign fake? not me expecialy when the real thing is so easy/cheap to get. B. the people who drive them are just trying to be cool and everone knows trying to be cool makes you uncool right?? so i like laughing at their stupidity! lets face it the only reason people buy these kind of cars is cous they want a 'poser moblie' the new bmw 3series i guess what i don't like is when the people who drive them talk to me as if there cars are in some way equal to mine! My mate is buying a fake MINI. God knows why, only reason i can come up with is he thinks he will get more sex with one :/ Going to cost him £13,000 at the age of 20! now i don't care what he wants to waste his life away on but what i do hate is when he talks about his fake MINI as if its the same car as my real mini! he honestly thinks its just as good! i should slap him i think! such an insult ramble ramble

My Sisterinlaw got a new MINI to replace her Metro (Rover 100 I think?) Its a decent car. Good residuals and the dealer seems to take care of her well. Turns out to have been a much better buy than a Rover 200 would have been... Mind you she buys all her groceries at M&S if you know what I mean.
I don't "get" new cars. OK, I get some new cars. CTS-V, Z06, Viper, Evos, RX8... But I hear two lads (20, early 20s?) and they are on about one of them has a new (used) Golf and its "wow, yeah, beast, beauty" and I'm thinking "what am I missing? its a flamin' Golf?" Its not a 4-motion or VR6 or anything even AFAIK. But then I'd struggle to tell one from a 1.4CL anyway. Or two lads comparing the "performance and handling" of a 106 1.0 Zest vs a Corsa 1.2 Merit - oh puuuhhhlease....
How many people I know seem to hock themselves up to the eyeballs on a 3 or 5 year old car when a 10 year old will be just as reliable and boring! I don't get it. I had a Saab 9000 from the auctions I paid £175 for it and ran it like a rental and it was reliable, comfy, well spec'd etc. never went wrong and I sold it for £375 after we'd been all over the country in it and hauled all manner of junk in it. It was clean, tidy, shiny paint. A mate spent £6K on a Vectra and its not as nice a car in a boring saloon kind of way as the Saab was and its not as reliable! So 3 years on and its ropey and worth £1500. But would he buy a £175 Saab? nope. Its not even "what would the neighbours think" with him, its just conditioned into people now....

The new MINI's are meant to handle well and I really wish I had got in to see the stunt show at the motorshow a few years back. one other thing i liked when i saw em was the flip front bonnet that takes the wings with it, should avoid crud collecting and old car haunt, rust. would consider one if i was in the market, although it is a different animal from the old micro machine, that we know the pro's and cons of, and i know which one i'd put a bike engine in! New cars i fail to get especially used ones which is a waste of money, my old sierra is best car i ever had with its reak low milage and low price. Although GF still wants a new smart, she needs something cheap to run and reliable for work. still not 100% if this is a good move, specially as she wants the posher pink on to be ironic! Edit: well sort of flips maybe its to stop me borrowing it!

A friend of mine who designs Aston Martins described the new Mini Cooper S Works as the most fun car he's driven in ages.

I think a BMW Mini is a sensible choice if you're after a new car, even if only for the low depreciation and easy resale. If they're fun to drive, even better! Personally I wouldn't get one, I'd rather have a late "old" Mini and then buy shares in the company that makes Waxoyl.
With all these "New - Old..." cars, the fashionable image would put me off getting one; Perhaps that makes me as bad as the people who get one because, as Slater says, they need to try to be "cool". Although I certainly don't need to try to be uncool, I'm already good at that.
Newer used cars can be great....my mrs drives 25k miles a year so last spring we got a 2002 Vectra DTi. Bland, and with handling best described as "a little detached", it does 52mpg, it's comfortable and reliable. It's just a matter of horses for courses IMHO - I'd hate to think of Mrs Sierra pounding the motorways in my car! Plus thanks to the hire purchase crowd rushing to buy the latest model, the Vectra cost us 25% of it's original list price, with FSH and 70k on the clock. "But it's the OLD shape...." - so f*****g what!
Back on topic - if I wanted a new car I'd go for something "proper new" - probably a Civic or Accord. Like Slater says, having a "fake" doesn't do it for me, and if you want new, you might as well get the latest design and technology.

I`ve got a real Mini, can`t stand the BMW Mini - never have, never will. But the wife used to have an old 1303 Beetle and has now got a new Beetle cabrio - and I don`t mind that so much, don`t know if it`s because it`s still made by VW (that is pretty much the only similarity) or because I`m odd

Although I certainly don't need to try to be uncool, I'm already good at that. This is an interesting point. I'd say there is more fashion in retro cars than there is in modern cars. Or at least Fashion has a higher effect and more saturation within the social group behind them.

Yeah, The fact that the new MINI holds its value is another good reason to get one. thinking about it minis have been passed around a bit, and now with the MINI done by BMW, its a mixed bag, it bound to be built better but isnt real cos its now made by a german company used to producing very opposite types of cars, mind you could say that about a lot of things, Boddingtons, the cream. (not of manchester anymore)! I think its been carefully designed and quite like it but then i never owned new or old, so ill keep it to that. think i have sold my self! o/t again, nearly new cars can be ok, was my dads trick, its when people get a loan or spend life savings to buy a banger to be in a few years off a dodgy forecourt, swings and round abouts. also someone i know is obsessed with having to have a new car and buys ugly hyundais!

Modern cars can be OK....
I love my Fabia vRS it's the BEST car I've EVER had.... it's quick (enough), reliable (touch wood) cheap to run, does 55-60mpg average, handles well (enough) comfy etc...etc....
I've driven my share of older cars, and am not averse to them, in fact I actively encourage my G/f to buy the cars I like, so I get to share the 'experience'... but for my daily slog to work and back, and the mundane shunting about, I doubt I'll go back to a more aged vehicle... the peace of mind of warranty and fixed price (paid upfront) servicing/maintenance and tyres is too good to turn down. I have to worry about very little when I'm blatting about... as it's nearly all covered...
Yeah, I may pay a bit for the 'privilege' but that's my perogative....
I bought the Skoda new, and I expect to lose a fair whack on it when I chop it in.... but it costs me less per month to buy and run than I was paying out on most of previous cars to keep them on the road....
