Hi guys,
I've recently started looking at Rover P6's and the earlier P5b's and I was wondering if anyone on here has had any experience with them?
I'm after a V8 one of course...
Anything to look out for?
Thanks in advance,
Matt

The Rover P6 is a 'Skeleton Frame' body design with all bolt on panels (front and rear wings) so beware that 'perfect looker' with even perfect panels hiding dark goings on behind!

On the P6, look especially carefully at the fornt bulkhead, as this takes all the loading from the front suspension. As TwincamGTi points out, the outer panels are very easy to swap, so check the structure behind very carefully & be very suspicious of signs of panel changing (marks around bolts etc)
On the P5, these rot nicely, especally front / rear wings, & also the rear arch structure (where the rear door opens).
A P6 V8 would be cheaper than a P5b - also the coupes are the most desirable & therefore also most expensive

I had a P6 V8. Lovely car. The most annoying problem I had was a seized rear brake caliper. As the rear discs are inboard, it's a swine to change, so check they work first! I had the pleasure of helping a mate restore one as well. Loads of patch repairs needed doing to the frame, but with the bolt on panels, this was easier than on other cars. The car is built very nicely, big bolts and seemingly only a few sizes. Space working around the engine is tight, but we removed his so we could rebuild it giving plenty of access in the process. Tough choice between the two cars though. P5Bs are tougher looking, although my mates was lowered on SD1 alloys and sported the police spec chin spoilers. Nice.

I know of an SD1 vitesse that'll probably be for sale soon.

Check there's no knocking coming from the top of the engine. The rocker posts or shafts or something goes on the early V8s.
Muppet GTI - have you got the movie of that A in your avatar? Me wanty badly if so.

As wagoneer said- Those rear calipers are a right chore to work on, and they seem to be a weak spot on the cars too. Look out also for the bonnet- they are often split in the middle on the sides........ i don't know why they crack there I prefer the series 1 (64' - 71') as they have a nice chrome grille and no chrome side trim
