It's been one of those "We're going to do that one day" things, enter a long distance trial. Over the years a myriad different cars have been discussed, approved or discarded, then done nothing about. This year however comes an idea which while it may never fly is interesting enough the explore even if only in print. The requirements are these: Quickish - i.e. not slow, but doesn't have to be crazy quick Light High ground clearance And I can't help noticing that MGFs are now crazy cheap for what they are. So here's the plan. Make a ba5tard son of these two models. ![](http://www.instructables.com/files/deriv/FFR/1V3U/FGF778MJ/FFR1V3UFGF778MJ.MEDIUM.jpg) ![](http://www.mgf.org/mgf.gif) The MG is quick and light, and while it doesn't have much ground clearance it's got hydragas suspension, something I know a bit about from my mis-spent youth in Allegro-land. In short: if you can make an Allegro or Metro with variable ride height then you should be able to do the same with an MGF. Add a sump guard and some suitably off-road capable wheels and tyres and hey presto! Baja-F! And for extra bonus points, it wouldn't half wind up the MG purists. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Now it can't be that easy. And let's face it, it probably ain't gonna happen. But what does the panel think?

Would be very cool and different, but I think the classic VW-based Baja car would be much more durable off-road. Who knows though, and I would very much like to see it done! 10/10 for thinking outside the square, now go do it!

I'm afraid my Photoshop skills are less-than-1337. What I'm imagining isn't strictly classic Baja bug. No different wheel sizes, after all it's intended for slightly extreme versions of muddy farm tracks rather than sand. So imagine Land Rover steelies in an MGF size - Do they exist? Metro/Rover 100 steel wheels? with LR-style knobblies. Home made hydro pump details: www.lame-delegation.de/mgfcar.de/pump/Back in the day ours used a brake master cylinder. Annoyingly the F is end-to-end plumbed isn't it? Not side-to-side like the first series Metros. So an early Metro "dial-a-stance" becomes "dial-a-lean" like it did on the Allegro.

you would have to do the big n' littles and some arch work, just off road wheels and a raising will look too half-hearted.

Nice idea, but for me convertable off roaders are a no-no. The two just don't go together for me, 2 completely different ideals.
Dotn nkow much about F's but thinking about it, you can get a hard top cant you?
If it was me i'd just be betting a baja beetle and building a decent motor for it.
Or, baja bug and a 'glass karmann ghia body?

However, I'm thinking of it more to create a sports car that can convert at the flick of a switch (or 200 strokes of a pump ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ) from road to offroad to do a bit of rough stuff on a trial than to create an MG homage to the Baja racers. However, a properly done full-on Baja rework on an MGF would look rather tasty.

Yes, there excluded ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Just to confuse the issue even more, i think roofless is ok on offroaders as long as there is a substantial cage to give it a 'roofline'.

I'm at work, so no chop. But If you imagine this with an mg bonnet, keep the arches, cage instead of roof.... I must be hallucinating, sorry. ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png) ![](http://douglassonders.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/_mg_2419.jpg)

Annoyingly the F is end-to-end plumbed isn't it? Not side-to-side like the first series Metros. So an early Metro "dial-a-stance" becomes "dial-a-lean" like it did on the Allegro. Is it possible to re-plumb? and another one for the convertable off-roader.... beach buggy!

If it's anything like a metro (Which I'm pretty sure it is) then you can individualise it, so you can pump each corner up as much or as little as you want. But it's not really a great way of changing ride heights.

Its a Trophy Kart - scaled down version of a Trophy Truck. Intended to be a starter series for kids but from what I've seen its usually the adults hogging the drivers seat.
