Is it still possible to have steels widened??? Thinking about what I want to do with the Volvo, I wouldn't mind having the original wheels taken out to about 7" instead of their current 5.5". Anybody suggest anywhere (in the N.E. if possible!!) Thanks.

This pops up now and then, to my knowledge if it's done by a professional then it's legal and still possible, and quite safe if it's done properly, although I don't know of any firms who would do it for you, sorry. If you find someone who'll do it then go for it I reckon, Volvos look good riding on wide Volvo steelies!

Banded wheels are illegal, regardless of who they're done by. That said, I doubt you'd get caught, unless they were wobbly oval jobbies with welds spattered all over the place! if you're happy/confident with the workmanship then it's down to you I suppose. Re-rimmimg isn't illegal (mounting your Volvo centres into a wider rim), but finding someone to do it wouldn't be cheap.

Ah I must have got it mixed up, thanks for clearing that up, we could've ended up with Paul4be getting arrested because I told him it was alright to do it! ;D
Nah, seriously though, as Rmad says, it's not likely you'd get caught, but it is still dodgy, but you could always get the centres put in a wider set of rims, but again I've no idea of anyone who could do that sort of thing for you.

if you are willing to import, summitracing.com used to do wide weller type cheap steel rims. think they used to be about $50 a piece.

Check bolt paterns on the Volvo and then check for US car rims if I remeber right (the 70's was long time ago) we used to run 7X14" MOPAR rims on our Amazon's, not 100% but I think that's what we used back then and it worked just fine and looked real good and different since everybody was running either Volvo 5.5" or Slot Mags.....

The 140 & B20 engined 1800E & ES onwards use a different pcd to the Amazon / PV / B18 engined 1800S.

You could always run some bigger tyres on the stock steels. I've got 206/60-14's all round. The fronts fill the arches nicely, the rears are OK, but would be better with a spacer.

Thanks all, I really like the Smoothies on Summit, had a look at them this morning, wrong fitment though. Wagoneer has come up with what I had decided to do. I was going to ask if 205/60 14's fit the standard rims with no problems (5.5 rim width is the minimum quoted for a 205/60). My wheels still have the chrome trim rings, so I might go with black rims and the chrome rims.

Paul4b, 2 of the original 205's I had were not favoured by my MOT tester as the sidewalls looked a little saggy. They were completely free though! I have since replaced these with some new ones which look and feel much better on the road. Lowering helped the appearance loads as well. The tyres looked lost before we did it.
All black wheels with the chrome trim sounds nice. I sprayed mine up with rattle cans. Budget being the operative word. I've still got to do three more.......just need the time as always.
I got my tyres from blackcircles.com as none of the local garages stocked them. It's an odd size apparently.

Wagoneer, I'll be looking at lowering as mentioned, and also need to look into uprated anti-roll bars from what I've found so far. May look at importing some of the IPD bars, but i recon that will cost about as much as I paid for the car, if not a bit more!!!!!!!! Ran 205/60 14's on a W123 Merc auto I had, great in the dry, absolutely sh*t in snow!!!!!
