I'm on there. It's not that bad. My 2.8 XJ6 (readers rides thread... retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=68111&page=1 ) came from a guy on there who didn't want it racing as it was too good. He turned down several offers from racers for the car. He was a star; to the point he even delivered the car to me in Derbyshire from Oxford. I've never had a problem with racers, they've always helped me in the past, and likewise I point them in the direction of stuff they might be able to have a use for that I won't. You do get the odd one that wants to be a bit of a pillock and try and get a reaction by "watch me race this" or putting something up for sale without any intention of selling, but thankfully it's the minority. Regards, Ric

Might be worth a look, cause i bet any Sierra's get the Pinto treatment and might be a few unloved TD engines lying around!
BTW sorry for the nOOb question: what is a Compulsory Destruction Order?

Well, as a Granny fan I guess I'm torn over Banger Racing (Mk2 Granny has it's own sub-section in the Pics page ) Still, rather than ranting about something that is a good hobby to many people and that I used to thoroughly enjoy watching as a kid I'll try to turn it into a positive (for me). I've posted up a Wanted add for stuff I need that they don't , and will continue to do so to help keep mine on the road I have also knowingly sent a car to the track (a Proton GL Emerald I bought for ÂŁ30 and rolled for 3k) - no double standards here Have some pics (not ready for the track yet): six-four - thanks for the tip dude HC.

BTW sorry for the nOOb question: what is a Compulsory Destruction Order? Insurance companies or the DVLA can issue these. Basically anything which is a Cat A or Cat B write off, plus, any car involved in registration fraud, insurance fraud and certain types of criminal activity will have CDO on it. An example. A chap up north wanted to get the money to respray his '59 Pontiac out of his insurers. So he "stole" the car, stripped it, stashed all the parts and then "abandoned" the rolling shell in a nice safe place and anonymously tipped the police off to where it could be found. He thought he'd get his car back + a handsome pay out he could get the respray done with and all. However, he got caught. The insurance company passed a CDO on the car and it ended up in the hands of a mate of a mate who is a banger racer. So this pretty much mint, straight, rust free '59 Pontiac gets bangered. So who is to blame? The guy who bangers it or the guy who tried to scam the insurance... Since the only thing can happen to it is it gets crushed and recycled once CDO is on it then it might as well get bangered. Shame, but thats the way it goes.

Got any formal notes or guidance on CDOs?
Never heard of them before. Sounds more like COD (certificate of destruction) that's issued to the DVLA. I reckon with that Pontiac it was written off, sent to an approved salvage agent and then the COD issued. Sounds fishy to me anyway, pardon the pun

Wow, this site is predictable - saw a couple of very un-specific ads posted by user names I recognised on ovalchat, first trip to RR in about 6 months and bingo! Here we are! Found on page 1!
Consider this question carefully. If you read a thread on Ovalchat entitled "lets get cars off the restorers and smash 'em up", and then ovalchat users started appearing on RR posting "wanted" adds for "Wanted mk2 grannies, bluebirds, all datsuns etc... for racing, cash paid" - what sort of response do you think there would be on RR?
I'm all for dialogue, but I've been branded a thief and a traveller on here in the past for the pure fact I am a racer (that lives in a house and has a normal job), that sort of thing sticks...
Check out the "road cars" Gallery on Ovalchat before you assume racers don't know their stuff, or appreciate owning it on the road themselves... anything worth "saving" is likely to be "saved" by the drivers themselves.
Good luck to you all

and the point of that lil rant was what? I don't think every racer on there has an road going version of the car they are racing.... it makes sence to ask... its recycling.... loving this thread tho for you people who supposedly remove all bits worth having.... fair old wack of chrome going into the oval there.... www.ovalbangerchat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=20432EDIT: that said... the above link was mearly to show what kinda stuff is there and what should be available parts wise for anyone who hasnt bothered registering.... not trying to dig at the banger scene thing....

I have tried to sell whole cars and break them on here before. People don't want them so we race them. I have kept all sorts of bits off my bangers and have kept them in storage incase someone gets in touch wanting them. I raced a hillman minx californian last year, rare car. rotten as a pear. I had advertised bits for ages before hand and no one wanted anything. After I raced it and thanks to Ovalbangerchat someone got in touch and took the half shafts away and few other bits. This meant the one he was restoring is now back on the road. don't shoot yourselves in the foot and people will help you.

*oh and the VX4/90 was a ÂŁ50 purchase off ebay to banger, but is to good for that so its going back on the road)

Two points:
1. Are not "bangers" and other race cars just another form of "modified retro cars", hence squarely on topic and welcome here? I mean, it's not exactly like a lot of retro rides on exhibit are attempting to preserve anything, especially anything originally as manufactured. So not getting the evident friction between the two "camps". Are not they merely different aesthetic expressions along the same "modified" spectrum? Yes, I think so.
2. Why cannot people go to the Ovalbangers forum and nose around without registering? This is the 4th forum mentioned here in the last 24 hours where only registered users can see the forum posts! What do the mods of these other forums think they are accomplishing by forcing gawkers to register simply to view the forum? Is this some sort of strategy to artificially jack up their bragging rights as to # of registered members? Odd, highly odd.

I didn't mean to open a can of worms. The point of all this is to try and make sure that any good cars get the chance to be saved, or that bangered vehicles get to donate some of their rare pieces to existing owners. I know a lot of banger racers are classic car owners, but a lot of them like to see rare tin ruined. Hence if you scroll down this thread you'll see a Lynx Eventer being raced, along with pre-war Buicks, Rolls Corniches.... www.ovalbangerchat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=20432

Yeah, and if you made a few enquiries you'd know that Eventer was pretty much scrap. Even the owners club didn't want it. Nor would I knowing how badly Eventers were put together to start with and the fact that the roof was crinkled.
Yes, some of the stuff is rare. But for every car that they use, more often than not there's a better one kicking around. All it inspires me to do is look harder for the ones I want. These guys put the effort in to find stuff, and put the money up too... the same applies to us. I still thank my lucky stars I got my XJ6, but I was ready to put more cash up than a racer would.
If you want to save them; start hunting for them. How much of the stuff out of the "Lets See the Abandoned Ones" has been saved; given the number of pageviews? Not many I'll bet. Half of it is apathy, or an unwillingness to share information. One guy on here posted pics of an E-type shell and didn't even have the decency to answer any questions about it, even by PM.
That is what kills the cars. If we want the good toys we need to talk to each other more, like the banger lads do so successfully; rather than going storming mob handed onto their forum.
Regards,
Ric

I've often been surprised at what the banger racers pay for car's that probably won't last more than one meeting.
