Does anyone have any experience of such a beast? I'm talking of the old skool front drive ones that look like this The are front gearbox and mid engined, so the engine sits behind the box' longitudinally, and the box drives the front wheels. I have never seen a drive configuration like this. So anyways, i am thinking of putting this on the list of possible next cars. How strong are the gearboxes? Any known engine problems? cheers J

This is the one i am looking at getting, its very interesting piece of kit. Lots of work done and in very good shape.
Wonder wha the handling is like with that engine setup?

Citroen's Traction Avant, DS, SM, and possibly also the CX use this configuration. I didn't realise that the R5 did too, or is it just the Gordini versions?

Well the later 5 turbos didnt come this way, but I'm not sure about stock 5 from the same era. The gearbox is way strong as its used lots in GT40 replicas, so it dosent mind V8 torque.

I have a suspicion that several Renner's of the same era (6, 16 etc) had the gearbox forward of the engine, and it was a feature of all early 5's Renault did go a bit insane in the late 60's / early 70's. Was it the 16 that had a different wheelbase on each side? And more to the point, why?

J, there was one of these in the local scrapyard over the summer.... got the tyres off it for my imp! Was very impressed with the car though, didn't know much about them before I saw that - the exhaust system is amazing, more or less mid-engined with turbo up at the front near the headlights. Ive got a set of bilsteins if you get one!

I always wondered about that - it MUST make the handling a bit odd, surely?

J I always thought it was the Renault 30 gearbox that was used in all those mid-engined jobs? Did Lotus Europa use R16 'box? Anyway, my mum had a '78 5GTL years ago, high-torque bigger capacity engine from memory with long gearing to give better economy. I remember that used to jump out of 4th, but fortunately it didn't on the test drive when she sold it.... However, given how long the R5 has been raced for, surely someone out there must know them inside out? Ace wheels on the Turbo!

That’s right, I don’t think the 5 box is the same as in ‘big’ Renaults (20/30/25/espace etc). Same layout but different box.

Yeah been scouting that site for a bit, its where the picture came from. They seem like good little cars, nice advanced engine, where else do you see a long runner turbo manifold that keeps the pulses split?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts
