For some reason, my reversing lights aren't working properly . It's been an intermittent problem (for the last few days), which will no doubt make it fun to trace. However, all the other lights are fine. Anyone know how easy is it to get at the switch on the gearbox? Also, where would I find the relay for that circuit? I've checked the Haynes manual, and that's no help, beyond a schematic wiring diagram which has no reference to the actual location of many electrial components..... This morning they were working again, and also when I left work, but when I got home, just as I was reversing into a parking space, they cut out :-( There have been no problems using overdrive, so I'm guessing that the gearbox earthing is fine. Any ideas what could be causing this? Cheers!

Most probably a loose or broken wire, although what can sometimes happen, especially on an older car is the plunger on the reversing light switch wears away on the end so it doesnt get pushed in far enough. You can repair them but it might just be easier to fit a new switch. Theres no relays on a reversing light circuit so thats one less thing to look for.

are you having any probs with the other rear lights?have you checked the earths for the lights themselves? if you have then I'm stumped to think of any other possibilities other than the relay or dodgy wires. the rear lights on my old manta 400 rep were like disco lights, cleaned the earths and bulb housings and robert was my mothers brother. may help, may not, hope you get it sorted soon.

Cheers guys!
It's not the bulbs, as the problem is intermittent. The rest of the lights are all working fine, as is the overdrive, so I don't think it's an earthing issue either with the light units or with the gearbox itself.
I'm hoping it's just a loose contact somewhere or the relay (there is one according to the wiring diagram) is playing up, as if it's the switch, that will be a pain. It's above the overdrive on the back of the gearbox so basically inaccessible from underneath unless the car is on a lift, and I don't think it can be reached from inside the car either...

I had the same issue with the GT it got so bad that they stopped working for a while, Now they kinda do but After realising they are not Req for your MOT I thought to hell with it, I was spending weekend after weekend Tracing the issue.
Still the same now however I think its the Switch as they are prone to going

they are not Req for your MOT Interesting! Do you know if this is not required as in not tested, or not legally required to work? Plan B is probably going to be a buzzer switch on the dash, until such a time as it's convenient to deal with properly.

Well Mine are still Present mate and they never check them. So no need to worry if you cant resolve the issue. I know its always good to have reversing lamps but in my case its just not worth the hassle until I remove the Transmission for a type 9 or something

Reversing lights are not an mot requirment on any year of car I just had a thought, it might be worth checking the bulb anyway as sometimes the filament can break and just make ocasional contact causing that intermitantness. (is that a word? ;D)

As far as i knew no cars get tested for reverse lights. My Toledos got them wired into a swich on the dash i think reverse lights were a dealer fitted option ;D

We used to check them when I worked at an MOT test centre, but that was 8 years ago

The problem is that the Amazon has them built-in to the rear light units (factory fitment), so I can't just disconnect them :-( This morning they were working again

How peculiar. Looked on the VOSN website and it just says the lights are checked, makes no specific mention of reversing lights, but then it doesn't specifically mention brake lights either. I suppose it's up to the discression of the tester now
