Didn't see that one coming! Gonna be a mega hauler, somehow i'm expecting airbags at the back so you can drop the on the floor for unloading? Matt

I don´t want to hijack Johns new thread but I´ll fill in the gaps and answer a few questions. The whole thing started a few months ago when Mrs Oldbus and i decided we wanted a camper, fine i thought, the van will need modifying but i´m up for that so once the Capri was sorted i started cutting a few holes in it to take the windows that we wanted. Then we went to an "Oltimer Treff" in Lobbach. GTV John came over from Brussels and before we left we got nattering in the garage (as you do) John came up with the fantastic idea about building a Race Transporter for his GT6. Without making any decisions or really planning anything serious we went to Lobbach where i saw this 1955 Setra S6.... Well after seeing this i decided on the spot that our camper was too small and that no matter what it takes i want one! ;D Luckily for me my misses agreed so within five minutes i´d theoretically sold all our fleet, built a new carport for all my curse word at home and extended the garage to take the Setra John realised i was serious about it and added two and two together, so we got out the tape measure and started measuring Spitfires and Taunus Transits at the Treff. Once we got back home John and i talked business for about 2 seconds and the deal was done... ;D To answer the "how could you´s" the van has an Historical registration and will be registered on a collectors 07 numberplate which means it doesn´t have to go through the TÜV so modifying this one instead of building a new one is going to be a lot easier for us. More importantly John wanted this one and not a copy of it, it´s in very good condition and although it looks a bit sorry for itself at the moment will be back up to scratch in Spring. yep I can see where your going with this one now . its gonna look good is it long enough or will it need a little adding on ? Should be alright as it is as Mark, as the ramp on the back will be going up above the drivers roof a bit. That's just mad!!! I like it much better than the recent "sensible camper" idea which seemed just to... uhm, sensible ;D Will it still have the sensible diesel engine? With the extra weight on the back you might need some bigger brakes anyway, so you might as well go back to the 24V, right? ;D Oh, and assuming that OB will be building a camper out of the Setra next, now that would make a really cool camper as it's proper size for a cool camper! Just to put things into perspective - the original 1500cc petrol engine has 50bhp - the "sensible" diesel that is still going in has 3000cc and 90bhp As far as the weight goes the van is well within it´s tolerances with the Triumph on the back - the Taunus Transit has a payload of 1250kgs the GT6 will weigh in somewhere around 600-650KGs Siert, the Setra S6 will be restored and definately be fitted out as a camper (when i can find one!) whats gonna be going in the front to be able to lug the car about?? As explained Mark, it´ll be a 300D engine out of a Merc W123 Didn't see that one coming! Gonna be a mega hauler, somehow i'm expecting airbags at the back so you can drop the on the floor for unloading? Matt No airbags needed Matt. I´ll make some ramps up that will disapear under the floor when not in use. So wish us luck that all goes well. I´ll update the thread as and when i get the bodywork sorted. If all goes as planned i´d like to have the metalwork out of the way before the weather turns cold and concentrate on the running gear with the garage door closed in winter. I don´t see why we can´t get it done for Classic Ford at Santa Pod in May 2010(nothing like a bit of pressure eh John

Well with the theory out of the way it´s time to get stuck in..... First job was to very very carefully remove the windscreen, these are rarer than a rare thing that don´t come up too often Then i whipped off all the doors to give us a bit of room to work John wants as much van as possible ie the finished project should look like a van and not a lorry. To achieve this look i want to make all the modifications look as original as possible. First job will be to get the roof sorted, so i marked up the rear of the van roof and chopped it out with the angle grinder... This bit will then be grafted on the cab roof, much like an original single cab would look like... next job was to take a big deep breath...... and chop the roof off ;D too late now methinks... ;D I think the next pic gives a rough idea wht it will look like when it´s done... ...more later ;D

I've been mulling the transporter idea over for a loooong time, and OB had a spare van chassis - but this came to fruition because of the Setra owner showing up at Lobbach. The GT6 is/has been sitting at SOC's gaff for a while after I couldn't resist a la E-Bay...... as you do. One click later and the spaceframed, stripped out mental looking track baby was mine. It has no running gear - NOTHING - so I've been holding fire until I found a donor...... step up Nissan ZX Turbo - to the fore if you please. I've now got a complete car - it was already stripped for track use - as donor once I thrash the ar*e off it test it thoroughly.
I'll be building the GT6 over the winter - with a couple of hauls over to OB towers to double check everything will go as expected.
Both myself and Dave came in from our intial measuring and planning with huge grins on our faces - so Ulla (Mrs OB) knew something was up!
Tally-ho!

Lovely girl that she is...... getting taken in by you two Rogues. Really is a great Win Win for both of you. Dave and Family are all between 6'8" and Ulla the shorty at 6' , so the Transit would never really do. The Setra is perfect for the job. I guess in years to come, this bus will be one of those projects people talk about, when discussing real transition and commitment. I am pleased it has gone this way.

Mega R.E.S.P.E.T.C Gotta say I think it would look better with the GT6 horizontal and hanging over the back a little as per the VWs

Majorly gobsmacked.
Really mixed emotions, seems such a shame to cut up such an awesome well recognised van, but then I have no doubt it'll end up turning into something spectacular......
