Can't wait to see this finished....
Is good to see a classic van being put to use hauling cargo.
Can the rear suspension take the weight of a car without modification??

Can't wait to see this finished.... Is good to see a classic van being put to use hauling cargo. Can the rear suspension take the weight of a car without modification?? The van will take 1250kg payload so it should be alright as it is Jon. (The GT6 will be weighing in at around 600-650kg) We can always spruce up the back leaf springs a bit if necessary! I managed to get a couple of hours in on the van the last couple of days. The roof section is coming on nicely and should look how Ford intended by the time i´m finished hopefully. As the van is egg shaped (looking from above) the roof section i chopped off the back doesn´t quite fit but by flattening the old guttering i was able to win a couple of mm and get it to fit properly... Sorry for the lousy diagramm (i´m better with an anglegrinder than a mouse ) but this will give you a rough idea of what the frame will look like that´s going to support the flatbed. I´m still at the mocking up stage as i need to finish off the other side of the roof first but you get the idea... ;D I think i´ll remake the drivers side C post and fit the side door then turn the van around and get stuck into the other side. I might get a a couple of hours in tonight but we leave for Sparkford tomorrow morning and i need to pack the Capri, the next update will have to wait until next week ;D

Grizz told me about this last night, urm.... Seriously though, this thread is so full of win it makes me cry through pride just a little bit. It will be immense when it's built, so to all the h8rz, h8 when it's finished if you have to, but until this machine is built, sit back, shush yo mouths and enjoy the build! I respect your skills and lunacy in equal measure. Chris

Cheers Chris, was having a natter with John this afternoon about the thread and it´s hardly surprising that there are a few people out there that are not too keen on the vans new look. Anyway moving along, i skived off work early this afternoon as i wanted to get everything packed for tomorrow morning and wanted to get some "van time" in too.... ..next job up is to get the "C" post sorted out. To get it in the right position i first need to fit the test door and then finish off cutting out the hole in the side panel... The floor bottom bit needed bending over at floor level... ...and the old Post needed removing... Test door hung in place to take some detailed measurements... I then modified some box section to match the curve of the outer skin... ..and then bent over the end with a hammer and dolly took a while to get it right but with the "new" C post in place it looks quite good methinks I´m using the old back door to test fit everything but i won´t be able to use it unfortunately as its curved to match the rear of the van and not flat as the side panels are... as i don´t have a spare rear door i´ll either have to "straighten" out this one a bit or build one from scratch...see what mood i´m in when i get back from the Gathering ;D Thanks for all your support and as we leave for Sparkford tomorrow morning see you all there ;D

Wow... it just doesn't seem like it was all together for 5 minutes and then you went and pulled it apart! Hats off to you, I was kinda waiting for the next installment of the 24v van with uber brakes and going like sh!t off a shovel, but this....? Wow.
Well, good luck with it mate, I hope it all works out the way you planned, and I think that it will be a lot more useful as a transporter than it was as a bus. I take it that you are going to use the underneath of the transporter shelf as parts and tools storage? May I offer a suggestion of building a box frame and having slide-out metal boxes that carry all the parts? That's how the trucks do it in the Dakar - stops things sliding about and keeps it neat and tidy...

There´s a fridge, gas bottle, generator, winch, batteries, tool box and god knows what else going in there, a pair of retractable ramps will need to go in there too and i need to be clever with some spare wheels and tyres but they will probably end up on the roofrack. I´ll be making it in two layers with the top bit having acces from the cab, i like your idea with the boxes and will definately steal borrow that idea for the bottom half if it´s alright with you!

this is most excellent.. cant beleive i missed this thread!! its probably the single cause for the lack of posts in general chat lol...
looks like a great plan and gotta say its nice to see someone with the nuts to just go for it!!
on another note tho.. i noticed the lil triumph is pretty damn near the ground with a long nose ahead of the wheels...
is the rear of the truck (the bed for the triumph) going to follow the line of the panel thats angled up one side? as is it just me or is the nose of the triumph gonna ground out unloading???
don't know if what i just said makes sence? basically is the angle of the bed going to be to drastic for the triumph to roll off with out ripping its own front end off? lol

Between them I cannot see it being allowed to bottom out the spoiler.

So, what engine is going in this Dave, are you still converting it to the merc engine? Still going with the Merc engine mate, with an automatic box. I´ll be taking some measurements from a W124 250D and if it doesn´t fit it´ll end up with a 300D out of a W123...well that´s the cunning plan anyway! ;D Nice job with the roof dave. Looking great. So is there going te be some kind of pulling system on the ramp so you kan pull the racecar on to it?? Michiel, i´ll be fitting an electric winch underneath the flatbed with some sort of roller system to pull the GT6 up the bed.... You forgot to mention the bed ;-) Real enthousiasts sleep under their car Can´t see there being any room for a bed in there but don´t worry there´s plenty of spare room in the trailer for a bed! this is most excellent.. cant beleive I missed this thread!! its probably the single cause for the lack of posts in general chat lol... looks like a great plan and gotta say its nice to see someone with the nuts to just go for it!! on another note tho.. I noticed the lil triumph is pretty damn near the ground with a long nose ahead of the wheels... is the rear of the truck (the bed for the triumph) going to follow the line of the panel thats angled up one side? as is it just me or is the nose of the triumph gonna ground out unloading??? don't know if what I just said makes sence? basically is the angle of the bed going to be to drastic for the triumph to roll off with out ripping its own front end off? lol Cheers mate, know what you mean, got that one covered. I´ll be building two ramps that will hook up to the back of the flatbed to help reduce the loading angle. The GT6 will also be getting standard wheels and tyres for when it´s going on the back so that we gain a bit of ground clearance. If you look at todays pictures you´ll get a pretty good idea about the angle of the flatbed, the ramps will be built when i´ve got the GT6 at home so I can take some decent measurements and try it out before we get it wrong! Ive not seen the going on's for a while, then I see the van is no more but seeing what you have done and what you can do I'm not worried at all, it will be one cool transporter for sure! Great work chaps!! Hope so mate, fingers crossed! Holy mother I thought that pic of the van cut up was a photoshop!!! Nearly had a heart attack to discover it wasn't! But flak me this is gonna look good when it's done!!! I'm converted! Go OB Go!!! ;D No photoshops here mate, i´m better with an anglegrinder than with a computer mouse! Time for an update. Well after a fantastic week off coming over for the Gathering it was time to catch up and do a couple of double shifts in the garage this weekend... One of the things that i´ve been worried about is the width of the flatbed at the top. The main frame is now tacked in place, it´s still going to get a lot more bracing before it´s up to the job. To get the maximun width out of the van bodywork it would mean me losing the left hand door as there´s not enough room widthwise for two side doors and the GT6 in between... Before... After... Basically what i´ve done is made up a new left hand rear side out of a spare door and welded it in solid...it´s still going to be tight but we should get away with it now. So with the "new" side panel in I could start closing off a few of the gaps... Original Ford panels... The angle of the ramp now gives the angle to cut off the excess metal...i just put a new cutting disc on the big anglegrinder and let it slide down the ramp. The green stuff is GFK filler which stops the filler sagging on joints... followed by a thin skim of normal filler to smooth everything off.. Well it´s still looking a bit sorry for itself and if i´d have thought of this before cutting out the holes for the windows i´d have saved myself a lot of work, but never mind....we´ll get there in the end! Thanks for stopping by.....
