Well, this seemd to go down well at Santa Pod today
I remember seeing a photo of something along these lines in a US rod magazine probably 15 years ago and stuck it in the back of my mind as a must do one day project. The day came when I picked this scooter up for £3 from the Autojumble at the Enfield Pageant at the end of May.
Then, on the Chesterfield Ruin with Kev From Wales, bringing Borgward parts down he donated a dodgy rim, dodgy tyre and some taller bars to the cause allowing this positional mock up.
First thing I did was lower it a bit by chopping the tubes off the headstock and welding them on as low as I could.
The wheel had been drilled (badly, twice!) to Ford four stud so I picked up one of the struts that came off the Hillman (same hub PCD) and attacked it. I cut a wedge out, bent and welded so that the tube would be pependicular to the hub and just clear the tyre.
Having cut the back section off the frame and more mocking up I wanted to give it more rake with the front of the frame as low as possible so used a couple of the offcuts to extend the front tubes. I used some tube picked up at the council tip to join the strut to the frame. This lady was pulling these lengths of steel tube with nice bends out of her car and I thought they might come in handy. They were once a trampoline.
Middle tube was lengthened later.
All parted lined up carefullt then welded. Hoorah!
I made the joints between stut and frame as sturdy as possible considering the (adult) weight they have to take! Original frame tubes pass through the new cross tube before welding and the strut was notched and wrapped around the cross tube as well.
I decided not to bother filling due to time constraints so just hit the frame with some left over spray cans from modeling.
Together!
And some added details. The foot plate is a piece of an old wooden drawer/box that was lying around. I left one end with the dovetail joint still there.
Wheel was nasty! I later cut out an aluminium disc and knocked out two studs so it all looks smoother.
Was trying to find something to finish the end of the strut where the ball joint bolted. 1 3/4" SU ram pip did the trick. Its not round any more! (Edd!!! )
And theres an old red reflector on the other side I picked up for nought a couple of years ago and stuck in the shed. I still want to find a better looking front wheel or do something with this one but I may or may not get around to that now.
