I've read about it being done before...but I've never seen any. Until now: 11" 911 rims! I wonder if the 'band' is cut from billet, or if it's taken from another wheel? I want my Lotus rims taken out to 10" now! Anyone think they can handle it?

Sounds like trouble to me! I don't think alloys would take as well as steels would.......
<Bang> "what was that", "oh, me alloy just split in two"
Or am I mad...

Banded wheels are illeeeeeeegal aren't they? Only if you get caught! mind you, when the police find you buried backwards in a ditch, half a wheel on display, I'm sure they'll twig! 'They were on the car when I bought it'...

But it's only welding isn't it? A professional alloy welder must be able to do it surely?
Failing that, I've got some super glue and duct(sp) tape handy!

I've seen aluminium BMX frames ([reminisce]ah, the PK Ripper[/reminisce]) break on non-weld areas and the same on Chromoly frames too. A good weld is easily as strong as a non-welded piece isn't it? Those Fuchs don't look weak to me? Any engineers care to shed some light?

There's no reason why the welds won't be as strong as the 'base' material. Having said that if the original wheels were heat treated, that will have gone out the window during welding, and there's no way of knowing if the heat-treatment has been re-done after welding.
I think banded steels are safer than banded alloys...

Cant see a problem if its done properly. Some custom alloys are welded to start with (Ever watched American Hotrod? Their wheels are all welded) Could just convert them to use a split rim outer. Could even have to bolts on the outside so you couldent see them

Could just convert them to use a split rim outer. Like Dimma split-rims (made with original Peugeot centres):

Yeh that kind of thing. Force racing were doing it to mini wheels at one point.
I was going to do it that way to a set of Exacton mini special rims that i have untill Image stopped making the rims for them (silly-billies, now everyone with 10 or 12" image wheels cant get spare rims ffs!)

When listing modifications to the insurrance company (when a 'decent/understandable' one is found), the one mod they wont allow is if you state you've got 'banded' wheels.

I've recently had to fill in a 'Modified Vehicle Report' (for Adrian Flux), and the section on wheels asks: Presumably this means that they will allow them if they are pukka / professionally made, but won't allow DIY ones??
