Woke up this morning with my heart sinking into my lower body, the pull of regret has promptly set in from not buying, or at least bidding on Rob’s (ex-) Marina Coupe on the ‘bay last night. After much discussion and negativity from the parents I let it slip, foolishly. My advice for anyone who spots a nice car that sticks in your mind, making you check ebay every 30minutes for updates and another quick perv, go for it. Forget what people say or if the wife threatens divorce, at least you will stay clear of the hangover-like feeling of regret. Do it. Liam P.S Hello to all from a new-ish member- anyone got any advice on a first car classic? Much appreciated

Spanner! Told ya to buy it if ya liked it But Ebay is very bad for cars...there's always another one, or another one, or another...that's just that bit too far, not quite convenient, not quite right, etc etc...plus, always worth driving and seeing first not just buying blind!

Always follow ya heart mate, i made the mistake of when looking for my first classic researching every practical classic with cheap insurance that has ever rolled off a production line, thus i spent about half a year trying to decide what was best out of a list of about 20 different types of cars from the Austin A40 Farina to the Volvo 140, they all have their own pro's and con's and so in the end realy comes down to your own gut feeling. The Marina isnt slow, coupe looks the dogs gonads, cheap insurance, good mpg, lots of spares and aftermarket kit out there. If you like the Marina, hunt one down as soon as possible, don't dilly daddle! ;D Good luck

Hello and welcome to the board.
Too many retro options to name them all. What you looking for something to restore, something to modify or something to use every day? Keep looking through the classic cars section on ebay to try and get a few ideas once you get a shortlist then keep an eye out for a good one coming a long.
Or alternatively do what I do and buy every thing thats going ;D ;D

My parents don't technically* know I've got the Datsun, after we had discussions earlier in the year over my potential purchase of a Mk1 Cortina with a V8 fitted...... I'm married with my own house, a dog, a cat, a good job and I'm 30 next year,.. you'll never leave it behind *I suspect they may have worked out by now (due in part to my dad reading this forum), but no one is saying anything. Which is a shame because I'm really proud of my car

I'd say follow your heart. What can you do about parents ... they won't let me have 3 Skoda's! Ever thought about owning a Skoda?!

when he was alive, my dad was always 100% behind me in whatever choice i made. my mam however, still frowns upon some of the cars i buy.but then she has a go and loves them.she hated the 411 til she drove it. she really liked the hearse and the manta 400 rep. dare'nt let her have a go of the merc cos she wouldnt give me the keys back ;D
i say just buy what you want and deal with the consequences later.they're never really that bad anyway. they'll get over it.

i avoid that situation by cutting to the chase, and just turning up with another rusted hunk of coolness, and a big grin ;D

By the sound of things, I'm quite lucky then - my Amazon was a family hand down, and the Sprite was bought from a friend of my dad's, so not surprisingly dad likes both my cars. Mum just about manages to tolerate them though....
If you can afford to buy, fix, maintain , fuel and insure the car that you want, then go for it!
