Right then, it all started with this retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=58062&page=1
And last Friday I finally picked it up ;D and amazingly it made it the 130miles with only one breakdown which was fixed by wacking the SU fuel pump! Put that on the list of things to upgrade
So the transport to get to the car -
Yep I flew back just to pick up the thing - did rather make it a pricy trip though! oh well can't put a price on fun On top of that my mate Nathan (N on here) drove me down and acted as support vehicle so a massive thanks to him for getting involved in one of my daft ideas again
So the photos of the car its self
The paint looks a lot better in the pics than it is, its flat and over some scuffed bodywork, so I'll bring the respray forward, but more on that in a bit. Plus on the back the extra fog lights and reverse lights have got to go, as have the side indicators, and the wing mirrors - all easy to change. I'll stick a black silver plate on there too even though I shouldn't!
Other pics, hardtop
Not a bad fit, but again needs finishing (hence the tape!), weekend with the filler and paint should sort it, plus some trim, but seems to keep the water out
Now I'm not a fan of E-types without light covers, fortunately these came with it which saves me a small fortune ;D
Going to have to do a lot of work to get them to fit as the bonnet has had the mounting bits removed, but nothing that can't be solved.
Big question is whether to keep the original types with chrome, or use them as templates for some plastic ones and go for the lightweight racer look. I'm tempted to as the bumper chrome ain't great so it would save a few hundred quid, which I could do with for getting a few other bits of missing trim! Might look cooler too
More boxes of bits, going to need a day to sort all this!
All in all it doesn't need much mechanically, its been very well put together with a lot of thought and mostly new parts. This has lead to some parts needing adjustment (had to adjust the front lower ball joints before driving home) and I'll go over everything with a spanner just to check, but it felt very solid driving back.
So the engine
Pulls like a train, but is running rich and a little off at idle. Its also got one very noisy tappet and a touch of cam chain rattle on light load, I'm putting this down to the fact it was rebuilt with a new valve seat on No.1 so probably hasn't been reshimmed quite right. Not a big job to sort all that, but does mean taking the cams out still sure a day or two will see it running like a Jag should, at least it already makes a beautiful sound through the stainless exhaust
What else, interior.
Its not bad really, everything seems to work ok, but I'm going to spend some time and money making it look a bit more period, so rocker switches, alloy centre concle top, hide the radio. Seats ain't that comfy on a long trip either so I think I'll get some Corba Classics and the Radio and speakers will be hidden. Bit like this
Oh and it needs this that my parents got for my Bday
;D
Finally I need to fit some heat reflective stuff to the trans tunnel as it makes the car like a slow over at the moment - not fun having a cold head and boiling legs! Again easy to sort
So that's all the basics, now the important part - ideas ;D
First the overall look of the thing, well I love the idea of a lightweight look and its a lot cheaper to make look good given the cost of E-type chrome work! Something like this
Actually I think that 2nd photo has convinced me to use the glass and chrome type light covers, can always go to plastic later!
The stance isn't far off, and the front shocks are height adjustable so I can have a play there, actually it might need to come up a bit
But that lovely body needs setting off with some nice wheels. Now I know Dunlops or wires are the obvious choices, but a bit too obvious for me, so what do people think about these?
BRM's from Image, damn expensive, but got to be worth it right? I'm thinking silver centres to go with the body colour I'm thinking of - which is.....
Ecurie Ecosse colours, as well whilst I love BRG the Escort is basically that colour, and again I'd like something a little different to red or white, even though both look great.
So that's the plans so far, now I just need to get back and get one with it
Give me your thoughts (with piccys ) guys as I'm always open to a bit of inspiration
