I'm not sure how to tackle this thread. So far I've got away with not doing it but a few of you have seen my garage and I've been exposed by Grizz so now I have to. There's a lot to go in so I'll keep it in one thread and add it s-l-o-w-l-y as my bandwidth allows I'll kick off with my jet scooter. I built a large-ish pulsejet as part of my final year project at university. It's made from mild steel pipe and rolled sections with a 2" exhaust. It runs on propane and output is about 15lbs of thrust I think, can't remember. Naturally with a jet in the shed you need a scooter to put it on so I lengthened one of those metal kick scooters and mounted the jet on the back. This is what I ended up with: Note how there's no throttle and no brake. Power is controlled by winding in the regulator which is about 5 turns from off to 4 bar of gas pressure: Noisy end where all the fire comes out: Intake, sucks the hairs off your legs: And as with most of my toys it folds up and neatly stashes in the corner How does it go? Well it makes a proper load of noise, glows red hot, there's fire, explosions and a real risk of getting hurt. It doesn't actually go all that fast because it doesn't have a huge amount of thrust for the weight of a person. I have ridden it and slipped off and when the weight is off the deck it tries to fly off. So consider this the mk1 and there's a mk2 in the pipeline with brakes, proper throttle control and somewhere better to stand. And a little more thrust of course Here's a youtube video of some early testing. It's all the footage I have but the jumping camerman who starts to back off when I wind it up gives you an idea how loud it is! Running procedure is sparkplug on, gas on, shoot some air in the front with a leaf blower to start it, turn the sparkplug off and wind the gas up. At the end you see a shower of sparks fly out the front and the motor stops. This is the valves destoying themselves before I had found suitable material for them and I experimented with a tuned valveless intake for indefinite running. Short video here: There, that's not such a bad start, don't know what I was so worried about ;D

The Christmas I first started testing this I had no idea how loud it was going to be. At about 7:30pm I was ready to go and after a bit of messing around we got it running. Once it stopped there was a shout over the fence from a few doors down: "What the bloody hell is making that noise!!!" "It's a jet" "Oh" And that was that ;D

hey thats cool if it don't have enough power just build add another jet to the scooter could you maybe run a control cable to the handle bars.

Thats awesome! This is the crazy sorta stuff I'd build if I had the materials. Was expecting more flameyness out the jet though. Looks fairly simple though, I mean... Its not rocket science is it? XD Sorry, been wanting to use that. You must show us more creations!

Ever had a go at this in your inventing lab? Looks like it'd be right up your alley...

Next up is this spudmatic gun. I built it on Tuesday so I've got build pictures as well and it's doomed for the Lemans trip to terrorise my camping mates. Just like a normal spudmatic, just bigger and more powerful. Plan was to make a little reservoir out of steel tube that I can pump up with a bike pump and have a ball valve at the other end to let it all out at once. No fire, reliable and repeatable tried and tested method which I used last week on one of the gags at work, for firing a model Polaris missile. Start with a bit of 75mm tube, this bit is 250mm long: It needs two endcaps, one with a hole in it. Cut these out with a 1mm blade in the angle grinder, then clean them up with a flap wheel. The hole is cut with a Screwfix holesaw which has lasted just 3 holes in 2mm steel: (I'm not all pro using engineers blue but the way, the steel I had happened to have it on already) Through that hole is going a brass tank fitting, a common plumbing fitting for 15mm copper pipe: Fits through the hole like so: I've drilled a hole in the side so I can squish through a tyre valve that I got from the local tyre place: This is the only difficult bit for most people, welding the ends on: The tank fitting needs to be tightened up before the end is welded on so I cranked it up paggin' tight with some PTFE inside, welded in short stitches and cooled in water each time to stop too much heat getting to the brass: It's assembled with a lever ball valve tap thing, again, another common plumbing part with compression fittings so no tapping or soldering needed: Testing. The good news is it works pretty well. The pump is a bit rubbish but 40psi sends a 15mm slug of potato clean over the 3 stories of flats in my building. 100psi sends it right over the block adjacent and 160psi (which is pretty much all I can manage with all my weight on the pump) goes about 75 metres down the road with a bit of recoil. I'm chuffed, first toy for the camping trip in June is complete. Better stock up on potatoes Have a video:

I like the spud gun - I've made a few and found that the length of the barrel make a lot of difference. I used 22mm copper for the chamber and 15mm for the barrel, with 3 metres of 22mm (1.5 metres each side, to a T and then the valve making a very elongated m shape) and 1.5 metres of 15mm for the barrel. Using a potato to seal it, I fired a 5ft length of plain 14mm dowel well over 400 (The field we were on was 400m long and it easily cleared it :S) this was at 100psi.
It will fire 6 inch nails into trees, burying the head an inch in!

My hydragas pump goes up to 400PSI odd if you want to have a play with that?

What about a 12v compressor?

cool. do you have to smack the valve open quickly? what about having it spring loaded with a trigger to release ?

Thats awesome, i started making a spud canon but i am going to make one like that now. Nice and simple and no fire. Would be great to see it shooting some targets!

It will fire 6 inch nails into trees, burying the head an inch in! I wondered what would happen if I left the bolt in there It would definitely go better if I could shove it down a longer barrel. May have to make a little musket barrel tamper to go with it. The main plan of that end barrel is I've got a bad full of the little sealing olives so I can make a selection of different barrels that just screw on for different ammo. I reckon another 2" tank fitting in the end of some 2" steel pipe would go quite well with bigger vegetables You Jonny are a nutcase! Bloody love it What about a 12v compressor? Plan. Mine goes up to 260psi cool. do you have to smack the valve open quickly? what about having it spring loaded with a trigger to release ? Just whanging it open quickly seems to do the trick. The mk2 may have something like that...
