As The title says..... Due to the recent petrol thing and generally escalating motoring costs, I am thinking of a new Retro/Modern ride. I want it to be fun, reliable and capable of taking a ragging on Track/drift days. It`ll be my daily driver too ;D I am thinking of doing something old and Lightweight with a modern 1300cc or less Screamer motor in it.... Car engine not Bike Needs to be smallish and RWD so thinking Kadett/Shuvit size Engines wise, must be able to go North/South, be lightweight, revvy, Normally aspirated etc Thinking Nissan Micra 1300 16v on Throttle bodies or Bike carbs Toyota Yaris motor ? The kind of thing that can be picked up in Scrappies easily for peanuts and stripped of all the curse word ;D ;D CAr that is free on Road tax would be cool as well Current favorite is Early Kadett B or HB Viva 2dr saloon with a Micra 1300 16v on Bike Carbs.... 2 lightweight buckets and a Cage with minimal Carpet etc Think of that Grey stripped clean VW Mk1 Golf and apply to RWD Small retro Sugestions please, and piccies are always nice ;D

How about a small rear drive BMC / BL car (there's loads to choose from!!) with a K series and Sierra gearbox? Someone I know on another forum has a 1.4 K series in a rubber bumper Midget, and it's rather quick - apparently does about 40mpg too ;D

Old datsun, Mazda or Toyota coupe/saloon + 13B turbo ... you did say a 1300 car engine

I'm musing over such a project myself - I need to redress the balance with the big heavy old Merc, especially once that V8 goes in (due for completion sometime in 2025 ) RWD Toyota Starlet with Zetec power? Early MiniMetro with 1400 K-Series - in theory not a hard conversion... aren't they basically the same chassis as the later 100's? Mk1 Fiesta with Zetec lump - keep it in the family! Daihatsu Domino with Smart FourTwo engine?!

yeh also i am thinking of this, cant have another car but might adres the lack of power and dreadful fuel consumption by moving to a smaller but better engine i'm thinking 2.0 though for me.
what about just get a honda civic or something a 1600cc 16v will still be fast nimble and economical to surely?

Must be RWD though Otherwise I`ll just build a Mk1 Golf with a NA 20v on TB`s ;D Seriously, There is something very nice about sub 1400cc Screamers and a lightweight rwd car = Fun by the bucket load I just keep thinking back to my old Viva and Kadett Viva was 1256, no power but no grip either but what it did have is perfect balance, Kadett was 1200 Opel lump and again great fun, if a little more tail happy than the Viva..... Needed a Bag of sand in the boot through the winter ;D Something along those lines, with a bit more power, LSD,Decent brakes and 7x13"s and 175/50s and more importantly, Modern reliability. Like the CCC type cars...... drive to work all week and have some fun at the weekends, Running costs would be Sweet FA, Tyres are affordable, Cheap classic insurance/Road Tax Quick enough to have fun in, without it hurting too much when it all goes wrong ;D The Audi is Great, but its a bit "Play station" wet or dry, point it, squirt it, does nothing untoward and you have to provoke it to misbehave, which it only does grudginley and at Stoopid speeds as well Great in the snow and wet but

when you say lightweight rwd ... how lightweight does it need to be. you know the old e30 straight 6 race cars (used in ETCC) before the M3 came along weighed in at about 950kg. and thats obviously with a rollcage aswell.. so i duno just food for thought.

Micra engines are awsome screamers. What about X19? not my favorite but uno turbo fits. been thinking Shaft drived motorbike engine in my shuv Yamaha FJR 1300 160BHP 6 speed and being a cruising bike a bit more every day usable on the road. Having said that just been out in the Shuv playing in Local industrial estates and its a sideways hand full now!
kp60/70 Starlet? bit rare but screamers.

1300 crossflow can be taken to 8k without too much probs. my standard one would hit 7k pretty easily ;D ;D. failing that, J engines are the ones to look out for for a screamer, vtec in particualr

No FWD, how about a Fiat 127 1300GT racer from the Fiat challenge series, the engines will rev to 10K ,lift off for oversteer

Tax exempt too. Sticks like s**t to a blanket too, when you want it to. Should go like ***k. Well, it better! ;D But then maybe I am biased... ImpManiac

i'd go imp or midget. My mates dad has the bike engined imp hillclimb car - thats mad. and another mate has a midget - he's got the triumh 1500 engine, but the more common 1275 is more tunable. Many people go for the K-series or similar and Type9 box conversion but you don't need to. He has the end out on every roundabout. The car weights naff all and makes 90bhp.
