I could really do with a big ol' estate with a tow bar, pref diesel to do a bit of lunking around of hefty stuff. I don't want anything nancy and I'd prefer something that is a bit on the interesting side but 100% dependable... sub £500, pref... Anyone got any suggestions?

Didn't Volvo make a diesel version of the 7 / 9 series? If not, how about a Pug 505 or an early Espace?

XM turbo diesel estate later ones much more reliable than early. Not too thirsty. Fits your whole house in the back. Stylish (to the max!) Cost 8p to buy and you can always sell it to an antique dealer for 8p when your done with it.

Finding a Datsun 280C, Mazda 929 or Toyota CROWN would be a mission, but ultimately worth it. Failing that I'd go with a Volvo 240.

There might be a certain 929 estate available soon... if MrSigma can't re-adopt her! (The Benz is making a comeback!)

Didn't Volvo make a diesel version of the 7 / 9 series? If not, how about a Pug 505 or an early Espace? You're right, they did. And not just 740s, there were some diesel 760s too, you know, the one with the better interior etc, but diesel RWD Volvos aren't as easy to come by as petrols. They do appear on ebay a fair bit though, as far as I know there were some factory diesel 240s too, plus I've seen the odd one converted, if you keep an eye on ebay you might just find one. Failing that there are Granadas, Carltons, old Mercs and BMWs of various kinds, the choices are endless, but I know for a fact that you'll get a perfectly dependable, very diesel Volvo 7 series estate for £500 if you look hard enough, round here they're going for £100 in the Autotrader, keep an eye on that, plus ebay, plus the local paper, and something along those lines'll probably come up.

Has that certain 929 got a tow bar (sadly essential) Ah, no unfortunately not. Does carry masses of stuff though. I recently moved business premises, and did it in two trips! Van hire? What van hire?! ;D
