I don't know, fuel pumps were in the boot, but all the wiring was fused and ran through grommets, all hoses were proper fuel hoses and clamped on properly with new hose clips. I'm gutted, its just sinking in, might be able to salvage the engine, and possibly the box if it hasnt melted, car is insured but i want the car not the money.

BUMHATS Exactly what i was thinking. Bad luck mate, glad you are ok though, body parts are much harder to replace than car parts. Hope the insurance comes through quickly and smoothly and you are back on the road before too long. Any plans as yet to buy it back, looks like the enging and some of the front end is salvageable.

Truly BUMHATS.
What awful luck - having watched one of mine burn as well, I know the feeling of helplessness that you have - I am happy that you are just about in one piece though!
Sad days...

Oh no Sad pictures mate but look on the bright side, at least you hadnĀ“t got the new axle in and the engine looks saveable. Looks like a good excuse to go out and spend some money! ;D

That's heartbreaking. That car was awesome. I hope the insurance donkeys don't give you any hassle, and you can find the mojo needed to recreate it.

Thats proper curse word...... get straight back in the driving seat though before you get disheartened. Buy another shell and get that cossie shove'd in it, always really liked your mk5.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Engine at least looks re-useable and you and family etc are all ok. Try not to dwell on this and think of a new project to make me green with envy.....
Good luck.

damn thats bad luck.. I had a mk5 do exactly the same thing years ago turned out the metal bit of the tank to filler breather pipe had rotted a pinhole through, and it leaked fuel (or vapour) into the rear q panel, then sat and waited for the inevitable spark... Thats what the insurance report said, anyway. Glad you are ok, petrol fires are scary stuff!

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in
