Noticed someones ebay post showing an ex police T5 estate. Obvioulsy police spec vehicles are usually minus the things like aircon and I assume they come with stellar milages as standard as well as holes in the dash etc for the radio kit.
but...
what advantages do you get (apart from a low price). The seller of the T5 says he "thinks" it's been chipped.
Do the rozzers routinely uprate their cars power and handling?

Years ago I used to think they had uprated motors. Then when I got talking to a few coppers and police mechanics they said they didnt. But now I have been looking for info about the 3.0 vauxhall engines I have been told that senators do have increased power outputs and a lot of people look for those engines for carltons and monza`s. One thing I do remember is Humberside police were once featured in a few car mags 10 years ago (maybe even more) for getting an escort coshworth with a group N suspension set up I think the engine was kept standard.

I believe they have uprated suspension to cope with all the cr@p they carry round, don`t know so much about the engines any more

Three Octavia wagons that shot past me on the hard shoulder of the A2 this morning together...the middle one being unmarked. I'm pretty sure they were all VRSs!

They do tune them, the traffic cars anyway, they just don't like everyone knowing about it. A mate of mine is a police mechanic, he reckons they've got some locely little mods going on

There’s an awful lot of rumours and not many facts about this subject, personally I can’t imagine the rozzers soup up their cars. They buy fast cars, if they weren’t fast enough they’d buy something faster.
Saying that The suspension was defo uprated on old police SD1’s cos you can still buy ‘police spec’ bits for them from Rimmers. I think that was for carrying stuff though rather than any performance benefit.

Police SD1 Vitesses weren't (that highly) tuned, as the Twin Plenum version could outrun them, even with 4 large passengers and a safe in the boot....

Wasn't a traffic cop let off for "testing" his Vectra at 159mph a few weeks ago? They must be tuned!

I have a friend in the police (which is a bit odd considering I'm not altogether keen on the law and I'm a commie and all, but we were friends in school, and he's an alright guy really! ) who assures me that Strathclyde constabulary's motors do get a little tuning to help them keep up with the traffic, plus my grandad had an ex police 3 litre Capri, resprayed red, that was a serious flyer, it had definately been tuned, seeing as it had bigger carbs, had been bored out, (if I remember right) had uprated suspension, that sort of thing. A bit basic inside, but it bloody flew!

Graham Hathaway Racing down here in Essex does a lot of Uprating for Police vehicles. The "Armed response ST200 Mondeos" round here all run on Big Compomotive MO`s ;D They are Chipped and have Uprated Suspension as well.
Its basically so that when they are 3 up with a full compliment of Body armour and weaponry, as well as all the stuff every police car must carry, they can still go as fast if not faster than the standard vehicle, especially with a Police driver on board ;D

if you do buy one then they will of been mantained without a care about cost. All of the Octavia police cars i've seen have been vRSs (1.8T, 180bhp, 140mph top speed) but i did see an ELEGANCE police car the other day - now that could of been a TDi or 1.8T. remember that the 1.8T is the engine from the Audi TT, so can be chipped to 225bhp, and then bigger tubros and such, and the maximum is about 400bhp! Even the TDIs can be moded, 130bhp maximum std, chips to 180bhp possible, bigger turbos and such - quite a lot of power. i always thought that the Police tuned their cars too, I'm not quite sure tho...

i heard they tuned them in the old days but these days theres enough choice of good car to not warrant needing uprated suspension and bigger carbs like they used to.

there used to be an ex police sd1 in crook, but it was written off, apparently it went in for repair before then and was found to have non standard head gaskets, so must have been heavily machined and had an increased compression ratio and as for modern cars , the most i think they will get is a superchip altho I'm unsure if the turbo diesel panda cars will get this treatment!

I'm pretty sure it depends on the Constabulary involved - someone I know has / had (not sure if he still has it...) an ex-Armed response Scorpio Cosworth which is most definitely chipped and tuned.

when i was at santa pod a year ago there were three ex police T5s - all they had had done since they bought them from seperate auctions was fit an air filter/ induction kit - all three ran over 270bhp on the rollers, one was 290 something. (they were running low 15s - very good for a 2 ton car that's a pig to launch) I had a Nissan 200sx, 2 litre turbo, running 1 bar boost (std is 10 lbs) and various other mods, around 250 bhp - i left the lights at full chat once and was slightly shocked to find a police T5 just cruise up next to me while i still had my foot flat to the floor. He charged me £60 and three points to tell me how impressed he was at my start

For us, the differences are normally: (Provided there is a Police package available) 1.Heavy gauge frame (also for taxi) 2.Upgraded brakes (also for taxi) 3.HD suspension (also for taxi) 4.HD trans 5.Column shift (if req'd) 6.HO motor. Whatever it takes to get there. Normally only by special order on Dept letterhead. My Malibu had most of the above ;D 'cept it had a 305 instead of the 350. Same carb and tuning though. Mountain passes were no problem
