e30 325's. which is the best to get? i'm wanting practicality but mainly track day hooligan - age do the tourings handle as well as saloons? also, what the performance difference between 325 and 325 sport? i have a budget of about £500 for reference: coupe 4 door touring

tourings are actually meant to have better weight distibution.
2.5's rock sound good, they drink fuel with your foot down but are quite economical if you drive sensibly.
4pots are slower 318is are really good but they seem to be quite pricey now.
think sports have close ratio gearing mtech "sport" suspension and an LSD
don't consider 320's because they drink like a 325 but lack performance. only consider a 320 if you can get one cheap because a 2.5 slots straight in no hassle and 320's are usually much cheaper than a genuine 325 sport.
id personally get a 4door. i prefer the look of the 2door no end but for a cheap track slag fudge it just get a 4door the savings made can be used to uprate and fix stuff

Fugging hell! Not long ago I’d have eaten a horse sh1t pie before I drove an E30 3 series, but I’m starting to see the appeal! A nice 325 ‘wagon’ must be a very desirable machine. Check out that straight six howwwwwwllllll! YES! COME ON, WORK IT BABY!

I'd choose the Touring version - much rarer, more practical, and IMHO, better looking too :-)

I saw a 325 touring take off once in a Safeways carpark. It had just been smacked into by a Pug 506 doing stoopid speeds in reverse while some little scrote showed off to his mated while his dad was getting some fags.
Waste of a nice beemer

I was following a late, black 325i Touring the other day, blimey it looked Über Cool! I want one... I reckon the advantage of tourings is that they're less likely to have been thrashed by their owners - boy racer types go for the saloons... Disadvantage is that the back will be full of dog hairs/mud off the green wellies etc

I always fancied one, then I drove one and was fairly underwhelmed felt overgeared and made the right noises but it didnt "Feel" like 170hp I need to drive another one to be sure, but I came away thinking Oh B*ll*x because off the back of the drive I had just had, i wouldnt want one..... but I really wanted one IYSWIM ? The expectation did not live up to the reality

with the right diff in the back it changes the whole 325 experience. at the end of the day 170bhp isnt much in a saloon. but i know what you mean to an extent ive driven mine with various ratio diffs in the back and it totally makes or breaks the car.
your welcome to give mine a go to change your mind;)

a colleague was after a 325 touring..... spent ages autotradering only to come up with nedded examples, pristine low-mileage but stupidly priced ones, or automatic ones - i reckon there must have been loads more autos than manuals sold.
so he's looking for an S2 Wagon instead now.

What - an Audi S2? They are lovely cars - abit heavy and inert in the handling department, but really characterful, exclusive & great for cruising. Thirsty buggers though This was a mate's old one... (bit of a rubbish photo i'm afraid) Prefered this to his current 4.2 Quattro A8 Loving the Beemer E30 Tourings too, the're the kind of car that eccentric wealthy people buy from new & then keep forever ;D

In all fairness a budget of £500 is never gonna stretch to a particularly nice example of a 325, and you'll never, ever, ever find a "Sport" at that money.
Problem with alot of them, and especially the wagons is that you have to immediately get cracking on the suspension AND replace the bobbins seats for recaro's to prevent you from falling onto the passenger seat mid-corner.
I know a couple of folk have slated the 320i, but if you were on a tight budget it migh be a better bet.... the world and his wife are after 325's with dreams of "trackday", thus keeping up prices, even for snotters.
Compare that against the fact that a couple of weeks ago I managed to source a mildly scabby but mechanically great 320i four-door with t&t for just £51!!!!. OK, so they're not hugely quick but will still crack a ton-twenty, and you get the glorious six-banger noise.
The £51 chariot is currently on the hands of my bro, who when he's finished rebuilding the wheelarches will be giving it some hard moddage. Stay tuned for further details!

I really like the tourings. As mentioned far more likely to have spent its life in some country gaff and now being sold to make room for a more modern Volvo or somesuch rather than ram raiding off licenses in Brixton!
I guess standard touring are quite lardy so a big heave ho to EVERYTHING behind the drivers seats. ALL the trim, window motors etc would save a huge amount.
then beef up the suspension, wind it down a notch (or two), cage it, big noisey can and it would be tracktastic.
In a similar vein I recon you could trackify a Volvo 850 wagon fairly cheaply and have great fun in a mid 90's BTTC stylee!!

Yes - that's very cool, and given the choice between matching 2dr, 4dr, conv and Touring E30ss all looking like that, I'd want the Touring!
