Hi everyone I recently found this forum via the retro cars magazine am glad its back as have most of the old issues!
My Project is a 1976 Saab 96 that I have has since I was 19. I have changed my plans for it so many times but have now started with this one.
I am planning to fit a V6 engine from a mondeo V6 with an audi gearbox to allow me to fit it longditunally. I have a the front suspension from a mondeo and am planning to fit it in the back, narrowing the subframe to allow for the difference in track.
However the ford V6 I have is in need of a bottom end rebuild and it will be difficult to fit to a audi gearbox. My original plan was to mount it transversly as I have the gearbox and suspension to do that but decided that it would be too wide and not look that great.
So may put an audi V6 or maybe a V8? In! would be tempeted with a turbo 5 pot but will prob be too long.
So far I have made space for the engine by cutting through the bulkhead that was orginally there behind the back seats. Need to get the hole welded up and the subframe modded and in. Plus I need to sort some eccentric top mounts and erm..... learn to weld.
Can't seem to get the pics to show, will keep trying!

Would it make sense to buy a FWD donor car (a SAAB would be cool) and put the entire engine/box/suspension set up in the back of your 96?

Sounds suitably bonkers... Hopefully you can get some photos up and we can see how the project progresses.

A ford V6 of the same family, will bolt up to the gearbox, but as the orginal gearbox was designed for a 2 stroke it won't last very long plus bits are expensive to rebuild it to the spec you would need. Plus there is sod all space in the front! i did persist for awhile trying to figure a way of getting it in there but decide the back would be much better.
I was going to use the whole front set up for the back from a mondeo, thats why i have the subframe and struts etc as well as the V6 and associated gearbox. But since it would require 15cm flares to the back arches i thought that would look abit dodgy so decided to mount the engine longditudually as it will help weight distribution and keeps the track the same although it will require custom driveshafts.
I am getting very tempted to use an audi drivetrain. May look into using its subframe and suspension as well.
Will get a photobucket account sorted so i can post my pics

The one I was talking bout had the front extended that would certainly help as the ones i have seen have had to have the rad in the back or over the engine at the back of the engine bay where the heater motor sits. The downside with the V6 at the front is the extra weight increasing understeer. I would do it that way but think losing the back seats is a reaonable sacrifice! here are my pics so far: My 96 from the front My 96 from the back The engine ;D A look inside where the engine will go, the floor needs to welded up. The metal post in the middle has been removed. The saab steel is difficult to cut! A view looking into the car from the rear boot Will add more pics as i get more done on the car, need to make some decisons!

An idea above sounded like a good idea. Turbo Saab lump from a 900? Keep it in the family. Mid-mounting would make it a tidy handler too.

Stag V8 mounted on a Saab turbo bellhousing. Then two turbos. Been done, works well! (the turbos, can't say about the bellhousing mating up! - nothing's impossible though). Vaguely Saab-related too

Just to add a small update, Have stripped the saab down further now. Has no doors and windows and the rear axle has been removed.
Am almost ready to install the macphearson struts for the rear suspension. Have stripped the front mondeo suspension ready for offering and cutting the rear of the saab up.
First i need to brace the shell as i deffo don't want it twisting!
Will take some photos soon, should really take my camera over!
Am still in a delima about the engine that will be going in. I have a ST24 engine that will prob need a bottom end rebuild. But it is tempting to get a audi V8 and associated gearbox. As i need an audi gearbox or other type of transaxle anyway.
Does anyone want a rear axle from a 96? Or a fuel tank?
Bit of a long shot i guess.

Wow! Looks like I missed this first time around. I fancied the idea of a rear engined Subaru/VW combo in my 95 - as a pipe dream of course. But could a turbo Subaru four go in the middle perhaps? Good luck!

have you considered a saab 900 (old type) engine and box as they are mounted longtitudinaly and you can keep it all saab

Hi it took me ages to find this thread again!
I have been changing my plans loads with this project, after looking into the costs of getting the duratec mated to a audi transaxle I have decided to give that plan a miss.
So I currently have on my driveway a M reg 2.6 V6 audi coupe, I brought it non running for £175, got it running two weeks later. (cam timing was out) and have sold the sought after bumpers and lights £175 so have a free car!
Am planning to cut the front end off this car and weld it into the back of the saab. this method is hopefully the easiest as all the mounting points for suspension will be moved over.
However it is a very tight fit, will need to make new wings as will need to cover an increase of 15cm to the track which I am not happy about.
I am seriously considering putting a front engine bay from another saab 96 in the back this was an orginal plan. This will give me a standard track and double wishbone suspension at the back. but requires expensive custom driveshafts.
At the moment the project is on hold as we have brought a berlingo van for work which needs a new engine. This is taking up all our time.

Glad to know this project is progressing and not fallen into a project black hole of some sort! Good luck with the van, so you can get back on the Saab soon

Have found some pictures of the coupe that I am using the engine from. It now has no bumpers or lights and the interior is completely stripped out, the car has a bad leak and it was very waterlogged and in a bad way! sorry for the blurry pics!

this is going to take some shoe horning! theese are wide ol' V6s!
whilst its out do the cam belt and water pump. the pumps fail, some as early as 60k, breaking the cam belt.
looking forward to seeing this progress, and the 2.6 12v will leave the car ready for a 195hp 2.8 30v!

It should fit ok, access might be a bit tight tho!
Yep thats the plan in the future, a 2.8 V6 either turbo or super charged!
Have spent the day on this berlingo van. If you ever have to change an engine don't. Its a right trial. An Audi or saab is SO much better to work on.

TBH, the slant 4 turbo and original box off a Classic 900 would be the best bet, I think it was on Panic Mechanic where one of the Boardmans stuck the whole subframe into a Fiat Uno. And if it will go in there it will go into an older Saab.
