A chum of mine and I were having a chat as you do and the subject of the Porsche 924 and 944 came up. We scratched our heads and all that for a moment but were unable to come up with a reason why they are so cheap and pretty much unwanted. OK, the 924 is powered by somethig akin to a VW LT van engine which is hardly going to set the world on fire with its performance, but you could swap in any number of decent engines or tune the curse word out of the one thats therehe 944 has the benefit of the propper Porsche engine in it yet doesn;t seem to ilicit much passion at all either in the general car enthusiast population.
I can't bring to mind many modified examples of either. There have been a couple of V8 engine'd 924s I have seen with Rover and Chevy (IIRC) power respectively but other than that I'm at a loss.
It seems quite odd to us, and maybe someone will explain, how come they seem to be dwindling away in the bargain banger sector while people pay silly scene tax to own VWs and other German stuff.
So: they are cheap, RWD, fairly light, have a large engine bay for swapping potential, a pretty rugged german powerplant and drive train as stock, quite an attractive styled coupe and prety much iconic of an era too. So whats not to like?
Or have I been sleepwalking past millions of cool modded 924s and need to be put right on the subject?
Ideas, pics, answers, truth and flames, and photos please...

Early 924 with an Audi 5-cylinder would be rather nice.

I've always liked the idea of a 924 just as a runabout...........There was a really clean red one with half leather white interior, power steering and air con and it just seemed such a neat, attractive little package and reputedly fantastic fun to drive. However - I was speaking to someone who'd owned a 944 (2.5 I think) and his reply was that "it just wasn't much cop at anything". Don't know if that's the general consensus or not. I looked heavily into buying one of these and there's quite a lot of strict servicing things that have to be taken into consideration and cost a fair whack - timing chains, belts, tensioners, the usual fair but it adds an awful lot to the price....... Maybe the badge, potential cost of parts if you're not in 'the know' and suspicion of cheap ones puts people off... I mean the 944s are under 1300kg but sub 200BHP - so not that 'quick' - from the 2.5's or something along those lines. Obviously the much later turbos are very rapid but also command a high price still! ![](http://www.pwr-tech.com/images/projects/Roy944_radiator-lg8.jpg) ![](http://www.broadfootracing.com/TitoWolohan9441.JPG) ![](http://www.autocadre.com/images/photos_voiture/100753.JPG) <rambles> Sorry, been down the pub for lunch so just blathering really ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

The 924 almost made it into the top 5 of under modified cars.. I think I may have to do 6 - 10 as well ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) 924 could be tuned in so many ways!

Absolutely!
There's an SCCA spec series here built around 944 stock-spec racing. A banger class for Porkers!

There's one in our local scrappies at the moment with a full tan leather interior and no-one's taken a single thing off it with the obvious exception of the front badge! Has a BBS bodykit, too...

On the "not much cop" front - neither are a lot of cars people go mad for. I like Capris and all, but a stock 4 pot is a bit cack. Especially the 1.6 puuhlease. But a nice driver if you have no expectations. Or shove a proper motor in it. Also also the mania for all things VW? a FWD shopping trolley or aircooled camper van "better" than a RWD sports coupe?
Y'see where I'm coming from?

That's very true! I should have asked him for a comparison ;D Maybe it just didn't meet his expectations.... I'd still like one but it's just finding one that has all the right bits done and hasn't been abused

My mate had a 944 recently. It was non-turbo. It was dull. Slowish, handled OK and was difficult to find anything exciting about it. And then when it started to go wrong it cost the same as any other Porsche to put right.
When it's head gasket blew I rang round all the local places that do classics and moderns and they all told me they wouldn't touch it.

Maybe to proper Porsche types, the engine's at the wrong end to appeal?

i drove a track prepared 924, poly carb windows some posh leda adjustable suspensiony type stuff, blah blah the usual track/club racer type stuff. bored the living p*ss out of me. engine was pretty soul-less. handled nicely on the leda stuff.
i still want one though minus the engine gearbox and rear end setup.

odd really i drove a mates 944 S2 and it was great! really enjoyed it, i agree its not pant wettingly quick, nor is the handling the best but when has that ever had anything to do with why we love old cars in the first place.
i think they are a good buy, specially the with the audi engine in it

I agree with the sentiments of this thread...... I love Porsche 924's although I've never driven one.... but the idea of owning a cheap RWD Porsche certainly appeals.
Is it not possible to fit an Audi 16v mill? Although a Zetec appeals to me......or maybe a rotary.......

The chap I bought the Mercedes from had just acquired a rather fresh 924 for late 90's Vectra money. It was low mileage, lots of history, very clean and was his daily ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

i got offered a 924 for free when i ended at some random house after a night out, it was white, needed a new rear hatch, there was no engine whatso ever just a head.
didnt have anywhere for it but would of definately took it on if i had.
what about a VW v6 out of a golf or corrado?? pretty sure theres rwd kits for them now or coming soon??
id have either of them, if i got a 944 itd have to be silver, like the one from scarface.

I cant help feeling that this thread was inspired DAVE re showing the Top GEar Porsches for under £1500 programme..........
944 is a bigger version of the 924 really, bodykits and panels can be swopped i believe. The 944 had the worlds largest production 4 cylinder engine at 2.5l iirc. Common problems i have noticed (ive been contemplating getting rid of the polo and buying one for the kudos of saying i own a Porsche lol) Interiors are falling apart on most, the stitching on the seats falls apart, the dashes crack, the electrics fail (mirrors, windows, always sunroofs). Rust is starting to attack wings/valances/and sills on alot of them now.
I say pick up a 924 cheap and see if a 1.8t VAG lump will fit lol then rat it.....
