Used to have a 924s with the 2.5 engine, was cheap to run sold it on before the cam belt and waterpump needed doing. Full cream leather interior, really fun car.
Only ever had to replace the wiper relay which is the same as some VW one and half the price of the porsche equivilent.
And if you like sideways action fit Pirelli P6000's to it ;D

I can't be doing with trying to catch up with this thread so I'll just say that I drove a 944 - about the lowest performance version you can get - and was very impressed. It just felt so nice - although it did feel a bit like you were wearing the windscreen. Ride was super, performance more than enough for most and it all just felt so solid, despite this being an example with over 150k miles under its belt. Granted, I leapt into it after driving a TR7 but in many ways, it felt much like a 928 - but without the crippling complexity (and yes, without the exciting noise also, the only downside really).

Skinnylew - I don't watch TopGear, so no. I think we saw one on the motorway is what sparked it off. Wierd i thought it was mandatory to watch TG lol I obviously watch it too much but they obviously thought the same as you in terms of cheap Porsches, and Clarksons never kept it a secret that he prefers the 944 to any 911 glorified beetle lol Even Tiff Needell was singing the praises of the 944 turbo on a 5th Gear repeat the other day. Got a picture of a wide/bubble arched 924 somewhere.....

I'm sure I've seen Porsche 924 wheels on VWs. I'd assumed early ones had the same PCD or something. Or late one. Cos Audi wheels used to fit Fords too but now don't. If you see the logic.

924 are defo Pug/Ford fitment. 924S ones went 5 stud. You can get adaptors easy enough to be honest, especially for the 5 stud ones. The standard 924 alloys do look a bit like Mk1 Golf Tarantula though so could have got confused.

No defo 4x108, tried a set of Pug 205 and they nearly fit but centre bored was an issue as there were the 1.6 with the solid centre, no removable cap.
Was tempted to try Capri alloys as well as they'd probably suit the RWD layout. Or not.

I think the 924 (early) 944 prices might be due to them delivering the perceived Porsche parts pricing while not delivering the perceived Porsche performance.
If you buy a Capri you probably get what you expect performance-wise. If you don't know much about cars and buy a 924 you might expect something magical and then not get it. A sort of up-market equivalent of buying a car for the baked bean tin extension to the exhaust.
Coupled with that, it's easier (relative here) to get a an uprated engine gearbox axle combo into a typical rwd car than a 924/944 because of the transaxle.
It's a shame in one way that these Porsches weren't branded VWs - not because they should be but because they would make nice quirky VWs, perhaps be embraced by the scene and appreciated for what they are.
Don't get me wrong, the 968 Club Sport and Turbo RS show what's possible - the latter with the old 8V engine but probably at great cost.

Sure they aren't that quick by todays standards, but they are one of the sweetest handling cars you can buy for the money. But then I may be slightly biased having owned one for the last two years!
Taking it to the 'ring next weekend to give it a proper workout. ;D
