Do I have to hate moderns?
I like all cars but can't afford anything more than a 20yr old car.

I just don't like moderns - although their ability to cruise at high speed with minimum effort is nice. That's a huge difference between old Mini and new MINI big thing.

I like the way stupid people buy them for say £10k, make a huge point of telling me they get 54.768mpg apposed to my 32mpg, then sell it 3 years later for £3k and think they've done alright!
Bless em...
Err, other than that i like, err, the current need for manufacturers to stick viper stripes on everything... no wait, i don't...

Depends on the modern. I like the advanced chassis dynamics and aerodynamic design that goes into most cars these days, I like the fact the engines are efficient, and generally more powerful than their retro counterparts at half the fuel bill. I LOVE power steering, I like starting the engines without a big plume of oil smoke pouring out the exhaust, oh, and I like crumple zones... a lot. The strange thing is, one reason I LOVE my car is because it lacks all those things, its a noisy, smoky, slow Ford Escort that will take me with it into the afterlife if I crash it. BRILLIANT

Their engines are great. Pretty powerful for the capacity, reliable (yeah yeah I know there's gonna be one or two with horror stories.... think bigger picture!) and compact. I also love the interiors, and gadgets. which is why my Type3 is going to feature various 'new' gadgets and some seats 20 years younger than the car. Oh and wheels. I love this new thing, which seems to have been started by Renault with the last-gen Laguna, of putting mahoosive wheels on.... 16" steels, 17" alloys on pretty mid-range cars.
TBH the only thing I don't like about new cars is the blandness (which can be avoided if you pay enough and choose something rare), and the price (even for a bland one).

I don't dislike moderns, I just don't like curse word cars lol. I love the fact that manufactures have gone ballistic with the performance figures again. Oh I love Audi RS4's too, good running gear donor in the future.

better lights etc... (upgrades can match it I know but my old Triumph lights are shocking!) better brakes as well TBH - so they'll be adapted and fitted too asap. Fuel economy is the winner though... hands down.
HATE the fact they're all so damn big now! More drivers, more cars, so let's make 'em larger all round - pillocks!

Nods My ideal car would be a 70's body, with a 00's mechanicals (engine, brakes, suspension, steering, the lot) and 90's interior (before they became too plasticky) :-) ovbiously that would be supported by a molten credit card

I like moderns but they have to be unusual, something like the Audi A2 TDI, i like the fact that it does 70mpg, is made entirely out of aluminium, and that its so light it rocks from side to side when the wiper is at its fastest speed ;D I also like the fact that if i crash a modern there is a better chance of not popping my clogs

The only thing I like about a modern is that my missus doesnt give me any grief if were in one and it breaks down. When I'm in one of my older cars and it does it I get the usual lecture about keep buying old cars.

Humm a tough question.
I suppose the main thing is getting in and feeling pretty sure you'll make your destination without having to get oily or crack out the AA card.
I'm not so sure about all this fuel economy tak though. I use a lot of hire cars through work and they all seem pretty thirsty compared to my retros. My Golf would average 44 mpg on a run and even the lardy and thirsty 2.0 16v Pissrat Estate manages 39 mpg on a run. It recent months i've had a selection of TDI's including Vectras and Foci and none managed more than 45mpg which on diesel makes them the same if not more expensive to fuel. The only one that truly did impres sme was a 1.2 petrol Clio I had a while back. This thing had a little turbo and seemed to drop to only 2 pots when idling in traffic (Well it seemed to me that's what it was doing, no idea if it did) The result was an astonishing 49mpg. Not that astonishing you say? Well I had spent the day thrashing it to within and inch of it's life and then got stuck in 2 hrs of stop start traffic. At one point it took me 1 1/2hrs to travel 5 miles. I was truly impressed with that car, it was lively, fun to drive and madly frugal. Pity it's ugly as sin.
Other things I like are the improved build quality and gadgets like satnav (Recent focus I had had excellent factory Satnav), car sound systems have come a long way recently too and most of the moderns I've driven of late would not require any kind of aftermarket speakers or headunit unless you're a real audiophile or want your ears to bleed.
The real downside for me is running costs. Ultra low profile and massive tyres are expensive, parts are very specialised and again very expensive. Not to mention the depreciation which these days seems worse than ever. I really cannot see any reason to buy a brand new car these days unless there is one you really have to have and the money is a drop in the ocean of your finances. I know a few folks who have bought brand new golf GTI's and R32's and I can see why, they are nice. But buying a brand new TDI focus on HP to me seems like the most insane thing you could do in the current economic climate. You might as well take your wages and flush it down the toilet.
Oh and safety, not really my own as I feel comfortable in my car but when the Mrs is with me (and one day our kids if we have any) I feel the need for a little more protection. THe passat isn't bad and feels solid but I do worry anout Mrs Horney when she travels 100's of miles in her 79 mini.

Having just taken delivery of this for the week, I'm struggling to dislike moderns. What I will say, though, is that they're very ignorable. In the Humber and Benz, no matter where I am people want to come and chat about the car/modifications. Then there's the driving experience, which in the Benz is unrivaled - homespun tat rules. The only modern I've ever driven that's evocative enough to get people chatting and make me want take it out just for the sake of taking it out is the Lotus Elise SC.

Oops - forgot to answer your question. Umm, I like the comfort and gadgery. The new S Class is literally staggering. Braking ability in the wet is also pretty impressive.
