interestingly, as an older member I note with interest that some years ago we were having this discussion and saying how we all hated modern rubbish soul-less curse word - like Mk2 Golfs, Carltons, Senators, E30 BMWs, Sierras, SD1s, etc which are all now regarded as cool and retro and superior to today's moderns. Personally I think the cars you've listed above are the perfect mix of modern/retro. I've said this about E30s for a while now. Compared to the earlier E21 they are a lot more modern feeling and easier to drive, but they still have a retro look to them in a certain degree. E30s are as modern as I'll ever need to go. Fantastic cars in my opinion, but I would say that

To summise a few others, its gotta be: -Safety -Economy -And there are a few funky looking NEW cars and features out there -Air con for our few days of summer, though prefer window open. But i'd be sweating if I ever went to buy one. Too complicated, too annoying and unuserfriendly IMO, and big and unconnected, plus bland as hell usually, so it would get modded, but if i ever needed a long distance company car, if it wasnt a decent big solid 'retro' it would be a new un, summat like MINI would be alright for a company car, if anyone was to give us one.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

T'is a fair point AK. Sometimes seems that a car will be in the hate net one week then all of a sudden is an mucho respect hero motor the next!
I'd say that the early Nineties were the cut off for me. By then, the 2CV had gone, the Fiat 126 was well on its way and the Beetle and Mini would only just scrape into the next decade. Proper cars.
But your run of the mill cars were still good and uncomplicated too - I'll offer up the Pug 306 Turbo diesel here (pre-Hdi). Offered everything you needed - comfort, performance, economy, aircon and PAS if you must have it. Still dull though. I loved mine but got totally bored of it. Now I don't own anything that entered production after 1976 and I like that.

After dripping in sweat after parking a 1957 Rover 105s in the centre of Cambridge near a mates flat one summer I vowed to have aircon or power steering.
I now have both plus sometimes 50mpg on run ...alright its only 19 years old so all the classic duffers at shows hate it which makes it even more fun.

I like that fact that they are boringly good at getting me to work and the fact that you don't need to worry about them in the car park. I like the fact that stuff a few years old is so cheap now that it doesn't really matter what happens to it (my current 2000 Escort estate TDi cost £500 with a year's MOT and is in pretty good nick). I like the fact that I can run them into the ground. Most of all, I like the fact that they always make driving the Capri a much more special experience!!!!!!!!!!!

my parents have a black 2003 1.4tdi a2 on 17's - wicked car, love it to bits, they also have a 56 oval, and a 71 baywindow ;D i have a 93 vr6 corrado - 15 years old, retro enough for me and has auto, power steering, air con, and 190 brake under my foot but id love a white audi s3 produced at the moment purely for aesthetic reasons, theyve hit on a lovely grill design, stick some huge bbs's or bentley rims on, colour code, slam and you have perfection

The sound-proofing. The stereo sounds sooooo much better, and you don't have to crank it up 'til your ears bleed.

I suppose you are more likely to get a modern with a tape deck installed as standard. That's quite nice.
Past that, I'm struggling to be honest. Fuel injection is nice, but I like the "manly" feel of a manual choke. I like a bit of soundproofing, but I find most modern cars overdo it. Don't like traction control or ABS. And I don't quite trust airbags for some reason.

Hmmm whole load of reasons - It can live outside and the garage can be home (s) to something more entertaining and that I'm pasionate about - She doesn't grizzle if she has to go "out" in it - suggesting going out in the Monza brings on a whole new world of pain!!! - It has AC that works - It has a big V8 and bloody needs it cos it's a heavy thing - It was 50K plus new and 5K at 6 yrs old and still drives like new (I like modern depreciation) but the best bit is I really don't give a rats about it as long as it starts stops and keeps me dry inside - if it gives me problems I'm likely to whinge about it a lot. (if the Monza gives me problems it's normally an excuse to improve things) So I like Moderns - everything has it's place

I like the fact that in 3 years of ownership since 1 year old my focus has not had a single fault. It's cheap to run (the servicing i leave to a proper grease monkey), good on fuel, fairly nippy, and it handles better than the cast majority of cars out there - and it's meant to be a boring eurobox. I like how i know it will start in the morning, I like how i know i will reach where i'm going without a glitch, i like the safety aspect of it. I like the fact that it has ice cool air con.
And no i'm not in a lease plan, i have no buy back option and i'm not paying company car tax on it ;D. Also I wouldn't think that 50% depreciation is all that bad for the ammount of use it's had.

I love it, only on RR would the inclusion of a standard tape deck class something as "modern" ;D ;D ;D ;D Some time ago I picked up a brochure for the new Accord (for my dad) and was extremely impressed to find that you could replace the standard CD player with a tape deck at a cost of £400 or something. That is exactly the sort of thing I would do and can only have been included for my personal amusement.

hmm. i will do a quick comparison test - firstly between my '92 favorat 1.3 and the girl's '05 almera 1.6 economy: rat 40-45mpg, almera 35-40 costs (tax, insurance) rat £110/yr and group 5, almera £185/yr and group8 (iirc) comfort: rat not a lot! almera more, and with PAS and leccy windows grin factor: rat, MUCH, almera, none price, servicing, depreciation: rat £0, £price of the odd filter, £none/yr; almera, £3-5k, mechanics hourly rates and 3 hours to service basics, £500-1k/yr i think the retro wins this round... and then my '93 525 touring and my uncle's '07 golf r32...(yeah i know but whatever) economy: bm 25-35mpg, r32 25-55mpg costs (tax, insurance): bm £185/yr, golf £lottery winnings comfort: bm lots and lots of sumptuousness, golf, same really grin factor: equal. both have screaming sixes price, servicing, depreciation: i'll not embarrass the VW more than necessary. lets just say the bm wins. i like PAS - on badly balanced/ heavy cars that need it. clios do not need it. new cars are NOT more reliable than older ones, cost more and don't feel as nice to drive. IMO. and they're poorer than late 80s/90s cars in the emissions stakes. so basically, they lose overall. theres so little i like about modern cars that every one i can think of that i like, i want to strip the interior out of and make into a more focussed divers car. maybe i'm wrong and i should focus on the priorities like sat nav that doesn't switch off and traction control for people that cant drive. anyhow.

Like Weighing em in ;D S reg diesel primera went in at 1390 Kgs Nicking bits for me old fords, mainly EFi engines. EFi engines ;D Advanced diesel technology Dislike So called better fuel economy, borrowed me mates T reg passat for a trip to the city, it returned 24.89 MPG and i was driving me mum to hospital so i was giving it the old "driving miss Daisy" routeen Fixing the dam fiddly feckers Paying to fix the dam fiddly feckers How easy it is to do silly MPH without really noticing 70 feels so much faster in me corty than it does in a modern. Feeling disconected from the vehical, i don't do non alchoholic beer either and i don't shmoke cigerettes

Likes: comfort, EFI, relative reliability, less likelihood of being squashed in an accident. Heater/demisters that work. Some of them look good. Parts availability.
Dislikes: Boring ZzZzZz, excess weight, feeling of disconnection from the road, airbags, feeling of going slowly. Complexity, difficulty of working on them/expense of paying someone to work on them. Cambelts. Lack of visibility. Expensive and depreciate. No classic insurance. High road taxes.
Economy is not really a huge issue- the Imp does 42.5mpg when thrashed, and 50mpg on a (slow) motorway run.
