Here’s my show report on the NASC "Neil’s Nationals" at Drayton Manor. First statement: it was damn hot. Its kinda like the pod in that there’s no shelter. So the sun just beats on down. The hot sunny weather certainly brought the cars out. I reckon there must have been at least twice the number there this year that there were last year. One unfortunate incident, and not helped by the very bright sunlight was that a certain someone had messed with all his camera settings for some low-light indoor shooting last, and forgot to put them back to defaults before going to Drayton so about half of the 350 photos I took were unusable. Of the remainder most were “a bit curse word” to say the least. For those of you on slow speed connections go put the kettle on as there are about 100 following on here…
Start with an Austin which should need no introduction here…
Lovely Ford pickemup
There was a line of rat rods which parked away from everybody else. Too cool to be with the shiny cars or was someone worried about the rust being infectious?
’59 Bel Air seems to get everywhere on everybody’s event photos, so here it is again.
I had a poster of Mr Torquer on my bedroom wall when I was about 13. No, that’s not some daytime TV exercise dude, that’s this very 80s pro-street Fordson van. Don’t ever change, baby…
This A35 made me think of Seth. Sorry Seth.
Loved this Minor, but not so sure about the Mural. BTW, are they coming back or what?
This roadster was a delight. Not much more I can say other than it’s a delight.
Blimey, pro-street really isn’t dead. Good. This Cortina has all the hallmarks of the more acceptable face of Pro-street. Full stock trim and splash or rip graphics in a lurid contrasting colour. Serious tubs and front runners. Job done. Lets just not do that whole colour coded pastel thing again eh?
Bone shaker baby
Parked up later
Isabel loved this. Well I told her she did. She was actually more into pulling faces at people and having some kind of fit with excitement when the supercharged outlaw fired up. That’s my girl.
CC feature Mk3 is subtle. Works well.
Supercharged Pop gets about too.
PT Cruisers out in force again. What is it with these things?
Nice family rod. So I kept telling Em. We need a Tudor.
Mopar muscle just how is should be. No dappy frills or silliness. I think this is Alex’s ride from MMA.
Loved the Farina. Followed a stocker the other day (photos in spotted thread when I get time) and it reminded me how much I like these and how I haven’t yet managed to own one. This must be remedied.
I’m really not sure what to say about this one, other than that lowering it mustn’t have been too much of a challenge LOL. Anyone know it, there must be a story there, right?
Why am I thinking of Cooter, the mechanic guy from Dukes of Hazard?
Anyone else always want a Tamiya remote control Vanesa’s Lunchbox or similar? I think this guy must have. Yo!
Nowt wrong with this is there. Lovely.
V8 Cortina. Spot on there that chap. Well done.
The other Suburban, no bored housewives though.
Now this guy has one coooool ride. ’57 Desoto Kustom with a bit of a Watson feel there Holmes. Sadly I didn’t get any decent photos of it. So “enjoy” some of my less crappy ones.
Pretty trad resto rod
This will have some fans on here….
Pearly Spencer
What I would have killed for when I was a 8 year old.
Dogs danglies HB
This looks somehow familiar. I’d love to see a build thread on it on a webforum….
But what are the chances, eh?
This is just cheeky. No idea what’s under the hood, but the rear wheels suggest something good.
Pro touring or New Millenium Custom. You decide.
Muscle coming in.
Nice family ride
Slickest pickup yet?
Real? Kit? I’ve given up caring. I like.
This Pop’s about perfect for me.
Love the Minor van. Just right. The definition of “just enough”. Wouldn’t be expensive to pull off either, so no excuses anyone. You just need a sense of taste and proportion not a hod of cash.
Willys appears to have an erection
Some familiar favourites, inc that AWEZUMZ Humber.
Sweet ride, reminds me of a certain Somerset project…. Perhaps? Hmmm?
Horn.
Horn x2
Odd but likeable
This was delightful. Seen before but still makes me drool.
Ditto the Nova.
Thor’s VW truck with Chevy V8 power. Didn’t see Thor about though.
Rams horns give me the horn
More random photo goodies:
Redneck style Oldsmobile was a real hit with me. YAH!
This HC is just so tidy it works so well. Nothing OTT, just “rightness”.
And one with a RV8 and slots. Nice. Which to chose?
Cool Galaxie cruiser.
Earlier and equally cool Furd
Best use of contrasting primer of the show?
60s GM products both, but very different. Chose between them? Hard… I love Buicks and that’s a 430 equipped Wildcat. Gets better every time I see it too. I think its changed ownership.
even if it does have too many doors. Still: mo do's fo mo ho's, as they say in the ghetto.
Forget pro-anything, this is how I like my first gen F bodies.
I think I just found a new favourite pickup
A little known Farina styled Consul concept
I had one like this, but ropier.
This photo could have so many captions, but all the ones I came up with were kinda uncomplimentary about the lady sitting on the grass there and she might be someone one here’s mum or something so I’ll let you make your own up in your heads.
Straight off the pages of Street Machine magazine in the early 90s?
This is wrong on so many levels.
Ranchero – is it a vehicle for art or a form of art in itself? Find out on the South Bank Show tonight at 11.
I’m getting the feeling for late model muscle. An LS1 and no rust. What’s not to like? Well, except the front spoiler jobbie, if it were mine that wouldn’t be on there, but hmmmm….
Couple of “our” kind of cars, right?
I could perhaps airbrush the skinny sweaty guy getting’ a lil lovin’ with his lass from this photo, but sadly nothing could airbrush it from my mind…
Can never see one of these without wanting to see it pop a wheelie…
This little Austin is cute, and has the look of being a “recovering” 80s rod. Check out what’s going on around the lights in the fenders…
Cack is the new black. Soon every dubber will have a middle aged lady throwing shapes in the bed of their ride. Its "Great for '08 dude." Pump up that Mantovani and get the ride a rockin.
Nother lovely Buick. Toss those wheels though. Are they off a Suzuki Samurai thing?
Paint it. Paint it now, or I will break in to your garage and you’ll wake up one morning and it will be shiny and red.
Ten million Akku points for this one though. Just as is. Chugaboom got NARSTY.
Big feckin blower. YAH.
Not HARRY POTTER RWD DRIFT JDM Life on Mars AE86
This car used to get painted about twice a season back in the day. I remember a caption in Rod & Custom or some such mag which read “what colour next for the ugly Olds?” It seems to have been the “Pro-38” paint scheme for a long time though. Since the mid 90s by the style of it I’d say. Been up for sale a couple of times I think too. I like it, but I think I’d paint it again…
hot red rods (oo-er!)
Not sure if I'd preffer this with 3x2s rather than the huffer and butterfly scoop.
What you can’t see is that there is a very small Adolf Hitler in the bed of that white pickup.
I need those horns for my Caddy apparently. Erm, I think they look better on the dayvan than they would on mine.
THAT Cortina.
again, and why not?
Clean muscle
Sit up & begs. Nice to see the rare early front end on a rod
This one really works for a "modern style" IMO
Muriel's wedding
Sort-of NATO style P100
I jave a thing for Buicks. And this one was extra nice.
It’s the Little and Large show
Club banner
Time for T? Don’t mind if I do. The observant will spot Pinball Wizard alongside. Sadly none of my photos of it were any good.
Prostreet Chevy looks like a real racer not a colour coded wannabe
This Minor does the rounds. Naughty little thing. Lovely.
Nice to see this Prefect with the early front as well. Much tidier tan the bulbous one which was more common.
s'pose we have to have a bug in the thread.
Well, there we have it. Sadly I didn’t have time or effort in me to caption everything. So just imagine something really cool, well informed and devastatingly witty for those and imagine I said it.
I did see several forum members cars but didn't put the photos here because I hate you all.
No really because the photos were shockingly bad...
Start with an Austin which should need no introduction here…
