Just for now I've used one of those coil clamp sets to clamp two coils together on each side to drop the front a bit. Looks a bit better and drives fine, not had a chance to take a photo yet, when I do I'll be able to compare before and after shots to ascertain how much it's dropped (forgot to measure before and after ). Frank, rolling the rear arches is on the cards for when I get the front wings done and the car re-sprayed. I've also got some 'uprated' rear shocks on the way which may raise the rear a tad and should stop some of the bottoming out too. Still thinking about the black bonnet, the paint's all blistered, peeling and drab anyway so there's nowt to lose really. The tyres are 185-70-13, and on those rims that's as wide as I can go. In fact, with sagging soft springs and non-rolled rear arches 175s would probably have been better, but they would not have filled the arches so well . I didn't even need any spacers!

I may go for a black bonnet for now though...........................decisions, decisions.... The coil clamps seem to have done the trick too Before: After:

Yep, I'm well happy with it, total cost of the wheels/tyres/lowering = a fraction over £100. The 'uprated' rear shocks are setting me back a few more quid but should be well worth it. I've also got some GT strut inserts en route for the front.

These arrived today - the coils should 'assist' the weak standard leaf springs. Have to wait till next weekend before I can fit them though.

Where did you get those from?Matt eBay, not exactly cheap. They're designed to assist tired standard springs and/or for when towing. I'm hoping they'll raise the rear a fraction and firm it up a lot! I know a few women that'd like to do that too!

Ok, I've now got some Hunter GT strut inserts for the front and some nos struts for them to sit in. Now I just need to get some new front discs and then find time to change over the struts, dampers etc. May chop a coil off the front springs or just stick with the clamps - depends on the 'shape' of the coil ends. Also, I've removed the badge bar and put the badges on the grille. I've also fitted some genuine nos Chrysler spot-lamp brackets on the front ready for some spots but I need to fine tune their position before I can add the lamps. Still planning on a satin black bonnet in-keeping with the late 60's club rally car look.

Not much change other than I now have got the centre caps sorted with some nice singer Vogue badges. Also have one on the centre of the steering wheel boss. My Dad is making up a spacer so I can use my genuine mid 60s Motolita leather/alloy steering wheel, it all fits, just needs to come away from the dash an inch or so. Photos to follow. Here are the wheel centres: (picture quality not brilliant I'm afraid)

For those who weren't aware the early Motolita wheels had a smaller pcd for the 9 fixing bolts. They changed to the larger pcd in the 70s to enable people to mix and match with other makes who were all using the same larger pcd.

Holbay also had tubular pushrods instead of solid ones to save weight on the valve train and used a different crank to the standard alloy head motor,
obviously using a alloy head on this motor is only feasible if it already has an alloy head unless you change the cam as well as the cast iron headed cam and the alloy one have a different valve layout !!!

The Singer has an alloy head as standard. I probably won't bother with a Holbay set up unless one comes up cheap although an alloy Holbay cam cover would be nice ). I'll just go for twin carbs or bike carbs at some point with some head work perhaps.

Madge has been running rough recently, I thought it was the timing so had a friend zap it with his timing light, it was way out but when corrected we realised it was actually running on 3 cylinders. No1 wasn't firing it seemed, lacking the right tools we assumed it needed new plugs as there was a spark at the lead. So, got her home and changed the plug with a known good one - still not firing, oh dear Got fuel, got spark so that leaves compression? Did a compression test yesterday, no1 only has about 50 psi, the other three had 140-150 psi. BUM! So it's either head gasket, rings, valves or a holed piston When I get a chance later this weekend I'll re-do the comp test on no1 with a drop of oil in the cylinder to check if it's rings. We'll see.........either way it's a minimum of a head-off job PISTON BROKE? ME TOO! ;D
