Well, work commitments, weather etc have conspired to prevent me from doing anything until today. I managed to get the head off before the rain came. I've got most of the bits to build a Holbay-ish engine now (including a Holbay Rocker cover). All the bits are bolt-on and can be done any time, probably the same time as upgrading the brakes and suspension.
So, while the head is off I think I'll see about getting it ported etc. I could drop the spare one from Matt on but to be honest it's an unknown quantity and looks very grubby compared to the original and I don't want to be doing another head swap anytime soon. Plus I only have access to basic tools at the moment and am working in a car park.

Took the head and the spare to dennis at Transimp today. My head is fubarred so he's going to use the spare as a basis and build me what will effectively be a fast road type head. He also thinks the No 1 cylinder problem may be piston related. I'm going to fit the head he's building and see what happens. If the problem is still there it must be the piston in which case I'll take the whole car to him and get him to sort the bottom end too.

Very nice indeed, bet your looking forward to having it running with them Although would go even better on the Imp, bwahaha Must say, loving the car though bud, been having a thing for the Rootes 'Arrow' cars of late, especialy the Hunter based cars, nice and practical.

Well, the head's away getting done as we type. I've got the Holbay exhaust manifold as well so eventually she should have a similar, if not better, output to the original holbay engined cars. I also have the suspension and brake upgrades waiting in the wings plus the Dunlop D1a alloys waiting to be refurbed. I tend to do things piecemeal so it could be a long time before it's all done - got to get the body sorted and painted too!

the holbay engine also had different rockers (slightly longer) flat top pistons (which your engine might have if its a HC version) obviously you kjnow the other differences, smaller combustion chambers bigger valves, cam etc we fitted a set of these to a hunter engine with the AM2 head casting though and with just the flat tops and the standard cam it transformed it overnight...

thought i would add we ran the dizzy vaccumn off no3 cylinder (no real reason apart fromit looked like the manifold was cast to be tapped there) gave up trying to get a smooth idle and found out the carbs would only run well with the original airbox and pancake filter (end of a ong tube attatched to the fibreglass airbox that covered the back of the carbs) also the proper dizzy for the webers had no vaccumn on it just weights, there is a couple on ebay at the mo though so its worth trying for the right bits

Long time no update. Madge is currently sorned and out of MOT looking very sorry for herself with flat tyres etc. However, the new head is ready and as soon as I've sorted some issues on the Imp I will endeavour to get her running again, initially with the standard carb and exhaust set-up. Looks like I've sourced a stainless exhaust system for her which I'll mate to the Holbay manifold. Then I'll play with suspension and carburation.
Eventually I'll get the rot repaired and a respray in the original colour. Possible house/flat purchase later this year may put paid to that though.

No real progress apart from collecting the head. I'll try to fit it before any house move in an attempt to avoid hiring a trailer. The house I was gazumped on did fall through but I'm hopefully exchanging contracts very soon on a better one. Will have to build a garage at the new house though.

Quick update. Still no further forward as too much else on at the moment. Madge now resides in the back garden of my new house awaiting the building of a garage. Realistically that won't be until some time in the New Year.
