say hello to my new shop truck- a '78 mazda b1800 that was minitrucked back in '93/'94, driven for a year, and has sat in a barn since. I pretty pleased with it for what I paid, its lowered all round (2" blocks and possibly some leaves removed on the back, and chopped springs up front), it has some alloys that on first glance want weighing in, but they're 7x15 neg12ET, so I think I can do something with them , huntmaster buckets(which will probably be going), mountney wheel, really good quality tonneu cover, leccy fuel pump, ford essex v6 with autobox, and a questionable fornt bumper/spoiler(with I think may be aftermarket for a bmw?). it also has a rather large hole in the bonent form where it used to run a blown v8!! its also damn solid for a '70s builders truck!!! the list of problems that need sorting to get it on the road are- doors have no way of opening from the exterior- MOT fail- I need to buy and fit a door popper kit. it has no external mirrors- I need at least one for MOT the brakes are sticking. its just about pushable with 3 people, but they need a strip down and service. it needs some wiring work- everything is on flickswitches on an ally panel, inc. seperate ones for ignition, starter motor, fuel pump and fan, which I don't like, so itll be going back on a ignition key. the gearbox oil cooler pipes need fitting motor needs a general service and the carb cleaning out cos it wont idle. battery needs strapping down- MOT fail side windows have very dark purple tint- MOT fail- ive scraped some of it off just need to finish it off. needs some rear tyres. that lot should see it just about legal, then the fun can begin

Lots of potential there "battery needs strapping down- MOT fail" This actually isn't an MOT fail, the battery on my Allegro was secured rather badly with rope and I got an advisory for it Even if it's not secured at all it's not a fail, but you want it strapped down anyway for obvious reasons.

I must say, I do like the styling of these trucks, agree the front valance is very questionable though. Whats going on with that panelling in the engine bay?

Love it! Awesomezness! i'd just redo it in this pink. Essex's have potential for horses too.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

no, it will not be staying pink!!! when it stopped raining yesterday afternoon, i gave it a nose job- i decided i just couldnt live with that 'dubious' fiberglass bumper/spoiler effort. ile have to fab a new lower valance to fill the gap. but thats not hard. stock grille will be going back on one its been repainted. the lower corners of the wings are good and jsut need a couple of screw holes welding up, and a bit fo excess filler grinding off. i also removed all the pointless ally sheeting form the engine bay. I'm not sure what whoever fitted it was thinking, as it wasnt hiding anything and just made it hard to work on the engine. ive got it up on the ramps now to cheak out the condition of everything underneath, I'm pretty sure everything is solid but i wonna check the gearbox mounts and stuff are good.

Now that's what I call potential! Great looking trucks IMHO.
Might be worth checking an MoT tester's manual, there was a dispensation for modified vehicles not having any means of opening the doors from the outside (loophole might have been closed now though).
Anyway, top find!

You've got to have a means of opening the door from the outside, though some testers will put it through.

Anyway, top find! you used to be able to present for mot with windows wound down so you can use the internal handle, but this loophole was closed fairly recently, so I have to fit some remote control poppers. I can get a kit to do this for about £25 though, so above all else its worth it so you don't have the pain in the ass of having to reach in through the 1/4 light! update in a bit once ive taken some pics

we now have pics. whats all this then? its the v6 and autobox sitting on my drive, thats what it is its looking good in the engine bay, ive still not found any rust, ive got to cut off all the old bracketry and clean up the chassis rails next, I might reweld some bits of the crossmember too cos I can do better than whats on there now. I might even go the whole way and do all the inner arches and stuff too. (clean up, welded up any extra holes, grind back and paint). and ive got this to clean before fitting- rover v8, 3.5L, 9.35:1 CR, offenhauser manifold, holley carb, mallory dizzy, range rover p38 stainless manifolds, billet pulleys and alternator bracketry, lightened flywheel. and then this on the back of it- LT77 5 speed manaul gearbox. it will be about 210-ish HP, thats 90hp more than the v6, and much more fun with a manual box

thats cool! glad its not staying pink!
your realy making fast progress with this!
your new engine will probably be around 100-120hp more than an essex; the ports are dreadful out of the factory; open them out to the same size as the gasket to acheive the power output claimed!

I'm not hanging about cos as soon as this is on the road i can sell 2 of my other cars to get me some space and cash. i can see 4 colours that would work on this, gloss black (totally impractical and i don't think i could get it straight enough), gloss off-white, satin dark grey or satin dark blue. I'm favouring grey at the minute. as for the 'look' of the truck, I'm going to either go for a hot rod influenced style, like a lot of american pickups, following on form where minitrucking started (the street rod scene). or go totally the other way and go for jdm race-inspired bosoku style. i think this look will work best - wide rims, stretched tyres, oil cooler on the front, lowback buckets, etc, maybe even arch flares. it should work well with it being a japanese truck.
i think the motor will give a honest 200hp which is great for such a light motor- it weighs considerably less than the essex ive hoiked out, which can only improve the handling. i think the rear axle will be ok with that power output too, so that can stay on.

Great that you got this one, good work so far. IIRC Hot Car had a project based on one of these, got fitted with a turbo and IMSA-style body mod’s. I bet Rmad can remember.
Has V8Mike still got his? Haven’t seen him on here recently.
