Brought this home yesterday... But now I'm worried.......Gearchange is a nightmare, locks are useless, brakes gonna take a bit of getting used to ....Theres no way the wife could use it with the brakes as the are, need to get a servo on it asap. Now I'm wondering if I'm just being a tit, thinking that a 42yo motor can do dailly duties...... And, I just relised the MOT is up today and not 4 wks like the guy told me, (I should have checked the paperwork.....)... Car has to live on the street, so I need to concentrate and get the jobs done. I had it put thro an MOT before I bought it, failed on a couple of minor things so hopefully I can get them done tonight and get it booked in... Wish me luck ! Cheers Ger

Good luck!
Are you sure it's not just the old brakes you're not used to? You have to really stand on mine but it does pull up.

Well it looks good. My brakes are servo assisted and are fine so a worthwhile upgrade, ive heard with the earlier ones are a bit heavy. Whats your problem with the gear change?

Gearchange feels like a spoon in a bucket of mud........!
1-4 are OK, (although it feels like a mile between the gears...Reverse is a bit hit and miss, can't really feel where it should be going, and its somewhere in the middle of the passenger footwell....
The boys on the volvo forum suggest it may be something as simple as a bushing, but I've not been able to find out which one yet.
What servo did you use Archieboy? I stuck a lockheed remote on my Y, one of them do the job? Johnny, Brakes do pull the car up, but the pedal is totally dead, its like pressing down on a brick!
Cheers, Gerry

Hi Loon, Thanks for your confirmation on the state of my sanity !! Disks on front, probably 10 year old fluid......I'll flush it thro. Its now parked on a neighbours driveway till I get the bits for my horn so I can get it MOT'd. Went out for a run around the local area tonight, feeling a tiny bit better about the situation, hopefully all will be well after the MOT on Friday! Cheers Gerry

If your fluid is ten years old, that might be the issue with sloshy brakes mate

I saw someone selling new Lockheed servos on Ebay recently for about £70 cheap cheap. Make sure the big pistons in your calipers aren't seized come to think of it check the small ones to but especially the biguns.

I'll get it sorted and legal first. Stopping a little better, then lowered a little, then maybe some nice wheels......

So I take it it's a 121 then?
Sounds like your M40 linkage is knackered, mine has a very light and precise change.
Does yours have the Schafer master cylinder? If these are buggered then they're very hard to get hold of (all most places sell are repair kits).
The brakes take time to get used to from a modern, but once you're accustomed they're actually pretty easy to modulate. Yours don't sound right to me, cos I started driving mine from a Citroen C4 as a daily (possibly one of the most overservoed modern cars eVah...because despite having hydraulic brakes they have to take your head off cos it's a Citroen innit?) and when I first tried it I had to lean on them pretty hard.....but then again I'm 15 stone so I got used to it.
Looks nice and straight though. Best o luck.

Hi Mischab18a, Its a 122s......I have a new(old) top coming for the gearbox from Tony Barrett, the bit where the ball of the gearstick sits, Tony reckons the most likley reason for the curse word change is a worn socket.
How do I know if I have a Schafer clyinder??
Cheers GERRY

Normally 'Schaefer' (can't do the umlaut on this keyboard) is stamped on the master cylinder itself.
If memory serves that's near the bulkhead on the LHS.
If I can get to the car at some point I'll try and get a picture.
I thought I knew my Amazon history. If its a '66 122S, I thought they had servoes by then. Or it might have been '67 when they became standard fitment. Or perhaps I'm talking curse word.

Estates had servos as standard by '67 but not sure about saloons. Mine had one when new but it was removed years ago (never bothered to get another as it's one more thing to go wrong imho), but then I rarely, if ever, drive cars with servos. The brakes are heavy but they still pull the car up very well. However if your other car has a servo, then I think it's worth fitting one to the Amazon.
On B18s, both brake & clutch master cylinders are on the bulkhead, directly operated by the pedals. Not sure of the different types, but when mine was replaced a few years ago, it wasn't expensive.
On factory B20s, the brakes are dual circuit & the brake master cylinder is fitted directly behind the servo on the left hand side (RHD cars use a crossover bar to operate it). Also, the clutch is cable operated
