It's really sad. On the other hand, maybe "tony" and his cronies will step in with a loan - depending on whether they think it'd get them more votes It has been on the cards for ages though. Why can't we build mass-produced cars successfully in this country?! The Germans do!

Its a great pity as I always thought Rover cars were quite interesting - would never consider buying one though. I did notice a lot of new MG's around over the last two years though - all driven by young people - so thats somethingh that should be examined by the vultures

I feel sorry for the people who work for them and also for the name Rover, but in some ways I think its better for them to go this way than to be bought out by a Chinese company and in a couple of years time swap the manufacturing base to china and just try to cash in on the rover name. The sad thing is Rover have been making better cars with better engines now than they have done for 20 year.

rovers problem is/was that there range hadn't been seriousily updated since about 1994!!!
how exactly fell for the MG ZR trick? a re-badged, facelifted, facelifted Rover 200, with an ancient engine, horrible plastic interior and a pipe and slippers as standard!

Since 2000, when BMW dispensed with Rover, it has only launched two completely new models: the slow-selling CityRover, a sub-standard supermini based on the Indian-built Tata Indica, and the MG SV, a low volume, carbonfibre-bodied attempt at a supercar of which fewer than 50 have been sold.
lol- they were popular then...

It`s still a very sad day - 6,000 jobs at Rover + approx 20,000 at their suppliers They were never going to get any help from this car hating government though

My Father's just bought a 2 year old 75, fully loaded it is and a splendid car, BMW engined as well aparently. How can a company that produces such a good car be in such a poor state?
Maybe the smaller cars and that odd City Rover (Yuk and double yuk) bring it down. They just don't compere with anything from anyone else.

Maybe because apart from showboating MG rehashes the directors had no real plan for the companys long term survival. Unless you count lining your own pockets with workers pension money a plan that is!

when phoenix bought the remains after BMW had picked it of all the interesting stuff, it had basically been turned back 10 years - their entire model range was from the mid-90's with a few bolt-on extras.
sad thing is the cars are quite funky - i like the idea that you can 'tart up' the cars from the factory with better cams and induction kits and so on, they are really trying hard to appeal to younger buyers but the marketing stinks and under it all it's still a rover 200, which i'm fairly sure still shares some technology with a maestro....

It has been on the cards for ages though. Why can't we build mass-produced cars successfully in this country?! The Germans do! We can - and we do, only we build cars for foreign companies. I believe Nissan Primeras and Micras are built here as are many Peugeots. What annoys me is that our goverment (no matter who is in charge) Doesn't seem to understand that the measure of a countries wealth is in the products we manufacture and export. I fear that we are sitting on an economic time-bomb if we keep turning into a country whos industries are based primarily in service & retail Even our automotive research and design industry, which used to be our specialality seems to be going to the wall too, e.g; there are rumours that Cosworth Technology (owned by Audi) are thinking of moving operations to Germany because of the costs of running a business here

Damn right!
In the 80's thatcher told us that manufacturing was not important as we would become a service industry
Then in the late 90's all the service industries started to relocate to India and Tony told us that our creativity would mean that all the ideas were generated here.
Now apart from being insulting to the rest of the world, who can be just as creative, we find that a lot of design, both industrial, engineering and in my field publishing, is moving overeas too.
So what does that leave us with exactly?
Even that most "market driven" countries the US knows you have to protect your manufacturing (see Bush and steel tarifs).
Unless it's built and owned here, it aint "ours"

As regards govbernment bailout, the government is limited in what it can do by the eu. bailouts per se atre illegal. they can offer loans but they must be repaid within a set limit.
As was said earlier i think SAIC or other interested parties let them go to the wall to avoid having to meet pension liabilities. Now they can get the mg name on the cheap
