Great car, and a very interesting read If it's any help for the bellhousing repair, I think that I have an installation drawing somewhere for one of those gearboxes. Let me know & I'll try to dig it out

So I attempted to crack on again with the LC Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards It currently looks like this - with no eligable car for Billing VBOA I spent Sat ripping it to bits Complete front end refurbishment was long overdue - however I was very surprised to find the strut top washers intact and the oil cooler leak I thought I had is actually the hard link pipe that has thined out and is weeping..... I haven't touched it since 2010 (tax ran out in early 2008 when it had a broken clutch/bell housing) other to move it in and out of storage but nothing motivates me more than a deadline so I'd better crack on with it and for once aside from killing my back on the first day it's playing nice!!!! Obviously Billing wasn't the target but RRG2013 was......... In advance for all readers I failed so the next couple of pages cover where I worked every spare hour I had and went with pretty much zero sleep for 5 weeks in the run up to RRG - highs and lows lots of them I didn't post on here as I genuinely thought I could meet the deadline and I wanted it to be a surprise at RRG

Catching up with pictures BMW parts chaser loaded up Hmmm obviously spare and not used on 949 Two for RB Measurements to follow Tonight I was mainly using Jizer and a jet wash - too dark to take pictures by the time I finished - front wheel arches are nearly clean enough now Couple of rust patches where the seam sealer had been compromised need attention from a zip wheel I forgot to take of the caliper mounting plates and without anything to anchor them too I had to improvise on their removal but they are all apart now and ready to get blasted and powder coated Shocks have had damper tubes covered in coolant hose and then duct tape - they are being dropped off tommorrow for balsting and hot zinc spray galvanising, I'll wet paint them rather than subject them to powder coat and oven - I had the front legs of my Monza done this way years ago and despite having all the paint blasted off by stone chips there is still no rust showing on them so for the shock bodies I'm going that way again

These threads normally go the same way - had a few bits shot blasted and powder coated They are pretty dust as they were done a day early (unheard off) and left in paint shop while they did some silver wheels!!! Springs (SB & PC) Shocks (SB and Hot zinc galvanised spray as the seals don't like the oven involved in PC process) Subframe - I already had one ready done (5yrs ago) but I did the one I removed (anyone need a powdercoated LC sub frame?) Roll Bar (SB & PC) Suspension top hat and plate (SB and PC) Roll Bar rubber mounts (SB & PC) Engine mount stop (SB & PC) Lifting Eye (SB and PC) All picked up today - 5 day turnaround So this week while I've been waiting I've been treating surface rust and waxoiling chassis legs as well as using shultz and stone chip spay before finally covering it all in chassis black Brakes are fighting me a bit as it seems the pistons are reluctant to leave home - one caliper done after a lot of effort but the other is proving to put up a damn good fight Tommorrow must remember to take some pics of it all before I start putting it back together Then I can turn it round and start ripping apart the rear end....... Oh and because they were black and last time I used them I tried to reverse up and over them (dark and curse word eyesight) I decided a brighter colour would be a good idea The merc nearly made it too

Tonight I managed to remove the fixed steel pipe that runs across the front of the car between the oil coolers - it took two of us to undo and remove - damn those unions were tight - it's rusted thro and was weeping - thank the lord it wasn't the oil coolers leaking - so Pirteck are making me a new one tommorrow (or today actually)
Found my GSI 24V brake ducts so modified to fit LC and then rubbed down and repainted
Hubs de-rusted and primed - top coat tommorrow and then refit Wednesday hopefully
Front calipers now un-siezed pistons and removed from car - old MS pistons are all out and calipers are soaking in Jizer ready for cleaning and rebuild
Pads are toast - brake material was falling away from the backing plate (leaving a car sitting around is never a good idea)
I'm honestly not sure if the list is getting longer or shorter (I'm aware I want to do the same job on the rear end too)
I'm also trying to rack my brains and remember if I can strip the rear end off and remove the bearing hub assembly without pulling the shaft out of the bearing - something tells me I can but years of working on Monzas where you definately can't says I'm being a pratt

Car other way round (rather than other way up - which on reflection would make life easier)
Father Ted in the air
BTB Stainless Exhaust off
Prop disconnected - have the bruises to prove it
Drive shaft bolt losening in progress (I'll leave them attached to the diff no point disturbing both ends) while I still have a working hand brake (been there, done that, sent the post card etc)
Oh curse word I spy with my little eye something begining with H..........
Clue - There's a hole in my bucket dear Liza - A hole in my bucket indeed
Sweep is open to guess where it is!!!! No repeat guesses so if someone has suggested it you can't say the same suggestion.....
No prizes but a virtual beer for who gets it right

I wonder if I've been in this car? A neighbours son used to work at Hethel and would borrow cars on a regular basis and come and pick me up. I would be around 15/16 ish I guess. Anyway, he took me out once in a pre production Lotus test mule....it was rusty around the bonnet badge and had a roll cage. That was all I remember really.....apart from my door coming open at 120mph down the Bungay Bypass....

The pre prod prototypes all got scrapped but someone made a complete car out of them many years ago

Good going Ian. Would that spare subframe take a GSI 24V engine?
Must get started on my 24v Diplomat project!

So round early Aug
Tonight I found another hole  This one is an MOT failure so once the rear end is out, the bumper and the side skirt removed I'm going to be welding and using a zip wheel and undersealing!!!! Some clues there.
Tonight I've been mainly breaking tools
Drive shaft bolts are all out
Agregate score (LC - 1 - Tool box casulaties - 3)
Diff Mount bolts out
Handbrake disconnected
Rear Calipers off
Rear discs off and handbrake striped down
Rear shock air lines disconnected
Shock lower Bolts loosened (LC - Nil - 22mm 1/2 Socket - 1)
ABS sensor brackets removed from Diff (LC - 1 - ABS Bracket Diff Bolt - Nil)
Tommorrow I'm going to be in Halfrauds at lunch attempting to get a profesional tool replaced FOC and purchasing a replacement Inch to 1/2 drive adaptors and a 22mm Socket
I know no pictures it never happened but I'm on a deadline and slipping behind!!!

So I need to remove the stub axles - A friend in the ABS did a "how too" but also gave me some advice and linked me up to it "You don't want to be replacing the bearings unless you really, really, absolutely, really have too ! I have my tooling back now which may help you, should you decide to punish yourself." Guide (of sorts) here www.lotuscarlton.co.uk/rbearings.htmThey actually came out easily without a fight - the bearings however needed the assistance of a 50T press at work BMW boot filled with parts from back end to go to powder coaters 2 x trailing arms 1 x Sub frame 2 x Tie bars 2 x Stone shields 2 x Donut Mount brakest Loads of little bits etc etc All delivered and hopefully collect Friday Yes the bloody bearings have been removed and the bushes - thank you to my work eng shops 50T press So time to concentrate on the rust............ holes............. Rear bumper removed - what a cow of a job - 10 mins on a GSI - 40 mins on an LC with some of the fixings already detatched Petrol tank dropped - why on earth would I remove that - Well I don't like welding above it....... My worst fear was that it would look worse than Malcolm Campbells "Bluebird" the one they dragged out of the lake after a billion years..... Over to you Sean  Pics soon......... honest - I working to a deadline but it has to be right first time so pics are last thing on my mind Oh and I will do a before and after picture of the new metal work required when I work out exactly what the missing metal should look like!!!

So removing bodykits on an LC is always a scary job in my mind as a result I didn't know quite how far my little "there's a hole in my bucket etc" issue went and as no one is playing the game  So I got up early so I could do a couple of before pics Passenger Side Looks like just a little clean up - maybe a small repair - repaint and I get to leave the arch on Drivers Side Needed to remove the arch because I remember the "Herald of Free Enterprise" LC Picture - 2 bolts sheared - two came out fine Bloody sunroof drains And once I get the skirt off the drivers side I can assess the true extent of the Sill work required (yes the nut holding the front on is rusted solid) I have got a very very very small localised patch on the chassis rail - no doubt that will turn to dust and result in a 3 foot section of the chassis rail needing to be fabricated and replaced...... (ever the optimist)

surely that last photo isn't of your car? It just amazes me how quickly cars rust out here in the UK! That same car in Australia or NZ would practically be rust free still.

No it's not mine just a good example of how much they can rot Poor opel design married to Lotus plasma cut bodywork mods with enough rust prevention to hold the tinworm back till the corrosion warranty expires

love that car, had the normal Carlton years ago but it was the "poor mans" version, the 3000gsi. Exactly the same places where the rust hides though. My arches were further gone, held together by plastic and flex underseal Will be well worth restoring, not many left . Keep it up
