Well, those that came to the Herts/Beds meet this week got to see the real thing as I'd specially sorted out the wheels that day but here for everyone else - they're on! Hoorah! ;D It'll probably only be temporary at the moment as I don't really want them getting ruined on the winter roads but the tyres on the 4.5 steelies will need replacing by the spring/summer which means we'll put new boots on the Wellers and have cool wheels all year round I have to add that I had exceptional service form a local-ish tyre place on Wednesday when they fitted new tyres to two of the Cosmics. They guy doing it knew what they were and took a huge amount of care, wire brushing the beads and insisted that he wouldn't put any visible weights on. Probably took 45 mins to fit them up. The manager said they much preferred working on old stuff ;D Anyway, Northway Tyres in Edgware - big thumbs up

Wow, not had a good couple of days work on a car like this for yonks! The MOT is due in a few weeks and while the passenger side tread plate probably wouldn't fail for being rusty (seperate chassis ;D ) it wasn't looking nice and I didn't want to tempt fate. I'd bought the panel I'd need ages ago too so had everything to hand. On Friday I had a few hours spare so I chopped out everything the needed to come out. The step plate is actually a rather pointless sandwich but I elected to do things properly and repair the bottom (floor panel) area and then put the new tread plate over the top as originally done. Here's the two layers I removed. A bit shocking was that, after a glance at the seat belt mount area I tapped it with a hammer and it fell out! Proper repair needed there too then. There was also another fairly random hole to deal with just inboard of the step plate. So, Sunday was to be welding day. Just as well the weather was good. Then an hour or so after starting I ran out of wire! Arrggghhhh! Off to Halfords only to discover that so much of it is now full of "Ripspeed" nonsense they don't do any welding consumables any more. A couple of miles further to a proper factors and I'm all set. Some silly London traffic later and I've used up 1 1/2 hours of daylight There, that's looking better. The plug welds are where it was originally spot welded and are hidden by the door seal strip. Some paint and its done - just as well as it was dark by now! Oh and to finish a nice moody shot of it wearing the Cosmics which I've taken off again now so they don't get ruined by the salty roads....

Thanks guys. Alistair, its not got a fresh ticket yet. Probably get it done next week - always a worrying time even if you're 99% sure of a pass!

Nice repairs! Still looks great that car, was nice to see it in the flesh at the meet! How much per hour BTW - odd about Halfords! When I stumbled into ours they were still doing all the welding gaff but they had cunningly stashed it away with the socket sets? All hung on a wall you could walk right past!

I do like your herald, espec the alloys (got a set of 10x6 cosmics on one of the minis at the min).
I've always found that the gas from Halfords doesn't last as long as the gas from machine mart?

Craig1010, I haven't used the little disposable bottles for some time now. I found that even with semi regular welding they worked out quite expensive and so I rent a bottle of argoshield from BOC. If you consider what the little bit I did above would have cost to be done properly at a bodyshop, that job alone would have cost more than my bottle rent. I remember finding the welding much easier going and much improved when I started using the big bottle. Anyhow, some added belt action today for a bit more period flavour... ;D Only the drivers side as the baby seat would get in the way of the top strap on the other side. I've left the regular belt in too as I adjusted the harness for me adn didn't get a chance for Katie to try it out and see how much adjusting would be needed for it to switch between the two of us.

Today I was mostly doing this: 1500 engine hoiked out of donor car Followed soon after by its overdrive box. Car was quite a nice blue from the factory I also (obviously!) took lots more of it apart, dash, drivers seat etc. The seat rails are proving a curse word to get out which meant I couldn't get the carpet out yet which is a bit of a pain. The wiring was pretty horrendous with scotchclok type things and screw blocks all over the place. All being well I'll get the remainder of the bits we want out this week and can then sort out getting it taken away.

Its been a while since I updated this obviously! That engine and box combo (^^^) is now installed in the car and running pretty well. It's certainly using minimal if any oil and the overdrive means the car is much more pleasant at speed. Anyway the point of this brief update was that not only has a new car arrived at Seth towers this week but I also finally got the new-old shoes on the Herald ;D Northway Tyres in Colindale NW London were their usual, excellent, helpful selves and sorted us out with a pair of 165/70's for the fronts and a pair of 175/70's for the backs after putting the bare rims on the balancer to check for roundness (I had concerns!) Once that was done I had to stick all 16 nuts in the lathe and machine them one at a time to suit as these wheels needed a very small diameter sleeve and I could get nothing even close off the shelf. All seems good and I now keep looking at the cars reflection in shop windows as I roll along in slow moving traffic ;D
