Hey, Just joined up so I though I'd start a thread over here which I'll update every so often as I get stuff done to this (the wife's) car. Current spec is: (Edit - adding notes in teal to reflect alterations as at June 08)Engine - 1500 spitfire running single 1 1/2" carb on Toledo manifold for better MPG and ease of tuning (car gets used for a 100 mile commute a couple of times a week) Gearbox - standard three rail non o/d Single rail J type O/dRear axle - 3.63 ratio diff from a GT6 I believe 3.89 Spitfire MkIV diff giving a theoreticall top end of over 100. Happy at motorway speeds though. Brakes - fronts converted to discs as this car came with drums (discs optional on Herald 1200's when new) Front Suspension - adjustable Spax shocks with adjustable ride height. Springs are v. short and around 35% uprated. Polybushed anti roll bar and steering rack mounts. Rear supension - Standard spring but adjustable Koni shocks and 1" spring spacer/lowering block.Wheels - Herald estate 4.5" steels (1" wider than saloon) with 175/70/13's, Dolomite chrome wheel nuts! Firestone 5.5 x 13 wheels (circa 1970) with 165/70 and 175/70 tyres with modified wheel nuts to suit.
Interior - a couple of extra gauges, column mounted tach and a steering wheel from an MG 1300 adapted to a Spitfire hub. Body - all standard, mostly original paint. Finally some photos taken today. A newer photo for reference.

I've been away, looked at other threads, posted some comments and now I'm back. I STILL LOVE IT. You know what would look really good on it? The all-red rear lenses I've got in my garage...but you can't have them!

Hey rmad, don't suppose you've got a pair of Bond bucket seats stashed away have you. They're definately on my wish list! Thanks for the kind words y'all Your Vitesse wagon looked ace too Was it a genuine one? We had a 1200 estate for a couple of years but it had to go to pay for the Sun-tor. I was planning on tuning it uising all period parts and had collected carbs, exhaust, cam etc but it never happened.

The only Herald stuff I've got 'in stock' are my prized rear lights, a set of 4.5Js and a singular Dolly sprint rim! The Bond seats were Les Leston items weren't they?
My Estate was a privately converted Vitesse saloon with a Herald estate rear section. There were no 'official' estates from the factory, although the made some which went out the back door so to speak and a London Triumph dealer made a few special orders for customers. Mine ended up in Daytona Beach!

Yeah, I knew about the factory conversions which is why I asked. They were done at the main London distributor at Acton I think. The Bonds had Leston steering wheels but I'm not sure where the seats came from. They're proper old buckets though and would look ace in the saloon. There's only a handful of wagons in the states. Is yours the one Cliff Watts has?

Lovely! That's what I like to see! Excellent little motor. If you ever need a mint 1300 engine & all ancilleries, runs like a beaut, single carb, there's one on my floor I have no use for anymore

The paint is actually a blue but I remember the Triumph 2000 that we had when I was about 6 that was this colour. We all thought it was green except my dad. It'll stay until I find the time and money to do a couple of body mods, prep it and blag somewhere to hae a go painting it. Lewis, we've got a spare 1500 we took out of a Dolly we had a as a winter run around a couple of years ago as a spare but don't chuck your's out before telling me! What's it out of?

Little update on this too. Been playing with the lathe I bought for work reasons a month or so ago. Made up nice new steering wheel centre to replace the ill fitting Dolomite one I butchered to fit when I put the wheel on.

So, about three weeks ago Katie went to Canley Classics up north of Coventry after work to pick up the recon driveshaft assy (and drop of an old knachkered exchange one) the Herald has been desperately in need of. But the hot weather and needing to use the car put paid to immediate fitting. Finally on Tuesday this week I was able to get out there and do it and while I was at it fit the spring spacer block from Jigsaw Racing too..... Here's old shaft removed and stripped with the vertical link and other bits bolted on to the new assembly. The old one had a worn yoke meaning that the U/J cup spins wearing it even more. There was noticable play and the only solution is to use a good or new shaft. But the shaft replacement was the boring necessary bit. The fun modification bit was fitting the spacer block This is looking sideways across the car at the diff. The spring is bolted to the top of the diff and acts as the "top wishbone" (The driveshaft is the bottom wishbone as its a swing axle design.) The aluminium block is designed to fit between spring and diff, moving the spring up and altering the relationship between spring and driveshaft giving some neg camber and mcuh less likelyhood of the dreaded wheel tuck-in. Here's the block sat on top of the diff (looking from the other side). It was actually a good tight fit And now with spring replaced on top. This is the view from inside the boot and the retaining bolts are just clear of the small cover that covers the hole ! Then I just had to fit the new shaft, bleed the brakes..... Got it all done and took it for a test drive and there's a definite improvement in the handling, especially on the limit. Lifting off mid corner (or roundabout ) just results in a nice tightening of line with a bit of oversteer instead of lots of steering wheel action. The car ought to be 1" lower too but I can't see much difference. Haven't taken a comparison photo yet. There is visibly more neg camber though.
