Hello All, Got myself back into Mk1 ownership today by purchasing a 1975 Golf 1500cc LS Auto. Very early cars like this are what's known as 'swallowtails' by VW nerds (like me!) due to the different panel between the rear lights than later models. It will be my weekend/show car once I've done a bit of work on it and I'll be keeping the Mk2 2L 16v for daily use. The Mk1 Polo now really has to go so it's for sale, ( retrorides.proboards29.com/index.cgi?board=FSW&action=display&thread=1137141221) - just don't have the room for all these cars! Only got a few pics at the moment, more to come. Any ideas, comments and suggestions welcome. Needless to say, the carbs aren't quite standard... ;D

That looks like a really tidy motor, nice one. Is the car park in the last picture a VAG only car park? ;D

Thanks for the kind words. It is a lovely car, no Tax or MOT at the moment as it needs a fair bit of work but watch this space, hope to have it on the road for some shows in the Spring/Summer.

Great buy Stu!
We're used to seeing this at the All Types show every year, and absolutely adore it.
Hope to see it at some shows this year too

SteB - yep, will be at some shows this year all being well. It's been in storage for about 18 months so some jobs to do first to tidy it up and get it reliable but after that should be fine, just cosmetic stuff to attend to. A worthy Polo replacement I think (not that I needed another car, and haven't sold the Polo yet...!) Hotwire - Can't think what you mean about the spare 16v engine?!? I want to keep this car fairly standard though, it's only done 34k miles!

I like the wheels...never really been too keen on them, but they just suit this thing down to the ground.

Not sure if I might have to crank it up just a touch for everyday use as there are a lot of speedbumps around here and I fear for the sump and autobox!

Right, a bit of an update as I've had a couple of weekends to work on the car now since I got it. Last weekend I started by taking a trip to GSF for some service parts and then changing the cambelt and fanbelt. I had forgotten how nice and easy 8v cars are to work on, really straightforward setting up the timing, taking the pulleys off and everything. After that I got the old girl running again and checked the timing was ok and nothing was catching the new belts, all was well. I then flushing the cooling system a few times as it was running a little hot, the water that came out was fairly rusty looking and now it seems to run much cooler so that's a good thing. Then I decided it was time to higher the suspension up a bit. I know it looks really cool so low but it would never pass an MOT and it was a pain to work on, couldn't get a trolley jack under it. So I took each wheel off in turn and applied plenty of WD40 to the coilvers and cranked them up by 4cm at each corner. The car does look quite a lot higher now although it is still low compared to 'normal' cars of course. My aim was to get it so it sat with the lower wishbones parallel to the floor as I believe this about the best height for handling isn't it? (I read that somewhere) [ ] This weekend I started by washing and polishing the old girl, then hoovering her out and tidying up all my mess in the garage to get an idea of where I was up to. I put the numberplate back on in the standard central position which I prefer and then this afternoon I put some standard headlights on and sorted out a few wiring gremlins to get them all working correctly. I also stuck a top chrome strip on the grille from a spare grille I got off Pete, the previous owner (cheers Pete!) [ ] I still need the bottom chrome strip though if anyone has one knocking around? I much prefer the look of the standard headlights, not keen on the clear ones (crosshairs are they called?) so I will most likely sell those if anyone fancies them to raise funds for further Mk1 bits! [ ] That's about it so far, I spent the rest of the afternoon sitting revving the car in the driveway to annoy the neighbours! [ ] Assorted pics from today: Feedback welcome, what do you think?
