Ok.. right, well sorry for the potentially modern post - but wondered what peoples experiences are.
I want to keep my 360 on the road, but to do so I'm gonna sell my S40 T4 and buy something small and diesel instead. I'm thinking either Pug 306 D Turbo or Rover 220sdi... has anyone ever tried either of these and what were your experiences?

306 will do the job but I wouldn't enjoy owning one myself what about a 205 1.7td or 2.0d (if there is such a thing)
EDIT; there you go, 205td
Manual, 82,000 miles, Green. Future Classic, MOT 12months, Tax April, CD Player, Power steering, electric windows, sunroof, almost new front tyres, some service history, nippy and economical. £450. ono

Alright Mike ;D Nah, doubt I'd enjoy owning anything like this - but it just needs to do decent economy, small-medium sized, reliable and not too painfully slow! 205 TD of that description sounds pretty nice, need to sell my S40 first so I can't go chasing yet, though ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) Although might be a bit old :S I'd imagine the next generation of cars to be much quieter/refined - which is what I prefer in a boring fwd daily lol.

A 205 td is ultra-economical, but a little crude. The 306 is more refined, still very fun to drive and a bit more comfortable. The zx is basically the same thing as a 306, but uglier therefor cheaper.
Id go for a 306 myself.

Citroen ZX, a 306 but less money and in my opinion a better car. Other choices would be the Astra mk3 or a Felicia/Ibiza

Can recommend a 306, mine has 212k on the clock and is going pretty strong! It does need a rear beam, but thats about it and thats more labour than anything!

306 is good but change the coolant every couple of years or the head will go pop. Same with the Citroens.
As I'm a Merc convert, I'd have to say a diesel 190. 2.0 is dog slow but the 2.5 is reasonably rapid I believe. W123 is also good - more solid that your average lump of graphite.

I thought a 306 D Turbo would be a good choice, the 106 is again like the 205 - good but a bit crude for what I want. Nobody's made comment on the Rover 220 tdi though - as far as I gather they're surprisingly good and cheaper too... so it's basically between them

The Rover is a good car and the engine is pretty sound from what I know. They aren't very desirable thanks to the K-series woes which means that as you've found, they are pretty cheap. 420td is also an option, 620d a nice motor if you want something larger.

A bit big I'm afraid, would make a nice daily though! Also want to keep insurance down, both the 220 and 306's are around group 5-7 ;D

Having owned both a 306 and a Rover 414 bubble, I'd say both are close for ride comfort but the Pug nails it for handling. French electrics can be a pain in the ar5e though - the old "locks and then unlocks" gremlin hit my 306 a few times. Only electrical problem with my Rover was one of those sodding after market immobilisers which a friend removed for me!

Haha yeah, I've had a 405 before and my Dad had another... and the electrics aren't their strong point! Particularly that pesky factory immobiliser! Ah well, looks like a close call - probably depend on the best example that comes up first more than anything!

Avoid the hdi engine or any other common rail type diesel engine. They're not very diy friendly ;D
