I had a 1.9 XRDT before and yes it was good my only regret about the HDi is its too much hastle too run it on veg oil.A 1.9 Dturbo in XSi trim is a good motor to have, also look out for the rare ZX volcane td.Some Zx's have a different front suspension design to the 306 and don't handle as good but are a little softer for comfort. To all the HDi bashers out there i am merely voicing my opinion on the cars even if i'm in "the minority" maybe i'm just lucky with mine ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ,but i could go on all day about Ford's ,vauxhalls and such but we all have different opinions Eh! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Its just not designed to be servicable by your average monkey with a big hammer. It doesnt matter what the make of car is, the technology is the same on all of them.

There was the case when somone serviced their Hdi at the roadside and got a piece of grit in the new fuel filter, which the injection system then fired at high pressure through the piston leaving it holed and the engine needed major surgery. I'm sorry but that really defies the laws of physics. Have you seen the size of the nozzles on a modern injector? Any piece of grit that would fit through a hole that small would not be capable of holing a piston. I've seen the tips of injectors break up and go through pistons and i've seen blocked injectors cause melted pistons but nothing is actually gonna through an injector without getting vapourised.

A bit late I know, but I'd like to add my tuppence for the Rover SDi. SWMBO had an R plate for about 2 years and it never went below 40mpg. Most weeks would see a varied amount of driving (m'ways / towns / quick B roads etc.) and it would give 45-48 as a norm. It was the 1st diesel we had and to be honest I did $hit a brick when I took it for the first MOT and it failed on emissions. The tester said take it away change the diesel and air filter and run some injector cleaner through then give it some stick. Did all that and it flew through. After that I always did the same before the MOT and never had a problem. The car was sold to her sister about 3 years ago and is still going strong. I know she's had a resistor pack for the heater and an exhaust centre section fitted. Not bad really in 5 years. I did hear on another forum about some guy who had one and tweaked it with the suspension of the MG ZR (bought cheap off the MG forum) and a boost upgrade from Rover Ron and he said it went like hell and handled pretty decent too. I think the boost increase takes it from 105 to 130hp but according to his website 140 odd is possible. The car I mentioned earlier will be for sale at the end of the summer and I am seriously thinking of getting it back and messing about with it as above and trying a bit of veg oil powered commuting.
HTH,
JB

Yup, the "italian tune up" is an essential part of the diesel owners pre-MoT checks!

Pretty much decided it will be Rover based, need to check out insurance on the 400 series, if it's similar then that will be the preferred choice! I've been reading on the MG OC forum too - all too easy to get some parts from Rover Ron - better not be tempted!

I was down the scrappie yesterday and found 4 rovers with the L series engine in them, all of them smashed up in crashes and the engines appeared to be intact.Even found an 825 diesel, can't even remember when i last saw one of them.

i would not touch anyhdi engine car, never mind the intank pump failing,i have saw a few where the main pressure pump starts failing, puts lots of tiny metal filings through the system, costs £500 for the pumpthen fitting, then finding out the injectors are gubbed because of the shrapnel aswell, there is a tiny metal filter on the back of the pump you can usually find some fuel pump bits in there. nothing you can do to stop it,apart from not buying one anyway.
