appart from the fact this magazine is written in the style of an inbred retard chucked out of school aged 12 for shaggin' his sister round the bike shed off his tits on scrumpy... AND being part filled with ads for mobile phone downloads and toss-off phone services.... but....
I happened upon the current issue and theres some surprisingly decent cars in there....
A Nova I liked, Mk1 Fiesta with RWD, an aircooled Beetle with a Porsche lump, event/sundry other featurettes have pics of a '56 Chevy, '05+ Ford Mustang, a couple of Capris, MK1 golfs, etc.
2 of their staff cars are Mk2 Polo breadvans (both stock though).
Mention of "rubish old British cars" included Reliant Regal - someones been paying attention - not falling into the "Robin Reliant" trap there....
Theres even a decent Mk4 Polo in a Euro-stylie with a 1.8 5 valve turbo Audi lump in it if youcan hack that modern level.
Blimey.... still got a w@nk BMW on the cover but still.
kids are showing some class.

Fast Car was actually quite good when it first came out. Dave Walker of subsequent CCC and PPC fame used to write in it. Then along came Max Power and it followed their lead.
I haven't read it for years.

I think it's since Max Power 'grew up' and didn't close down overnight, they've sussed that there might just be a market for car magazines that appeal to those of us allowed out on our own.... makes sense, do you appeal to 16-year-olds who a) don't drive, b) can't afford to buy anything from any of the advertisers and c) turn straight to the t!ts pages or to 26-year-olds who can afford to build the kind of cars featured, and know a thing or two about what makes a quick car.

The guys behind Fast Car are far more 'our' kind of people than you'd think... A couple of their cars have popped up on here in the past As I believe Elvis said, "Never criticise what you don't understand son, you never walked a mile in that mans shoes."

I bought a copy late last year as they had a bunch of tasty Euro'd motors on the front. Basically the cars were good and appealed etc but the writing wasn't great and the amount of w*nk fodder was ridiculas. Especially when you consider a mag such as Nuts, Zoo or Front has less in that department.

The phone lines advertised in the back are an inevitable part of our changing culture I'm afraid. They generally have to (and do willingly) pay a lot more to advertise in the mags, this added revenue cannot be ignored given declining sales and constantly shifting reader interests. The Nato green Lexus was Ben's, as was the euro look brown Saxo... The other week I was discussing the merits of mid 80s Jags and Rovers with the editor and another staff member, if anything they have a wider understanding and interest in the modified car market than a lot of people, as they have to

Yeah I know what you mean, the adult industry are notorious for paying more than most for advertising etc and to ignore that as you say would be stupid. Its just a shame that our culture has come to the stage that people are willing to pay £3.00 a minute to listen to some housewife doing her ironing chatting away. It is beyond me how these companies survive but I can only guess that the industry continues to grow judging the amount of pages are dedicated to these phonelines. Is the Polo Breadvan slammed on ATS Classics still about? Think it belonged to one of the writers.

It was phone lines being advertised in Practical Classics that was the last straw for me. I didn't much care for the latest re-vamp (I note that the person responsible has left) and I don't think current editors up to much, but having to explain to my mates 6 year old son, he shouldn't be looking at that page, and a funny look from his mother as I say was the last straw

IIRC, it was due entirely to a member of the ad team, who has since been told very firmly by the editors that such adverts are not acceptable in the pages of either Practical Classics or Classic Cars.

A similar thing happened with one of the Land Rover Magazines last year IIRC. Must admit I just view them with bemusement at how some lame-brains will happily part with £2 a minute to hear some skanky fat trog witter on about her 'Robust Hessian Undergarments' but I can see how some people would be offended by it. Have some proper Fast Cars.....

Thats one of the most frustrating things about car magazines in general those flipping ads at the back. Sods law says thats the first page anyone flicks to if they pick it up knowing nothing about cars. Spent ages cutting them out so that i could just leave my magazines on the coffee table without having to explain it to younger family members etc etc.
When fast car was based in Orpington i got to know some of the writers as they would always be coming to Halfords for odds and sods, one of the writers has an Ax as well so was a founder member of my other forum the AXOC.
Was a big fan of Revs in the early days as it was down to earth, well written with little or no swearing and devoid of smut. Then overnight it went completely and utterly downhill and eventually merged with Max Power.

TBH its not just the adverts in Fast Car. Theres a 4 or 5 page spread just of a blonde lass with her norks out relaxing by a swimming pool. Theres gawky lasses at "kruizes" whipping their toips up in the events section, there's the proliferation of ads for back boxes or LexArze lights where some model is featured rubbing said parts against her crotch....
I know on the Max Power forum (sorry) there were lots of posts in semi litterate text speak saying "where are all the birds and norks" after the revamp and a bunch of posts back in actual real english saynig "we don't want that in the mag".
Depends who they want as their readers really.
The language of the magazine (FC) is dreadful, loads of swearing, loads of just bad grammar etc. and thats a "barrier" to those of us with sensibilities more easily offended.... ;D

They generally have to (and do willingly) pay a lot more to advertise in the mags, this added revenue cannot be ignored given declining sales and constantly shifting reader interests. I think that the two things "declining sales" & "phone lines" in magazines will continue to be linked...... In a negative way I dislike their presence in a magazine and it has to be something very special content wise for me to buy any magazine that does have pages of this type of content at the back. If I wanted to buy a w@nk mag I'm tall enough to reach the top shelf and buy one - but as I don't and I'm brousing the lower shelf looking for something to buy with an automotive type content I expect to get automotive content. Max Power is improving for sure
