I will never understand the fuss people make about Zymol Royale. It's not just "here's a tub of super expensive wax", it's essentially a license for professional detailing companies to say they use the best stuff available, hence the lifetime free refills. If you think these sort of people are often detailing cars worth £100K+ all day and the amount they will charge to do that, it makes a lot of sense. Vintage Ferrari-owning tycoons would naturally rather have that than someone turn up with a £5.99 tin of Triplewax and an old towel. It's not a case of Lord Snooty ordering a pot to do the Rolls with, the people who could afford to buy it for themselves probably wouldn't clean their own cars anyway!
I wouldn't want to label myself as a "detail freak" or anything like that, but cleaning/polishing/waxing a car is just another part of its upkeep, it helps stop the rot take hold and protects the paintwork. If you don't wash your car ever, that's up to you, I won't tell people what to do with their cars. You can always go too far with something too, how clean some people get their cars is just insane to me. But it isn't that much effort to keep a car clean, especially if it is well-waxed.
Up to you what you want to do, just bear in mind that never washing a car isn't a million miles away from never servicing it.

Heres what gets me about the obsessive compulsive that did that to the VXR. He didn't even TOUCH the underneath!
That's how you keep a car working properly. Not by poncing about with wax, but by giving the mechanicals a good scrubbing, and blasting the curse word off the underside of the shell.

That's a very valid point to be honest. The thing I worry about with these new cars is those enormous plastic liners inside the arches they all seem to have. Imagine what sort of grot will be under those in 10 years.

Moderns are all galvanised now. The trouble comes when they get a knock. The repaired section, no matter how well done, is now prone to rust. Thanks to galvanising, the designers don't think much about avoiding water traps, so they rot out faster than a marina in a marina.
And of course, the running gear on a modern isn't always properly protected. Some subframes and beam axles and suspension arms are only epoxy painted, and get the worst of the stone chips too. On a new car, you are likely to have the bottom arms rot out and snap before the floor goes.

Up to you what you want to do, just bear in mind that never washing a car isn't a million miles away from never servicing it. That's the biggest load of plums i've heard in a long time, I had a 306 that I never washed in 5 years of ownership, but it was fully ramped and stamped so it ran beautifully, it just looked a state. As I said to people who told me it was dirty 'if it bothers you that much you wash it' I hated the car so much that I resented giving it the time it would take to wash it. As for the Clio, God washes that for me, or if you borrow it, then clean it before you bring it back. The lad round the corner did for me as a thank-you for helping fit a wheel cylinder. Modern cars are appliances to me, and i'd never dream of washing and polishing the fridge.

Theres a real horrible case of double standards in this topic now, Fair enough taking 20+ steps to "detail" a car is excessive and not necissary but to take pride in not caring for your posessions is surely far worse then someone who does?
Also if someone veherently hates a car they own why would they own in for 5 whole years? Thats just stupidity when there are so many options out there. Not many people take their fridge outside so its not a reflection on your character like a car is seen to be.
Or are we still on the "its cool to own a car which looks like you don't care for it" BS?

Sadly, a lot of the time people have to drive what they have to drive. Sometimes its sheer lack of money for a better car, or lack of time to properly maintain a retro car, or a need for 4 doors or need for plenty of fuel economy.. Or some combination of any of those circumstances.
When you are stuck for wheels, sometimes you just have to use whatever is on offer. I know some people with daily drivers they were given for free, and have spent a long time trying to get into a position where they can ditch it.
Don't blame people for resenting the shopping cart they have to use. Why should anyone take pride in a possession which they consider to be junk? You buy bog roll because the alternative is really uncomfortable. Same with bangers.
The reason some people take pride in NOT washing their modern is because they love cars. They know about cars, and know a worthless one when they see it. Not washing your modern daily driver is saying "I have better cars to spend time on"

Not washing your modern daily driver is saying "I have better cars to spend time on" ".....right after I get my modern daily welded up, on account of 5 years worth of grit/mud eating through the bodywork"

our Mazda was given to us for free. Em hates it because its not a Celica or a Mini or whatever. Its not exactly a '64 Impala or '69 Camaro to me either. But I'll make the best of it while we have it. It will be maintained well and kept clean and shiny, and tindy and clean inside. As well as I can with Em driving it anyway.... Point is as we are "stuck with it" until we can afford a "nice" car we might as well try keep it nice as it can be until then.
Also also as it was gifted to us by my parents it seems churlish and unappreciative not to take some care of it.

Whats to understand? Some people like to take pride in what they drive. Just because the majority of people wash their car with a gritty sponge and the cheapest shampoo they can find doesn't mean everyone else has to have low standards. Easy now. I clean my modern inside almost every week because I don't like driving a scabby car inside. There really is no point in me washing it obsessively every week because I live up a country lane and it gets covered in curse word no matter what the weather. Every two weeks or so it gets jetwashed, or if I'm feeling flushed, a valet. The paint on my Volvo doesn't respond to cutting compound, polish or anything. Believe me, I've tried. I don't like the insinuation I don't look after what I own thanks. I keep the Volvo as dry as I can because I know how badly they can rot. I will also echo what rustybits said, that mechanicals are WAY more important in the scheme of things than bodywork, so long as the latter makes it through and MOT and isn't structually unsound I'd rather have my Amazon looking a bit down and mechanically A1 than it being clean and clinical and slamming into a wall because I just spunked £300 on a bottle of polish rather than a decent set of pads and discs. Thanks for your sweeping statements. I still don't understand what polishing a car every week achieves when you actually want to use \ drive the thing. Nice rotary avatar mind.
