I have an MGB which is unroadworthy but i want to know if the overdrive works
Is putting it on axle stands and running it up a reasonable way to check it?
I suppose I'm wondering if the rolling resistance of the road might come into it..

should be Ok, make sure you securely chock the front wheels and don't run it for to long as the diff may be working hard if one wheel spins up faster than the other.

Take the back wheels off first perhaps

ok, why? Would it help with something?

I think Metroman is thinking if it falls off the stands for any reason it's less likely to drive through the garage wall. It should be fine as long as it's nice and stable on the stands and wheels are fully chocked. It wont hurt the diff at all. I've had mine showing 140 on the speedo on stands

Thanks, all. I'll give it a go

ok, why? Would it help with something? Less rotating mass, thus less vibration and possibility of the car flying off the axle stands!

I've had mine showing 140 on the speedo on stands Did something similar with my Amazon when I'd just refitted the recon overdrive (with the valuable assistance of the late Em / V8 Herald of this parish) - only 120 though, on my aunt's driveway in south London, which was a few mph more than I'd seen nearly twenty years ago on an autobahn. With the wheels on, it is easier to see the change in rotation speed when the o/d kicks in and out as with no load, the wheels speed changed rather than the engine speed (only Amazons to have tachos were the 123GTs). Both wheels spun up at the same time - in fact I have a vague recollection that they rotated slowly when in neutral too, due to oil drag?

I think you ought to be able to see the speedo jump up when you engage o/d if thats easier than looking at the wheels to see an increase in speed.
