side view looks now more harmonic and deeper front looks more like the original... i had to lift up the front grill because the Speciale as a race car was never constructed to get a lizence plate, and we here in EU/Germany have realy huge front plates, next problem here in Germany we have to have the law that the lizence plate must be minimum 200mm away from street

When i got the car for modification the lizence plate situation was like this! Was looking like a bad joke, so that was a NO GO for me Was the reason i changed position of the front grill, still a couple of mm away from 200mm but no one will see and the look is much improved.

i do a lot of pictures to show the design process, think its the most interesting process, later there will be only finishing and small improvements to see.. Lifting up the mouth does help with the plate, but made it complicate to find the right shapes, special the additional lamps and vents for cooling making troubles now. thats why i change the sizes and positions a little bit to get a nice shape even not that close to the original... always have to look from the side as well

roughly the shape is coming together in a nice way, side view with the long nose thats where iam now.. with the sidemarker and the indicators the look will be complete. I think it was worth the effort to longer the nose, closing the gaps and finish the shape of the front will follow now before fiberglasing the bits together. Later the line of the frontwing has to be changed and the frondhood has to be made

No negatives from me, I absolutely love the work and attention to detail that is going in to this. I love it!

Loving it too. Proves the point that it's subtle changes that make all the difference.

my opinion is always to take care about details, they matter much more as you think Same will be with the roofline, a new more shaped rear window and the flowing lines of front and rear fender. Changing of the vents behind the door window to fit the Z3 glass will improve the look as well. Last will be the lower line from rear wheels backwards.
I think after that modifications i will stop with changes and finish this project to a high level surface and paint quality.
Maybe the car will not be perfect in my eyes but a nice looking one with the right details and a real 60s feeling from italian sportscars

It'll probably be better built than an 1960s Ferrari. At least the same on both sides!

Built quality of that race cars was never that good, handling and brakes are interesting to say it polite, 60 years development improved everything. Thats the positive thing with the BMW donor, nice handling, good engine and brakes, perfect ventilation, heating and aircondition so you have real fun with.
A conversion like this is fun to look at and to drive with as well

as i told before iam not happy with the roofline, because of the nearly flat rear screen the roof is to flat in every direction. Original the screen has been sourced from a MGB GT hatch, for me not the best idea for a car that should have a nice rounded roofline with tension in every direction. picture show what iam talking about... its not complete straight but for my taste it doesnt fit to that kind of car

so when i take over the redesign of that car i started to search a couple of different rear glas versions. Iam not a big fan of plastic rear windows, they scratch easy and going blind after using the car in a normal way. I prefer glass, durable and with heating so even with bad weather you are able to see whats going on behind you. today i got the perfect shaped rear window for this project. don't know if is that visible on the pictures but its exact what iam looking for. Gaskets and chrom surround are easy to get as well. If someone is later looking for a race version exact 3d formed plastic screen is available too.

thats the base i will start to modify the greenhouse, a surround molded from the donor car will be made and around this perfect sourround i will build up the new greenhouse. Should be a good fit for glas, rubbers and chrome! So it looks like my last big issue could be solved now. Next week new rear wheels should arrive so i have everything to start rear mods as well. started to laminate the parts from the front together to get a stiff base i could start later with final shaping

Nice. I imagine your friend (customer) is thrilled to see his car being chopped apart even more! Well worth it in the end though.

theomk2 you've done a fantastic job with this, the lines look much more cohesive. Did your MX5 project progress with Tribute?

at the beginning Robert as owner of the car was a little scared seeing what i do with the car, cutting in pieces was not on his agenda......but now he trusts my work 100%, telling me to do what have to be done. So iam free to change everything i don't like.

its hard to get a picture showing the nice curved glass, for me a difference like the mods done at the front. Clear visible when the roofline is adapted, will improve the complete shape from rear and side view as well

starting to be a fan of the new shaped car, if it will perform like planed, molds from the Coupe will be made to build later a small series of Coupes side by side with the California we will start in spring.
