I have the chance of a Daewoo Nexia 1.5 twin cam, its on a P plate, not the most retro of cars (even though it's a Mk2 Astra).
It has done 130000 miles, very good condition, with 9 mths MoT and a bit of tax. The downside is the head gasket is going, but on the plus side, I can have it for £100 if I want it.
Has anyone had experience with these cars, is the head gasket an easy job on the twin cam, any other problems they're common with?
Can these be modified easily, what can be done, anyone got any pictures of modified Nexia's?
I forgot to say, it also has full service history.

I know red-tops can be fitted. No idea how hard a job it is though! Or why people get so excited over red-tops.

(A) Fit red top (B) Cube it.
That simple really.
I've no idea where that 1500 twink comes from... is it a tiny ecotec or some sort of ex-mitsubishi thing? Comes with all the same rot-traps as the equivalent astra, so rampant rot in ridiculous places.

Seem to be prone to head gasket failure, they all seem to end their days this way.

A mate of mine had one as his first car. Low mileage, but looked like hell due to various car park and front gate encounters. And he used to red line it from cold ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) Quite nippy in the lower gears, I guess the ratio is quite low.

well spec'd giffermobile. Pretty sure the guys are right its a Mitsy lump in there. Anything you can do to a Mk2 Astra you can do to the Daewoo. Same car. At one point a popular Astra mod was to fit the Daewoo front panels.

I know red-tops can be fitted. No idea how hard a job it is though! Or why people get so excited over red-tops. Because they are fantastic engines. Very quick, torqey and a complete hoot for driveability. Daewoos are, I'm afraid , mostly wibblepoo. Headgaskets and general awfulness are very common. However they do, or did, fetch silly money on the bay. I really wouldn't bother with the h/g, bin the motor then red top, V6, C20LET or two litre 130 8 valve in it's place for a laugh. Loads of potential as others have said due to Vauxhall similarities. I don't think that for one minute EVER they will become classics or Retro but don't let that put you off.

sounds like the engine in the scort on the cover of retroford
it has a xe bottom end and the daewoo head bolted to it
don't see the point myself , just gets lots of puzzled looks lol
a ton for a car is always good , just thrash around in it if its no good , wang in an xe if it is

There are loads of 3-door nexias here in France. If it were legal, I would buy a rotten astra gte from uk and re-shell the mechanicals and interior into a rot-free nexia shell, but that sort fo thing is frowned upon here sadly.
I reckon they will start getting slightly popular as the vaux boys realise their potential as a source of shells to keep their gte`s on the road.

Can you still get Daewoo parts in the UK? They sold them here in the US for a couple years. The ones they sold here were total curse word, I test drove a Lanos while looking for a car for the daughter and it was the worst modern car I'd ever driven-all I could think while driving it was that some misguided person actually bought this thing new off the showroom floor. Boggles my brain. We hosted a korean exchange student who knew just enough about cars to know that Daewoo was the worst Korean brand. Lots of head gasket and timing belt failures.

Hmmm the Escort on the front of Retro ford this month used to run one. It now runs a Hybrid of Astra sri 1.8 16v bottom end and Daewoo head. Apparently the head is well shaped but the valves etc are a bit weak so he replaced them so it would rev higher. He has abut 160bhp from that combo on twin webbers I believe but may have been TB's

You'll be, erm, 'delighted' to know they've been rebranded as Chevrolet now as they're part of the GM empire. I'm probably one of the very few people on this earth who likes the Matiz (the smallest Daewoo) though apparantly their crash rating borders on the shameful.

There's a guy on Mk2-Astra.com who's rebuilt some fairly quick GTE running gear into a Nexia shell. There's quite a few differences, mostly engine bay and bulkhead, but he'll end up with a not-very-old Mk2 GTE at the end of it all. I say: 80's Astra Reiger widearch kit and 14x14 wheels

SOHC and DOHC engines are Vaux based, hence blow the head gasket on no.4 cylinder just like Astras' and Corsas' do ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Begining to lose count of the number of Corsas' etc I've had the pleasure of sorting at work. Only have a couple of customers with Nexias tho, so only repaired the one and that wasn't a twink. Can't see it being too bad a job, only pain will probably be getting to all the inlet manifold bolts etc as it's at the back.
