That's not optimum!! Any chance of bodging a pressure washer on to the pipes? could do mark , at the moment with the warmest room in the house last night at 14c iam going to avoid risking getting the inside of the house wet ,it took me half an hour to simply unfreeze the drain hosepipe section i used to drain the system down ,in the sink with hot water . so i'll se how it works now , and after the flush .flushing stuff should be here friday . Could you pop the 22mm T off and see if that is also blocked? At least if you have access to the flow and return feeds to the rad you can flush it in situ with some hose pipes. If you get something like a pair of flex pipes with speedfit on one end and standard screw fix on the other you should be able to make a water tight connection as well. I am by no means a plumber, but I have had to do a fair few bodge fixes lol i did that joe, i dismantled it as far back as the 22 ,and cleared it all up . it was very obvious where the blocked pipes were , and i could blow through the 10mm legs ,and listen for the bleed valves to whistle to work out which pipes went where , then i labelled them so far the not working rds , are now fully functional ...so i'm going to try the flush next, after i check the connnections for blockages again . That pipeworks bad but also good, it shows that you have something fundamentally wrong and if you get that working you may find that the existing rads are sufficent and if not that they will at least be better. The temperature difference (delta T drawn as a triangle then T) is important because the heat output of the radiators is better the higher it is in theory but you tend to design a system so that the return temperature is correct for the heating plant (boiler) to make it most efficent and 30oC is way higher than anything i've come across, we tend to try and get around 10-20oC delta T depending on the type of system. You also need flow temperature of course and 80/60oC would provide more heat to the radiators than 70/50oC for example. Old commercial systems used to be 82/71oC As you have said, a lower flow produces a higher delta T and a higher flow a lower one and with all that gunk in the system its not surprising you are losing a fair amount of heat but the rads are perhaps not getting that hot. At least all being plastic you should be able to clean the pipes out, if the bends aren't too sharp you can probably rod through the pipes as a last resort. It does seem odd though that they have used 10mm when doing it in plastic, the only 10mm plastic i've used was in the old wet underfloor heating system in the ensuite in my old house. Looks like once you have got it cleaned out you could do with one of those magnaclean filters on the system and servicing it reguarly until the worst of the crud has come out. Might be worth taking each rad off, taking them outside, removing the valves on each end and jet washing through them. Just to mention that I had one in my old house where the bleed screw hole was blocked so worth checking that while its off. Good luck :-) as an aside you mentiond Clun, about 20 years ago we replaced the main boiler room at the schoole there, its probably due another replacement soon happy days! now i have cleaned it out , the bad rads are working , i had 61c in the sitting room rad with a boiler set at 75c ,but room was only 14-15c , i think that the single rad is too small , bearing in mind the rally big bay window ,and wooden floor i hope to get a free double soon ,and a load of trv's too . delta T was 30c to 35c , now i have it flowing better , with the pump on no 3 fastest i have 60 /45 ,on a boiler setting of 65 (my oil saving daytime working setting) i think with the blockages ,the higher i ran the pump the tighter it crammed in the blockages , and the less it actually flowed, now it is acting logically . bleed valves are clear . i was just looking at those joe , and i agree ... however , the end 10mm to the living room is too short to go into a manifold with only side connections , also at the moment i can unscrew the fittings easily ish , so i can keep cleaning it if i need to ...also the rad that was blocked works well now , and the sitting room rad that was at 48c is now hitting 61c . so it looks like , whilst not perfect, i may be able to have this system work after a fashion. I can always extend the 22mm of course if i want to use a manifold like that . another factor is ,the sitting room , has a bare wooden floor with a 10" cavity under it to bare earth ,and 3 air vents in the walls under the wood floor , so its pretty cold , and the walls either side of the chimney are solid brick double layer , and there's the big bay window in the other outside wall , with no direct curtains on it .Also the ceiling is lath and plaster then a 8" cavity , then th planks of the bedroom above , its surprisng that unheated bedroom is icy cold , but i imagine a fair bit of heat is escaping into there . so i plan to put down underlay and one of the new carpets in the sitting room ,and may put a big carpet in the bedroom above , and rig up a curtain rail near the glass ,and maybe that will help . thank you all for the great input and encouragement , it means a lot . regards robert

A couple of good flushes with sentinel should clean it out well, it might take 2-3 to get it all properly clean & efficient.
Ref the floors. I used to cover this type of floor with thin hardboard sheets all over to the skirtings (with access holes cut & labelled for plumbing/electrics) which effectively seals the gaps in the floorboards but still allows it to breath.
A good quality underlay & carpet on top of that will warm up the room no end.
You can block off the airbricks temporarily in really cold weather without issues - just don't block them permanently.

Mr Robert. Great progress, and you must have been massively relieved (and perhaps a bit terrified) when you saw the state of the muck in there. However, it seems now that you have made a huge jump forward in getting those rads working, and knowing much more about what the system architecture is. It's always a relief to learn how your stuff is laid out, nice job.
I have a suspected sludged up rad in my bedroom here. Not sure I want to tackle removing and jetting the rad out at this time of year though.. I'm also like you, not wanting a wet floor! No drain port on the rad other than the bleed valve, and I don't want to drain the system down if possible.
Loving the updates, keep them coming.

We have the same floor/wall construction, as mentioned above I cover the airbricks with squares of polycarbonate roofing when it's cold, I did think about coming up with some sort of powered closable airbrick and wire it into a humidistat under the floor so the vents only open when the humidity is above a certain level. (conveniently humidity is very low when it's below freezing) As we decorate each room I've also started lifting the floor boards and laying Multifoil insulation under them, on the walls I have been fixing battens, then covering these with multifoil and counter battening followed by dry lining, it all makes a huge difference, we have a 15kw boiler which is on for about 4 hours a day in the current temps and keeps the house around 19 Celsius.(5 bed semi).
There are lots of things you could also do to reduce the consumption, we have the attic and conservatory on a separate zones and programmable controllers so they are only heated when needed, you can get programmable TRV's now which allow you to effectively have a zone for each room, ultimately though insulating it so there is less energy needed in the first place is the way to go though.

thanks Mark thats very encouraging , luckily these planks are v tight with no gap , maybe t and g ? so i am starting laying the underlay i brought from the old house , it was super expensive and bought to soundproof the bedroom with was over next doors living room . i should have enough for this room , and also the big room .
Thank you MM , i appreciate it , yes it was a big relief to even find that junction i had no idea where it was and just made an guess ,it was lovely to find all that gook in there.
Definately agree kevin , is multifoil better than an inch or two of foam panel ?

Well my christmas cautionary tale this year appears to involve me trying to have a bath .
I had decided that , a good way to get warm would be a nice hot bath ,so i put on the emersion heater this morning , which coupled with the rayburn, creates water just this side of steam ,and ran the bath , which is a huge 3ft deep clawfoot monster of a thing ,with a overhanging side mixer tap thing.
all went well , until i tried to add cold water ,i opened the tap , and nothing came out . turned it on , and off a few times ...nuffin.
i am still clothed at this point .
i get a basin , and start ferrying very cold water from the sink , to the bath . i don't want to add too much because i am really wanting a hot bath , not a luke warm 3ft deep one .
after about 5 basins i think its cool enough , so i disrobe , and put my left foot in ,er nooo ,much too hot .
i continue with the basins of cold water , now shivering due to buck nakedness .
Two or three more basins , and i think that's it , so confidently i climb straight in over the 3.5ft high rolled edge ,,sit down and immediately get out again nope , still too hot , felt like i had just immersed 'myself' in pure Magma.
i continue with the basins , now shivering due to being, A ,naked, and B, wet ... i had my own personal cloud of steam , and looked like a spirit from the netherworld .
Finally i had it just bearable , and jumped in ,almost immediately going lobster red .it was still HOT .
started to wash and generally lather up ,and having a nice soak .
just as i had reached a pleasant soporific, contemplative stage , there was a gurgling from the cold tap , which i had left on and forgotten to turn off, i was confused since i thought it was off , and just put it down to the frozen pipe thawing a bit . , and it knocked a couple of times , i still lay there drifting away ,until , all of a sudden , a six inch lollipop of freezing cold ice shot out of the tap .
Now this overhanging tap is about halfway down the bath , so when i tell you this lethal missile shot into the water like a ww2 torpedo ,hit the bottom of the bath next to my thigh , and rebounding sideways , lodged itself with unerring accuracy between the bath bottom and my scrotum .
you know those old cold war videos of the polaris missile shooting out of the water from a submerged submarine ?
well , cross that with a startled pheasant , and you have a good picture of my body leaving the bath ,making a robert shaped hole in the space time continuum .
there may have been nuclear fission due to the neighboring molecules trying desperately to get out of the way .
Unfortunately , i had temporarily forgotten the 3.5 ft high roll topped bath edge , which, as my exit foot slipped out from under me , and my bathward foot did the same , made high velocity contact with my orbs d'amour .
As an exit strategy , this left much to be desired .
luckily , since said items had just had a v hot to v cold experience , for a short period of time they were numb , and had no idea of the pain they were about to endure .
realising this , i rushed to think of a way to keep them as cold as possible .. i realised if i opened the bedroom window , and draped my replication components on the edge , they would be in -6 c , and the ensuing painfest may be ameliorated ..
... it was the work of a moment to get a stool and stand in the window doing my last chicken in the shop impression , and breathing deeply , trying to find a meditative state .
Now the site of a man naked , with his slice and dice draped over a freezing window ledge , in a big window of a 1865 georgian house may seem a strange one to many .
However , it obviously was not surprising to the large grey Goshawk , who up till now i had considered a friend .
maybe the cold made him do it , and i'm sure his therapist would support that justification , however , suddenly finding 24 lbs of war bird swooping in and latching onto my pontoon of passion , was definitely not what i was expecting .
Picture this, big bird of prey trying to take off , feet clamped round the frozen love lolly , me grabbing his wing with one hand and my replication components with the other , and us both yelling/screaming/squawking at full voice , when , all of a sudden ..
the hot post girl turns up in the drive .
She literally fell out of the red post van , and lay there laughing so much she nearly threw up .
well
really.
so i write this from my cell in the local polices station , with about 3 yards of bandage wrapped round my very very sore pinkle , and hoping the indecency charges will be dropped ....and the stretching will stay .
regards robert .

I can't tell if this is true or a masterpiece of fiction...
Either way, I've read it several times and it's incredible!

sounds like a x rated mr bean video, (your mini is cooler though!)
For the multifoil there are loads of types, the best stuff is good enough to insulate a loft so equivalent to around 100mm of rigid or 200mm of rockwool, you need to compare the U or R values of whatever you are looking at.

You should write a novel based on this! It will be a bestseller and you can afford a state of the art environmental friendly and cosy heating system with ease! Thom
