Had a Metro GTI on here for a while but that has sadly been moved on to a nice RR guy, and replaced with a car my wife will actually let me take the kids in! I might actually drive the toy car for once. Found locally to me after stalking for a few months, priced very keenly as he wanted a quick sale for personal reasons. It's been really well taken care of, given the right fluids etc. Lovely and smooth engine with a rebuilt Pierburg on the 1.8 carb engine. Gearbox is lovely and tight, that kind of old notchiness that is satisfying (no crunches etc). Paintwork looks presentable, polishes up beautifully. Got a few bits of laquer peel eg on the roof, paint is good underneath so won't be much of a job to tidy. Has some damage around the passenger door lock where someone has tried to break into it at some point. Happened on both my previous Mk2 Golfs so not unexpected. Bit of wear on driver bolster, cracked dash. Everything else works beautifully. No rust on the body that I've found, really in great condition (not used to that, with all these old BL things I seem to end up with), was the big reason I bought it on the spot. Originally the plan was to turn it into an occasional track day car, keep more of the interior in than I've done before, but put a half cage, engine swap etc. But it's just such a nice base so I've abandoned the track car plan. Instead the new plan is: - adding Stance+ coilovers all round (good reviews, low cost, quality seems nice) - nothing extreme maybe 50mm drop - front lower strut brace - tidy up the paintwork, fix a few other bits here and there - better brakes - different wheels - add a bit more of a soundsystem (has a cool Blaupunkt retro looking stereo and new speakers, just needs a small sub/amp hidden away) - New exhaust system, Jetex maybe Will run it until the carb gives up, then think about engines next. It pulls beautifully and recently had all belts/fluids done so it's too nice to swap out quite yet. Really pleased with it and I'm already driving it a lot more than the Metro, for daily chores etc. A few pics (sorry they're not great!).

Good to see a 53B on here. I have an 88 GTX, a rather rotten 84 Storm and used to own a German market LHD genuine 88' 16v which had the luxury of power steering and air con! That was sold to a German collector.
Although carb 1.8 is only 90bhp these have good low-mid range torque. Check the fuel filler pipe for corrosion behind the wing liner as well. Be interested in how you get on with those coilovers. i tried a different make on my 16v and hated them, too crashy, so went with sports springs which as the 16v has lower suspension than 8v as standard gave it a really nice stance and kept decent ride.

Having hoarded a GTII in Royal Blue in my garage for too long before it went to a member of this parish (whose since gone quiet) I applaud your choice.
I can tell you it has the chrome trim rings on the wheels as trying to find the proper VAG silver plastic ones is a bit of a chore... (They sometimes pop up in Estonia on ebay, think they were only used on some random spec late MK2 Golf's, GT2's and Vento's...)
The old way of releasing some ponies from the carb'd 1.8 was using the cam from the MK1 GTI.

Oh my!! I love me a Scirocco! Had a black Scala years ago and loved it! Everywhere I went I had people talk to me about it! Watch for water getting in around the windshield and into the fusebox, happened to me and meant the screen coming out for a bit of welding and a new seal. Would love another one!

Cheers for the tip, will check the filler pipe. Know very little about these guys cars, great to see other owners on here that I can milk for tips! Hoping to get the coilovers on over the next couple of weeks, will report back. Expecting firmer but just about acceptable based on reviews but let's see... Cheers!

Cheers, yeah I'm not a huge fan of the chrome surrounds (and you're right they're new-ish from the previous owner), a wheel change is incoming. Being pretty indecisive though. Like the idea of tuning the engine that's in there but not sure how tunable they are (from what you're saying, not hugely?). Engine swap may be the better move. Hopefully it'll run for a while though, it's a novelty having a functioning project for once.

Lovely looking machine right there, great wheel choice and that colour looks good. I keep looking at it and getting dellorean vibes. Maybe that's just me. Will check the windscreen for leaks. Appreciate all these tips! Determined to stay on top of rot.

First thing, I put 92 in the title but it's 91. Attempted the coilovers on a Sunday afternoon with a friend who has done it before on his citi golf. Literally got stopping my our tracks by the second bolt on the rear shock, classic. Lots of wd40 and the nut came off, they've definitely never been changed and it showed. Would the bolt come out? Would it b******ks. Bit of Internet searching confirmed that it has rusted itself into the bush sleeve. So we did the honorable thing and gave up immediately, put the rear back together and started on the front. This went much better, mostly. Before pic of height. Undid the top bolt first, with some funky tools my friend had to get the top nut loose. Then the lower bolt, couple of nuts in the strut and out it comes! What a great car to work on! To think I almost bought a 2000s alfa... Set up the coilover, I bought new top mounts too cos thd current ones looked old, plus no need to compress the springs which was a big time saver. Back together and wheel on and of course I set the setting the wrong way so we're at full 80mm slam mode. I like it, but couldn't turn the wheel lol. This is on 13s with 60 tyres We set the other side to about 50mm drop and fitted no drama, much better Ran out of time so its running gasser style, took it for a drive and its honestly totally acceptable for the road. Bit firmer but not crashing, nice damping generally. The new top mounts probably helped lots, suspect the old ones were shot. I've never driven a good one so I've no idea how it should feel, but I can live with these for sure and I live in a bumpy road area. Looks good I reckon! Once the rear is done I'll be test fitting a set of deep dish 15s and see how fitment is, might be able to squeeze another 10mm drop and still get over speed bumps. We shall see. Next job is cut off those irritating rear shocks!
