Well, it’s been a while since I’ve posted about my yellow 911, but that’s because, other then the odd little thing, the 3.2 has been well behaved. A little too well behaved, that I was left looking for something to do. Prices of longhood 911s have been beyond my reach for so long, when I heard of a mostly rot free 912 is So Cal for sale, I had to find out more. Before I knew it, I had given the yellow car away for a mere $35k that would cover the price of the 912 and shipping, quick, before anyone else found out about it. …and with testicles firmly in hand, put the money in a wire for this… (At this point I had seen half a dozen pics and a brief set of texts back and forth.) Then this week, once the wire had cleared, I called a shipper and they picked it up yesterday… No idea what I’m going to do with it, but it’s a great start for a fun project, to keep me from being under the feet, of ‘er indoors. It’s a 1968 SWB 912 (4 cylinder 911 - I bet explaining that wears thin quick) with a non numbers matching engine (ha ha ha) that has been bored out to 1700cc. The floors have already had work and will probably need more. The inside dash is a mess. It was originally Ossi blue, but is now Gulf blue and for some unknown reason, it has a carbon fiber bonnet. An injury from the early ‘00s I guess. It’s never going to be a concours car - which to me is just approval to have fun with it. My new Nein11.

Clever word-play! For those who don't know: Nein is the german word for No. And since it's not a real 11 ... I like that early blue one, the younger yellow one not that much btw.

Shouldn't that be a "kein elfer"? Ha ha ha. Yes, you’re probably right. Kind of corrected… Not sure that will fit on a Minnesota number plate though! I am hoping that Nein 11 is allowed!

Like a few builds on here I will have to hold back on posting replies every time you post pics or updates.
Not a lot of Porches I would consider having, but this one is scrambling my man buying hormones

Like a few builds on here I will have to hold back on posting replies every time you post pics or updates. Not a lot of Porches I would consider having, but this one is scrambling my man buying hormones Thanks! I’ve wanted a running long hood, ever since I realized that a 356 is always going to be ‘just’ out of my financial reach (now about a million miles out of my financial reach) so this is a great compromise. The yellow car was supposed to fit the bill, but while was fun to drive and very reliable, wasn’t really very quick and didn’t hit it from a looks standpoint. The wheels were wide enough to make it really stable at most legal speeds, so wasn’t that much fun to drive either. I kept catching glimpses of the car it used to be, under the impact bumper and whale-tail and for a few seconds, gave me the vibe but the faded as my eye moved. And it was way too nice to backdate. The blue 912 has had some interesting history. It was someone’s Autocross car for a few years, but has since had the cage pulled out of it and returned to street. It was also going to be in a TV show, but after early filming, it never made it to the editing room. I’ve been promised a couple of snaps that I’ll share once they arrive. Most recently, it has been owned by a So Cal fireman. He is the one that added the roof rack, so he could use the car to move his equipment to and from work.

The 4 pot being lighter meant the 921 was less susceptible to the rear engine pendulum effect the 911 6cylinder cars of this era were renowned for apparently.
They did one of these in 2.0 Einspritz form on Wheeler Dealers, slightly later model year though.

Back in the days (last century) it was quite common for beetle drivers to pump up type 4 flat-fours (VW 411/412, but also busses and porsche 914) up to 3 litres, which could easily cope with the flat sixes of their posh cousins.

Yeah, Jake Raby is the guy for hot Type 4 motors and they look amazing, but blimey....the prices....same as the car cost. A French guy I know ended up putting a hot type 1 VW motor in his 912, simply because it was so much cheaper to make decent power that way.

Currently driving a '68 Karmann Ghia as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

You´re absolutely right, it was never cheap to have a really beefy beetle. Five digit sum, and not at the lower edge! That´s why watercooled engines became popular - ford v6, vag 4-in-line, subaru flat-fours,... A stock gti engine was a cheaper solution than any tuning steps. Maybe a subaru boxer would help here, too?
