Hello! First thoughts were KIA? UGHhh... But as I continued reading I thought "Hey, it's cheap, funny and useful so why not?" Now that I see the donuts in the field and the "we just do not care" attitude, the KIA is great. Did I just say that out loud? shhh On to the vision and the creativity part of your build- FANfreakinTASTIC. Moving the engine, changing the suspension- HOT DANG IT that's a cool thing 'ya got there! Really great work so far and I hope it makes you all laugh a lot. Enjoy the process because the finished project is only part of it. It's all fun and this is a big 'ole box of WIN. I swear if I buy a rusty kia 4x4 it's all your fault. Carry on then! Really appreciate the words of encouragement! I think there is a fine line between bravery and stupidity and I always seem to be on the wrong side of said line hahaha!

It's great to see so many people getting on board with this! It's only a small post tonight sorry!
Having made a basic frame to join body to chassis the next step was to start to plan out the grille and bonnet mounting. Using the 25 x 25 x 2mm box I made a series of slits to curve it so it would match a plywood template I'd cut out to match the inside of the grille shell. I've not finished welding it as I want to make everything fit then do final welding and finishing later on. Frame made I then made some 20 x 20 x 2mm box uprights and welded those to the chassis. The beauty of that is the larger box slides over the smaller box giving me locating pins for this frame as well as a way to remove it for access to the front of the engine. Bonnet just rested on for the visual. It will need some tweaks and I'll probably find when we have a radiator it's completely wrong but hey that's what it's all about right? Right?!

Loving this! What are you doing with the wiring/electronics, modding the KIA stuff or new ecu etc? The plan is use the existing stuff for the engine side of things and thin out anything we don't need, for lights etc. we plan to make up our own loom.

I'm really enjoying this. Very different with some great fabrication thrown in. I don't have the imagination or skill to build something like this, so kudos to you for having both!

Probably me missing something, why will this need biva? Keeping chassis,engine ,trans axles, suspension and steering, so shouldn't it be just a rebody? Ttfn Glenn

Yes if you look at the early photos the front crossmember and body mounts have been removed, I can see why they wouldn't suit the style of vehicle. My reading of the rules is that moving the engine would not affect the BIVA requirement as long as you don't cut the chassis to do it.

Interesting, I had assumed removing engine mounts would amount to cutting the frame. Nice that the rules are as clear as mud.

It doesn't get you out of an IVA test . . .

My understanding is that in the eyes of DVLA, if it has the original reg number, it is the original vehicle. If it's the original vehicle, it's registered and therefore doesn't need an IVA. If it loses the identity, it's a new vehicle in the eyes of DVLA, and needs an IVA to be registered. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing this one progress

Pass IVA, and the 8 points let you keep the original registration and not get a "Q" plate - although it may then be noted as "non-transferable" so if you want a particular plate on it, do it now. IVA manual is a free download, so worth giving a good coat of looking at and even ringing local test center or emailing them - always found them very helpful for the three cars I've put through. Building with the intention to pass the test is a lot easier than having to make changes to - and also means you aren't flagged up as trouble from the first attempt

No need to get a Q plate - you will be able to get a 'new' plate of the same year as the Kia. You have proof of using at least 2 main components of the original vehicle (engine & box) and as you are using the chassis/suspension/steering its a slam dunk to get a transferrable same year of doner reg. As for needing IVA - yes as he's modified ther chassis - unmodified it would be classed as a rebody. Once passed IVA it will have the full 14 points again. Bookmarked

This particular example won't pass the 8-point check however, and therefore will require an IVA. As BPR says, however, it can be allocated an age-related plate relevant to the donor vehicle instead of a non-age Q-plate.
