2005 Kia Sorento into a 1932 Ford Hot Rod

The plan is use the existing stuff for the engine side of things and thin out anything we don't need, for lights etc. we plan to make up our own loom. 

I see they can be remapped to 200 bhp & 470 nm, could be a very swift little thing

If this was mine I probably would, but my brother is going from 60hp Up! to 150hp Hot Rod is probably enough of a jump hahaha

Continuing on, with the grille shell mounted up we needed some metal inside to mount steering and pedals to as well as give the shell a bit of strength. Some hefty box (can't remember size right now) was bent using a pipe bender to match the dash contour and body contours then some of the 25mm stuff was used to made the front section. This all bolts in and bolts to the frame welded to the chassis that the body sits onto. Making the frame also then means when we come to fit doors we have a sturdy structure for the hinges and so on. 

The corners on the front section of frame need to be tidied as I welded some neat corner pieces on only to find they fouled on the fibreglass (curse word it!) so will be neatened up when everything comes apart for coats of paint. 














Now that all that was made we could mount the first part of the steering column to work out where to cut a hole in the bulkhead. The column is going to need extending because for some reason re-arranging the layout of a car makes everything not fit anymore... We then made up some supports for the grille so we can use them for mounting stuff and see what parts are going to be poking out the bonnet sides. The plan is to have some power bulges but keep it fairly sedate, a little hint of steampunk but not over doing it and making it look or forced or like that's the theme we want. If we need to run pipes externally we make it a feature but only if that's a necessity not to make it showy and unnecessarily complicated.

Shortened chassis I suspect.

Yes if you look at the early photos the front crossmember and body mounts have been removed, I can see why they wouldn't suit the style of vehicle.

My reading of the rules is that moving the engine would not affect the BIVA requirement as long as you don't cut the chassis to do it.

My reading of it is that 8 points, of which 5 must come from "un-modified" chassis, allows you to keep the original registration number.

It doesn't get you out of an IVA test . . .

It'll come under "radically altered" vehicle - its certainly not the original vehicle, a Kia Sorento, so you need the details changing to be able to insure it and be legal if anything happens out on the road.  MOT man, if he is being correct, would have to report it too.

Pass IVA, and the 8 points let you keep the original registration and not get a "Q" plate - although it may then be noted as "non-transferable" so if you want a particular plate on it, do it now.

IVA manual is a free download, so worth giving a good coat of looking at and even ringing local test center or emailing them - always found them very helpful for the three cars I've put through.

Building with the intention to pass the test is a lot easier than having to make changes to - and also means you aren't flagged up as trouble from the first attempt
