I bought this off the bay the other day. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4509386494&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:ITits going to go in my mates shed in Northumberland for a while then after Xmas, if it is as sound as the guy says it is on the phone, I hope to bring it here and start work on bringing it back to life. I will do this by installing the glorious 2.7 Honda 24v V6 engine from my crusty but willing Rover 800 Vitesse + Ford type-9 5 speed box. I don't think (although i would like to be corrected by an expert) that this conversion has been done before but the more I investigate it the keener I am, although it is a canny old proj and defo not a PPC 'weekend swap'.

What sort of power has one of those Honda engines got? Not as much as the V8 surely?

The Honda is supposed to be 177bhp. The carb-flavour Rover V8 is about 150. The injected Rover v8 is about 180. A twin-plenum vitesse is alleged to just scrape 200. So, theres not much in it.
The standard transverse-installation 827 exhaust is very rudimentary, i imagine some thought applied to this area during a RWD installation should libetate a few extra BHP an' all.

Great engine swap idea. The V8 is not always the answer (I can't believe I said that!)

However, the Rover V8 produces loads of torque, rather than out-and-out power, hence the seemingly low bhp figures. To me, the issue would be the torque curve of the Honda engine - how does the weight of the SD1 and your old 827 compare? Also, how about the gearing and the weight of the engine itself? The Rover V8 is quite light (IIRC, same as a 1.8 B Series) so you may need to reset the front suspension height to suit. Anyway, congratulations & best of luck with the project!

Sounds like a great project!! I wouldn't have thought the Honda motor would take much to get it up to 180-190 territory? Whilst the Rover V8 is light, I would think the V6 would be lighter still. Any thoughts on how you're gonna mate up the Type 9? Do you have the 'box yet? If not, have you considered the MT75 from a Granny... may be more suited to the type of engine? Dunno... just thinking aloud really... Keep us posted mate! ;D

The Rover V8 produces around 200lb-ft in carb form whereas my honda lump is about 170. So a bit of a deficit there. But its a very flat torque curve, I drive the 827 like a real grandad sticking it in top once it is moving!
Also the honda engine is defo not a looker! it is a right old tube-and wire fest.
But it is all aluminium, beautifully smooth, capable of massive mileage and i get 35mpg out of the 827 on a run. And, coming from the 827 i am 'keeping it in the family' so to speak.
The Type 9 will be at its limit i reckon attached to the honda V6. It might well chuck its guts up sooner or later. But the bellhousing is detachable so from a conversion point of view I may be able to fettle the honda bellhousing to attach to it, whereas the MT75 is integral with the box.
Failing that i am sure i have a Triumph TR7 LT77 box somewhere which might be stronger (used with rover V8 I believe) but I think the gear lever would be in the wrong place.

Also the honda engine is defo not a looker! it is a right old tube-and wire fest. I know what you mean! ;D The Type 9 makes sense too with the detatchable bellhousing - I forgot the MT75 was integral... What about the original Rover V8 or 2600 gearbox? would that not make hooking the rear axle up a bit easier? Saying that if you have a Type 9 then you might as well use it! I did wonder if it would stand up to the power... The heavy duty one that was hooked up to the Cologne V6 should handle it OK... it's a shame this wasn't a few months ago as I had two sitting in my garden!
